Q&A: Ducks First Round Pick Shea Theodore
Theodore is among a group of players participating in the Ducks conditioning camp held at THE RINKS - Anaheim ICE. After a recent on-ice session, the young defenseman shared his thoughts with AnaheimDucks.com.

What are your impressions on the city of Anaheim?
It’s beautiful. Coming from a rainy city like Vancouver, it’s always nice to drive down and always see palm trees and the sun out. It’s nice for the first few days I’ve been here.

Is this the first time you’ve been to Orange County?
I came when I was about eight or nine [years old] when I came to Disneyland, but that was a while ago.

What are your impressions of conditioning camp so far?
I felt pretty good for not skating for the past month and a half. It was good to get back on the ice and get a feel for it.

What are you most looking forward to during your time here?
Just getting to know some of the guys, and really getting to know the organization. I’ve heard nothing but good things, so I’m ready to feel it.

Take us back to your draft day. What was going through your mind when you heard your name called by Anaheim?
It was pretty special. I got goose bumps. It was nice to see my family happy for me like they always are. And be rewarded. Now I just need to get to work.

Is it safe to say your family members are now Anaheim Ducks fans?
Yeah, definitely!

What are your impressions of the Anaheim Ducks organization?
Nothing but the best since I’ve been here. Whatever I’ve needed and asked for, they’ve helped me out. They’re all nice guys, great coaches. I’ve gotten a lot of help. Nothing but good things.

What are your goals moving forward?
Just get bigger, stronger, and get some experience from the conditioning camp and just learn as much as I can.

What would it mean to you to be mentored by a guy like Scott Niedermayer?
Pretty special. He’s one of the best defensemen to ever play in the NHL. I know he’s got a few tricks up his sleeve, so hopefully I can learn a little bit from him and talk to him.

What style of game do you play? What can Ducks fans expect from you in the future?
I bring an offensive-style game. I like to move the puck, I like to skate it. I like to run the power play.

More on Theodore:
Theodore, 17 (8/3/95), scored 19-31=50 points with 32 penalty minutes (PIM) in 71 games with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL) last season. Theodore ranked eighth among all WHL defensemen in scoring, and second among team leaders in assists and third in points. The 6-2, 178-pound blueliner has appeared in 144 career WHL games with Seattle, collecting 23-62=85 points with 64 PIM. He also played seven WHL Playoff games this spring, earning 0-2=2 points with a +1 rating and four PIM.

A native of Aldergrove, British Columbia, Theodore won gold with Team Canada at the 2012 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament and registered five assists (0-5=5) en route to gold at the 2013 Under-18 World Championship. He also won a gold medal with Team British Columbia at the 2011 Canada Winter Games.

Shea is a great skater and can really move the puck. The way the game is played now, that is really important. You need players like that. We are really excited.” -- Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray

"We love his offensive hockey sense, we love the way he is so poised under pressure with the puck and we love the way he is able to generate offense from the blue line. We were very pleased with that selection. You look at his performance playing for Team Canada in the summer and at the end of the year. He played first power play and first penalty kill for them in both tournaments. In Seattle, they were very challenged and didn’t have a very good year with their goaltender. That affected the plus/minus for him and the whole team. He was on an island, so to speak, and I don’t think it will be an issue going forward." -- Ducks Director of Amateur Scouting Martin Madden
