Ducks Sign Koivu to One-Year Contract Extension
The Ducks have signed center Saku Koivu to a one-year contract extension through the 2013-14 NHL season. Per club policy, no financial terms of the deal were disclosed.

Koivu, 38 (11/23/74), recently completed in his fourth season with Anaheim in 2012-13, compiling 8-19=27 points with a +4 rating and 18 penalty minutes (PIM) in 47 contests. The 5-10, 182-pound center ranked fourth on the club in points and tied for third in assists. In addition, he led Anaheim in faceoff wins (437) and faceoffs taken (851) with a 51.4% success rate throughout the season. Koivu scored his 800th career NHL point on Apr. 3, 2013 vs. Dallas. He also added 1-2=3 points in Anaheim’s seven-game Western Conference Quarterfinal series vs. Detroit.

“We are happy to bring back a character player like Saku,” said Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “At this stage in his career, his first priority is to win, and we are happy he’s decided this is the place for him.”

A native of Turku, Finland, Koivu is a veteran of 17 NHL seasons, 13 of which were played with the Montreal Canadiens (served as captain for 10 of the 13). In 1,058 career NHL games with Anaheim and Montreal, he has scored 244-559=803 points with a +7 rating and 763 PIM. Koivu originally signed with Anaheim on July 8, 2009. He has appeared in 267 career games as a Duck, earning 53-109=162 points with a +17 rating and 140 PIM. Koivu is a two-time All-Star, having appeared in both the 1998 and 2003 All-Star Games. He has also played in the Stanley Cup Playoffs on 10 occasions (eight times with Montreal, two with Anaheim), earning 18-40=58 points in 67 contests.

Selected by Montreal in the first round (21st overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft, Koivu won the Bill Masterton Trophy following the 2001-02 season, presented annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. Koivu has also been honored with the 2007 King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his work with the Saku Koivu Foundation, formed in 2002 to help raise funds for cancer-fighting equipment. The King Clancy Trophy is awarded annually to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community.
