Q&A: Beleskey Talks About Re-Signing with the Ducks
"I’m really excited. Being back with the Ducks for another two years was exactly what I wanted to do, and I’m just looking forward to being in Anaheim for the next few years."

The uncertainty of free agency can be daunting for a player, but Matt Beleskey couldn't have asked for a better outcome this time around.

Today the 25-year-old Beleskey signed a two-year contract that will keep him a part of the Ducks organization through the 2014-15 season. It's a great arrangement for both Beleskey and the Ducks, who benefited from the 6-0, 206-pounder's physical play last season (a team-leading 103 hits) and some timely scoring (eight goals).

From his offseason home in Barrie, Ontario, Beleskey talked about how pleased he is to sign the new deal.

Q: How are you feeling right about now?
Beleskey: I’m really excited. Being back with the Ducks for another two years was exactly what I wanted to do, and I’m just looking forward to being in Anaheim for the next few years. I didn’t really want to go anywhere else, and it worked out the best way possible.

You’ve grown up in the Ducks organization. What is it you like about being here?
Obviously we have a great group of guys. Signing Pears and Getz for eight years just showed where the organization is going. You’ve got a bunch of young guys coming up who are exciting to watch. I thought we had a really good year last year, even though we didn’t finish off the way that we wanted to. Plus, living in SoCal isn’t too bad at all, that’s for sure. Living in Newport Beach and playing hockey is something not too many people get to do.

You mentioned last season didn’t end the way everyone had hoped, but do you remain optimistic about the makeup of this team?

Definitely. Starting from our goalies all the way to our top centerman in Getzy, it’s a good group of guys who work hard. We know what’s possible from last season, and that’s something we can definitely build on. I’m really looking forward to next season.

Are there areas you want to develop for next season and beyond?

Last season I started to find the scoring touch again, and I want to keep contributing that way. I want keep my physical play up and just keep being a more consistent player for our team, to be put in those big situations more often.

What was your reaction to hearing about the Bobby Ryan trade with Ottawa on Saturday?
It’s really tough to see a guy go, and I’ve played with Bobby since my first year pro in Iowa. It’s been awhile with me and him, and our girlfriends are really good friends, so it’s tough. It’s always tough when someone gets traded. But it’s a big opportunity for him going to Ottawa, where he’s going to be a top guy, and I wish him all the best.

What have you done with your summer so far?
I stayed in Orange County for a month after the season, and did a little bit of surfing. My girlfriend [Victoria] and I went to Jamaica for a week. Now we’re back here in Barrie, and doing a little home renovating. We’re just trying to relax a bit. The summer is flying by. I have a few weddings to go to here before I go back. I’ll be back in early September and try to get moved in and ready to go.

How’s the dog?
Karl is doing great. He’s laying right here on the bed.

What kind of training are you doing?
I just started getting back on the ice two days a week, and I’m doing four days a week in the gym. I do some mountain biking and road bike training when I’m not in the gym. It’s pretty much go time now. It feels like the summer is almost winding down.
