Fans came out in droves for the 16th annual Fedorin Cup held Saturday, Aug. 24 at THE RINKS – Anaheim ICE presented by Honda. The charity hockey game, and VIP Casino Night dinner that followed, benefitted the Athletic Sports Fund of America (ASFA) as well as the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer initiative.

Among the game’s participants were current and former Ducks, including defensemen Bryan Allen, Hampus Lindholm and Luca Sbisa, forward Emerson Etem, 2007 Stanley Cup champion Todd Marchant, Craig Johnson and Jeff Friesen. Also on the ice was Ducks legend Teemu Selanne, who served as captain for Team USA. Former Duck Sean Pronger wore the C for Canada.

“For the past 16 years, dedicated volunteers, sponsors, players and fans come together for one night to fight cancer through hockey,” said Rick Hutchinson, Director of Hockey for THE RINKS, and President of the Athletic Sports Fund of America. “I'm always touched by the response from fans, pro players, the community, and the emails I receive about the Fedorin Cup and how it means different things to different people.”

After player introductions and a ceremonial puck drop, the two teams squared off in what would become a high-scoring and highly competitive affair. Both teams combined to score 26 goals, including 13 in the second period alone. Canada’s Kyle Calder got his team on the board first, just 2:15 into the opening frame.

Down three goals in the late stages of regulation, Team USA mounted a furious comeback to tie the game 13-all in a span of 5:35 on goals from former Ducks prospect Jake Newton, Selanne and John Blue.

Selanne gets goaltender Adam Lawrence moving laterally during the shootout.

A best-of-five shootout followed regulation, and it was Selanne who had a chance to win it for Team USA. With the crowd buzzing in anticipation, Selanne rushed in on Canada goaltender Adam Lawrence. After crossing the blueline with speed, Selanne abruptly stopped on a dime just outside the crease, freezing Lawrence. With the netminder out of position, Selanne simply pushed the puck across the goal line before giving Lawrence a light-hearted stick tap to his pads.

In fitting fashion, it was Selanne who gave Team USA a 14-13 shootout victory.

The game featured three hat tricks, scored by Calder and Craig Lyons for Canada and Blue for Team USA. Newton had a four-point night, while Ducks phenom and Long Beach native Etem tallied two goals. Selanne finished with a game-high five points (two goals, three assists).

More about the ASFA
The Athletic Sports Fund of America (ASFA) is a non-profit organization which conducts charitable programs and events in the Orange County area to support the fight against cancer and young athletes in need.

ASFA was established in 1998 when Eric Fedorin, a local California hockey player was diagnosed with brain cancer. In honor of his memory, the Athletic Sports Fund of America has continued to raise funds through charity hockey games, casino nights, golf tournaments, and both silent and live auctions.

Through the generous support of our sponsors and event guests alike, ASFA has been able to raise thousands of dollars to help support noteworthy organizations such as the American Cancer Society, the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer, the USC Norris Cancer center, and to aid young athletes in need.
