Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League to Double in Size for 2013-14 Season
The Ducks today announced that the club’s Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League (ADHSHL) will double in size for the upcoming 2013-14 season. A total of 28 teams from 19 California schools (450+ student-athletes) will compete in the league this year, up from last year’s 14 teams from 12 schools. The ADHSHL has expanded its reach from Orange, Riverside and Los Angeles Counties to also include two schools from San Diego County, as well as Bellarmine College Preparatory from San Jose, CA.

“The Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League has flourished beyond our expectations, being only five years old,” said Vice President – THE RINKS Art Trottier. “Having our league grow so quickly to 28 teams, including a defending national champion, is very exciting for the organization.”

In addition to Bellarmine College Prep, the ADHSHL roster now includes San Diego Unified (student-athletes participating from the entire district), Villa Park High School, Woodbridge High School (Irvine) and Capistrano Unified (student-athletes participating from entire district). The 2011-12 season saw the inclusion of a united team from Bishop Amat and Upland Christian Schools, but increased participation from both schools has necessitated separate squads and each will compete individually in 2013-14. The ADHSHL is divided into three divisions: Varsity 1A, Varsity 2A and Junior Varsity. Bellarmine College Prep joins 2013 USA Hockey Varsity High School national champion Santa Margarita Catholic, as well as JSerra Catholic, Servite and Orange Lutheran in the Varsity 1A division.

The ADHSHL’s 2013-14 season will feature an All-Star Game for each division in January, as well as playoffs for each of the three divisions in March. While most regular season contests for the ADHSHL take place at THE RINKS – Anaheim ICE, Honda Center will serve as host to the All-Star Games and playoff contests. Besting JSerra Catholic High in the Varsity 1A championship game on Mar. 6, Santa Margarita Catholic High went on to win the USA Hockey Varsity High School championship on Mar. 24, defeating Regis Jesuit (Colorado) in a 4-3 overtime thriller. Corona del Mar High won the Varsity 2A division title (over Edison), while JSerra defeated Los Alamitos for the Junior Varsity division title.

The Ducks launched the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League on July 1, 2008 with JSerra Catholic High School (San Juan Capistrano) as its charter member. Santa Margarita Catholic High (Santa Margarita) was added in 2009 and joined by Servite High (Anaheim), Damien High (La Verne) and Lutheran High School of Orange County (Orange) in 2010-11. The ADHSHL swelled to 11 teams in 2011-12 with the inclusion of Bishop Amat/Upland Christian Academy, Edison High School (Huntington Beach) and Long Beach Prep. The 2012-13 season saw Corona del Mar, Corona-Norco, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos join the league. As the league continues to grow, the Anaheim Ducks will continue to provide financial support for each team involved in the program.
