On the loss

It was kind of a tough game, a weird game for our group. We came out early and scored a power play goal, and it was almost like we let up after that. They kind of took it to us a little bit. We were able to rebound, but you get against a hot goaltender like that and you don’t get back.

We threw a lot over the net tonight for some reason. We were being a little too fine with the puck tonight maybe. You’re going to have nights like that. It’s unfortunate the streak had to end like that.

There are a lot of distractions going on this week with the outdoor game. Everyone wants to talk about it, and they have been talking about it for the last two weeks. It’s hard to focus in on what you need to do and on the points at end. That’s an excuse, and it’s nothing that our group hasn’t been a part of before or will be part of again. When there are distractions, we’ve got to learn to play through them.

On his outing

I didn’t feel like I was really in the game. It wasn’t a really good effort on my part, and it’s too bad we couldn’t turn it around. I just wasn’t able to cut out all the distractions, but those things happen. It’s too bad it happened in that situation. I really wanted to keep that streak going.

There are some days you feel better and some where you don’t feel that good. The only problem is that as a goalie, you find out right away if you don’t feel that good, and you can’t really hide. Those things happen, and I’m not too worried about it. I feel bad and disappointed. You can’t be perfect every night.

On the game

They [Winnipeg] played really good as a team. You knew they were going to be resilient. When they scored right after we scored, I think we had outplayed them right up to that point. We talked about that if we could get the lead after the first period, we could probably hold it, but if they had the lead, it was going to be a fight. They had the 2-1 lead going into the second, and that probably gained them a lot of confidence.

Those first two lines can really skate. Their goalie made a lot of great saves. What are you going to do?

It gets tougher as the season goes on, which is why every team has got to improve to be as good as they want to be in April.

WINNIPEG JETS

On the game

I kind of expected that. Every time you come to this building it’s a tough building to play in. It feels good to beat them and be the first team this season. They’re great. We battled hard. The penalty kill was key. They have some good guys in their lineup and I think we handled it pretty well. They spent some time on our end and they are really strong on the puck, especially in the corner. We handled it pretty well.

On the team's confidence
Old teams play with confidence. The new coach let us know that we are good players and we can beat everybody. He gave us confidence. We know we can beat anybody but we have a lot of work ahead of us.

On the win

It is good stuff for us. We knew it was going to be a tough challenge coming into this building, trying to get a win. No other team has done it. It is good stuff for us and it is going to be even tougher in San Jose. That is our mindset.

On his shorthanded goal
I got a pass out of the zone on the penalty kill. Had some time and space and I thought I’d shoot it and it went in.

On the game

They are a very, very good team. They expose all of your weaknesses. I don’t mean ours but any team. There were parts of the game, and a lot of it was played in our end, where we were right. Willingness was there, all the character stuff, 36 blocked shots, big penalty kill at the end, holding a lead when it goes from 3-1 to 3-2. Yes, our goaltender was a big part of that.

On the last 10 minutes
That is the loudest the bench got all night. I found it really quiet early. We weren’t clearly good at the start of the game. We talked about quickness, and that quickness never got to the level consistently, but it was there at pieces. We got faster. We had probably our best offensive opportunities in the third, so that’s a positive. The bench got loud when they made it 3-2. They started really talking. That’s a good sign. It usually goes the other way. Lots of chatter, lots of excitement. The penalty kill in the third was huge.
