Hiller Talks About his Stadium Series Game Mask
|Hiller tried out the mask and new pads in practice today.
Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller, in addition to being a stalwart in net for seven seasons in Anaheim, has become known for the distinctive masks he’s donned between the pipes. From the fan-favorite, flat black “Darth Hiller” mask he wore during the 2010-11 season to the Mighty Ducks-themed one he wore for Throwback Night last November, Hiller has frequently made a fashion statement with his headgear.
As expected, Hiller has unveiled a special mask for the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series game against the Kings on Saturday at Dodger Stadium. Like Hiller’s other masks, this one was designed by Alec Voggel of Airxess studio in Switzerland.
While not an overly complicated design, it’s a nod to the orange jerseys the Ducks will don for the game, and he’s got the orange pads to go with it.
Hiller wore both in today’s practice at Honda Center, then talked about the mask afterwards:
This season is a little special, because normally you have one or two masks a year at most. But this season we have the Mighty Ducks [Throwback Night] game, the Stadium Series game and then the Olympics [Hiller will again represent the Swiss team]. So, I’ve had to come up with quite a few designs. I know my painter was backed up there for awhile, but I told him I definitely wanted to do something for the outdoor game.
|"It’s like a real smooth finish, and it looks pretty cool. I think it would be a little too flashy for the whole year long, but I think for that occasion it’s perfect."|
I sent him a link to the site when they released the jerseys and everything. He did some thinking, and he emailed me a rendering of what he thought would be cool. I liked it a lot, and it was almost exactly what we ended up with.
There isn’t too much on the mask. Sometimes guys put so much on a mask that you can’t really tell what it is. It definitely stands out, especially with the flat orange and the shiny Ducks logo. I think you can tell from quite far away what it looks like. It doesn’t have too many things on it, but I think it has everything you need, and I like it a lot.
It’s got some of my personal stuff on the back, the Stadium Series logo. I like that big Stadium Series imprint on the front.
He kind of came up on his own, but I’ve been asking for flat colors for awhile now. It’s kind of been a staple of my latest masks. I assume he thought that was the go-to, and I actually like it a lot. It’s a real smooth finish, and it looks pretty cool. I think it would be a little too flashy for the whole year long, but I think for that occasion it’s perfect.
It’s too bad they won’t let me keep it though. I think the Ducks want to keep it in their archives, to have something from the first Stadium Series game. I’ll try to sneak it away, but it’s probably not gonna happen.
