It was business as usual inside the confines of Honda Center on this rainy afternoon, as the Ducks prepare for tomorrow’s tilt against the Carolina Hurricanes.

The news of the day revolved around right wing Tim Jackman, who earlier signed a one-year contract extension through the 2014-15 season. Jackman says he couldn’t be happier signing on for another year with the NHL’s best team.

“It was an honor to get a phone call about wanting to get a deal done,” he said. “For an organization like this to say they want me back for another year, is something my family and I are really excited about.

“Ever since I got here, I’ve just really enjoyed it and have tried to fit in as best I could,” he said. “It starts at the top with our leaders like Getzy [Ryan Getzlaf], Perry, Teemu and Saku. These guys just lead and the rest of us try to jump on board and follow. It makes it a lot of fun.”

Since being acquired from the Calgary Flames in exchange for a sixth-round selection in the 2014 NHL Draft on Nov. 21, 2013, Jackman has appeared in 20 games for the Ducks, earning two points (1g/1a) and 48 penalty minutes.

His physical presence and skating ability has given head coach Bruce Boudreau the flexibility to mix and match forwards on any given night. Using last night as an example, Boudreau inserted Jackman into the lineup to face the Blues, a team known for its toughness and physical play. In fact, Jackman played in all three games against St. Louis, and all were Ducks victories.

“He’s a physical guy who can skate,” said Boudreau. “He brings something to the table. He brings an influence to our team where he works hard every day. I’m happy for Tim. He’s a good player.”

PERREAULT “DAY TO DAY”
Ducks center Mathieu Perreault suffered an upper-body injury during last night’s 1-0 victory over the Blues and did not return to the game. Perreault wasn’t on the ice this afternoon, and earlier today Boudreau gave an update on his status.

“He’s unlikely [for tomorrow], but with him it’s day to day,” said Boudreau. “I assume he’ll play Wednesday [Canadiens], but when you’re sore at this time of the year, we’ve got extra forwards so it gives someone else a chance.”

One of those players could be Jakob Silfverberg, who was a healthy scratch last night. Boudreau hinted that Silfverberg, who says he hasn’t played center since he was 17, might get a crack at that position.

“It looks like we might give it a shot tomorrow and see how that works out,” said Boudreau. “If it doesn’t, we can switch in a hurry.”

DESPERATION HOCKEY
Tomorrow, the Ducks will face a Hurricanes team on the outside looking in, currently sitting in 13th place in the Eastern Conference with 61 points (seven away from eighth-place Philadelphia). After today’s game at Los Angeles, the Hurricanes will only have 22 opportunities to punch a ticket to the postseason.

Defenseman Cam Fowler says the Ducks will have to be ready from the start, and avoid having a “letdown game” against an Eastern Conference foe.

“We have to be ready because they have a lot of skill over there,” he said. “They’re a team that works hard and relies on their scoring and goaltending. It’s going to be a good game. We’re looking to not have a letdown against this team. It’s going to be an important game for us.”
