On tonight’s game

A couple turnovers cost us some goals. We had our fair chances, but we just couldn’t capitalize on them. I thought we played a decent game. We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we had lots of chances offensively. We just have to make sure to bury those.

On struggling to score goals
We should’ve had more guys in front to make screens, tips, and get in the dirty areas. Right now we’re struggling to score goals because we’re not going to the front of the net and winning those battles and getting those tough goals. That’s what we need to work on and get back at it.

On the inconsistent power play

The last three games I thought we’ve done a great job. We’ve worked hard, gotten pucks back after shots, we’ve shots pucks. They’re just not going in. I’m not accepting that. Those are the things we have to focus on as a group. When the power play works, it’s because everybody is working and everybody is shooting. I thought our guys have done that the last three games. We need to support each other through those things.

On earning two points over the past three games
We’re competing right through the end of this thing. When it comes to those points, at least they were given up to the East teams and we weren’t giving up four-point nights. We got two points out of the three games, and we can use that a little bit. We were in all of the games. We played some good hockey teams.

When a goalie is sharp and you don’t create traffic in front of the net where he can’t see the pucks coming, you’re not going to score. He was seeing everything. He was stopping everything. You can only talk about so much, but if you want to score goals in this league, you have to go to the front of net and pay the price.

On the uncharacteristic number of turnovers
I was surprised because we went over everything. Everything they do, we went over. We still make the mistakes that we’ve been making lately.

I thought it was a great game. We blocked a lot of shots tonight and that made a big difference. A few times I gave up a few rebounds and guys were there with good sticks. They paid the price tonight. We had some good goals as well, at the right time.

On starting the road trip with a win
That was our main focus coming here. We know it’s a tough building. Tomorrow (in San Jose) and LA as well. They’re all tough buildings. We proved to ourselves that we can compete against any team in this league.

It was nice. They’re a great team. They’re great at home. We played hard tonight. It is nice to start off the road trip with a win. We know it is going to be a really tough trip so that is a big start for us.

The whole game was pretty hard. They’re a great team. Their home record speaks for itself. They’ve got a lot of fire power. Especially when Getzlaf and Perry are on the ice, you have to be aware at all times. They played well but it was nice for us to get the win.

A lot of things went our way early in the hockey game. I think the frustration set in on their part and then they started to get their game going. They’re not in the position they’re in because they are a bad hockey club. You know there was going to be pushback. They have a heck of a hockey team and we just found a way.

On the penalty kill
Your goaltender is always your best penalty killer. That doesn’t change no matter where you’re at. Bernier made some big stops and we were able to box out. There wasn’t a lot of second and third opportunities. When you have Corey Perry in front of the net, he is an aggravating type of player. He gets his stick on a lot of things. Getzlaf is a big, skilled guy. They’ve got a lot of weapons that they can throw at you and we blocked a lot of shots tonight.
