Ducks to Host 1,000 Fifth Graders for Physical Fitness Challenge at Honda Center this Monday, March 17

“Captain’s Challenge” Program Promotes Leadership and Healthy Lifestyle; Special Appearance by Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf to Serve as Reward for Participation in Monday’s “Fit Finals”

Thursday, 03.13.2014 / 5:50 PM / News
The Ducks will host the Fit Finals next Monday, Mar. 17 at Honda Center as part of its Captain’s Challenge program. Nearly 1,000 fifth grade students will participate in physical fitness activities in the parking lot in preparation for their upcoming State of California required physical fitness assessments. The fitness activities will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m., beginning with a special appearance by Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf.

The Captain’s Challenge is a new initiative of the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. Program (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation and Education). The motivational program serves to encourage fifth grade students to have healthy living habits as well as prepare for the upcoming California Physical Fitness Test. In advance of Monday’s Fit Finals, participating schools and students received a workbook containing a month-long program that emphasizes nutrition, health-related matters, physical fitness and leadership traits.

The Captain’s Challenge program and Fit Finals event this Monday are free to schools through the Anaheim Ducks Foundation. During Monday’s Fit Finals, students will run one mile, complete a trunk lift, do push-ups and sit-ups and test flexibility through a sit-and-reach assessment. During the month preceding the Captain’s Challenge Fit Finals, students had an opportunity to become the class captain, donning a “C” on his/her shoulder for a designated day to lead other students in fitness activities during recess or lunch. Anaheim Ducks staff volunteers and community partners University of La Verne and Cal State Fullerton will be on hand Monday to record student scores and create an energetic atmosphere for the Fit Finals. Getzlaf will appear during the opening ceremony and lead the first activity, acknowledging the month-long effort of the students and encouraging them to continue exercising captain-like qualities. Afterwards, a celebration expo consisting of Microsoft, American Heart Association, Dairy Council of California, Anaheim YMCA, The-Rinks, Orange County Department of Education, and Whole Foods will be made available to participants starting at 12 p.m.

Ducks S.C.O.R.E. offers a two-pronged approach, in-class and physical education, to enrich the education of students. It includes a school supply donation for 18,000 students, an incentive-based reading program (Reading is the GOAL), a science & math program (First Flight Field Trip), and a street hockey program and tournament. S.C.O.R.E. is the primary program of the Anaheim Ducks Foundation. The mission of the Anaheim Ducks Foundation is to facilitate and support programs that produce positive change for children and families throughout Southern California by providing educational opportunities, broadening access to the sport of hockey and addressing the health and wellness needs of our community.
