Robidas Ruled Out for Postseason with Fractured Right Leg

Ducks defenseman Stephane Robidas is out for the remainder of the Stanley Cup Playoffs because of a fractured right leg suffered in the first minute of the second period in Monday night's Game 3 loss in Dallas.

On the play, Stars winger Ryan Garbutt dove for a loose puck near the Anaheim net, running into Robidas' leg and sending him to the ice. It's the second time this season the 37-year-old Robidas has endured a fracture in the leg, as he suffered the same injury in November while he was playing for the Stars. While still recovering, he was traded to the Ducks on March 4 for a conditional fourth-round draft pick and made a significant impact in 14 regular season games and the first three games of the postseason.

“He’s not only a good guy and a solid guy, but he’s a great player,” said Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano after practice in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon. “That’s a huge loss for us.”

Defenseman Ben Lovejoy echoed those same sentiments. “You feel awful for him,” Lovejoy said. “He’s battled to come back and he’s become a big part of our team. We will absolutely miss him on and off the ice.”

Cogliano questioned the play in which Robidas was injured. "You think about the play and you wonder how stupid it is, really, how pointless it is diving at a puck that really has no play on anything," Cogliano said. "It's not right, and you feel for him because the poor guy has broken his leg twice."

Many of the Ducks said they were using the loss of Robidas as added motivation in these playoffs.

“You want to win for him,” Cogliano said. “When you see a guy go down and break his leg for the second time in six months, you feel it down deep. I think a lot of guys did feel that and we’re looking to make things right.”

Fellow blueliner Luca Sbisa, who was scratched for the first three games of this series, lamented the injury but said it's an opportunity for other defensemen.

"Everyone felt pretty disgusted on how it happened," he said. "At the same time, it's an opportunity for other guys to play bigger minutes. He was a huge part of our team, and I think the guys will step up, play for him, play for the team and get it done.
