The Ducks announced today that captain Ryan Getzlaf has been named a finalist for the 2013-14 Mark Messier Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone. The Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award presented by Bridgestone has been awarded since 2006-07 and is given “to the player who exemplifies great leadership qualities to his team, on and off the ice during the regular season.” The selection of the three finalists and the ultimate winner is made by Mark Messier, a six-time Stanley Cup champion and one of three players to have captained three NHL teams (Edmonton, New York Rangers, Vancouver). The winner will be announced Tuesday, June 24 during the 2014 NHL Awards from Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas. The 2014 NHL Awards will be broadcast by NBCSN in the United States and CBC in Canada.

Leading Anaheim to a club-record 54-20-8 mark in 2013-14, Getzlaf was also active in the Orange County community. Getzlaf and Corey Perry launched the club’s Anaheim Ducks Learn to Play powered by Ryan Getzlaf & Corey Perry last September. The two stars committed to join instructional sessions and purchase Bauer equipment for skaters (to keep) who sign up for a hockey program within THE RINKS Development Program presented by Honda. In addition to Learn to Play, Getzlaf hosted the third annual Getzlaf Golf Shootout last September at the Monarch Beach Golf Links in Dana Point, benefiting CureDuchenne. A nonprofit based in Newport Beach, CureDuchenne raises awareness and funds research for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Duchenne is a progressive muscle-wasting disease that impacts one in every 3,500 boys.

Getzlaf, 28 (5/10/85), helped the Ducks finish with the top record in the Western Conference for the first time in franchise history and set season records for standings points (116), wins (54) and win (points) percentage (.707). Anaheim led the NHL in goals (263) for the first time in club history and also established season bests for goals, wins, home wins (29), road wins (25), home points (62) and road points (54).

Selected by Anaheim in the first round (19th overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Getzlaf scored 31-56=87 points with a +28 rating in 77 regular-season games. Getzlaf set career highs in goals and game-winning goals (7), while finishing second in the NHL in scoring, fifth in assists, tied for sixth in even-strength goals (26), and tied for second among forwards in blocked shots (87). He led the Ducks in scoring, assists and power-play points (23), and ranked third in plus/minus. His 31 penalty minutes (PIM) marked his lowest total since his rookie season in 2005-06 (22). Getzlaf also recorded a 14-game point streak (6-11=17) from Nov. 15-Dec. 15, tied for the NHL’s best in 2013-14. He missed only four games due to injury during the regular season, including three to an upper-body injury from Nov. 10-14 and one to a lower-body injury on Jan. 11.
