Postgame Quotes: Game 1 vs. LA
2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs Second Round Game 1
Kings lead 1-0
Anaheim 2 vs. Los Angeles 3 OT
May 3, 2014
On the game-tying goal
They just threw it at the net. I thought I got a piece of it, but it got up in the air and he batted it out of the air back door. We weren’t strong enough. We were too passive there.
On the overtime goal
They suddenly had a 2-on-1 out of nowhere. It was a shot-pass that went off the post and off my back and in. It’s too bad. We had a couple chances in OT to finish it, but at the end it’s still a 1-0 series. We need to focus on the next game and learn from this. We have room for improvement.
On tonight’s game
I thought we were on the forecheck really hard. They went down to five defensemen and we were all over them. [Jonathan] Quick, at the end of the day, made some good saves. I thought we were pretty good.
On the physical style of play
If you don’t play the type of style we played tonight, you just won’t beat them. Quick is too good, and they don’t give too much up. We could’ve got more than two goals. We had a number of chances that could’ve gone in.
Head coach Bruce Boudreau
On tonight’s game
When you get scored on with seven seconds to go, it’s a tough pill to swallow. This is what all the games are going to be like. We had opportunities to win the game. We didn’t convert, and they converted when they had to.
On the play of Jonathan Quick
We had great chances. Those are ones you have to bury. He’s a great goaltender, but I don’t know if there were great saves other than the one in the first period. That was a big difference maker with [Devante] Smith-Pelly.
LOS ANGELES KINGS
On tonight's game
It was great obviously, to come back and get this game one. It was a hard game and we expect this series to be like that. We are up one and we just have to keep playing.
On chemistry with Anze Kopitar
I think whoever would have been there, in my spot, he would have gotten it, too. I think we did a good job on the forecheck, and in the corner.
On the atmosphere
It is just a different series. We see them a lot in the regular season and this is our first time playing against them in the playoffs. We expect a tight series and we have seen them enough so we know about that a little bit. We just have to come back to game two and just play a fair game. They have a lot of talented players up front so we just have to eliminate some odd man rushes and make sure we get the puck in and don’t turn it over in the neutral zone. This is a character win and we just have to keep going.
On tonight's game
To be quite honest I don’t think I played my best game. There was a lot of mistakes I made. Some cost us and some fortunately didn’t cost us. The team played great and it was fortunate to get the win. They are a great team that we are playing. It is a hard fought game and we have to get ready for another one. The next one is going to be tougher than this one.
We see them a lot over the years so we know who we’re playing. Same for them, they know who they are playing. Not many surprises. They are a great team. We have a lot to prepare for. Like I said, next one is going to be tougher to get than this one.
Head coach Darryl Sutter
On Jeff Carter with Anze Kopitar and Marian Gaborik
It's 2-1 and it’s a pretty good hockey game. 10 minutes left in the third period, they play together on the power play. They were trying to tie the game.
On the second-period lull
I don’t think there was a lull in the second period. I think they came at us. We were down on defense and they came at us pretty hard. I don’t think there was a lull, I think both teams are going to try and play full games which they both did.
On Marian Gaborik
He played really well in the first round too. Gaborik’s got three goals, they’re big goals. He had a lot of good opportunities in the first round and to be quite honest he was a big reason we won the first round.
