Mighty Ducks-Red Wings Preview

GAME: Anaheim Mighty Ducks (13-16-4-5) at Detroit Red Wings (24-12-4-1).

TIME: Saturday, 7:30 p.m. EST.

Sergei Fedorov got battered in his first game back in Detroit -- literally.

The 6-foot-2 center hopes for a more memorable second trip to his former home when he leads the defending Western Conference champion Anaheim Mighty Ducks against the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Fedorov spent his first 13 seasons with the Red Wings before signing a five-year, $40-million contract with Anaheim in July. He did score a goal in his first trip back to Detroit on Dec. 3, but the Mighty Ducks gave up a season high in goals in a 7-2 loss.

Fedorov, who helped the Red Wings win three Stanley Cups, was booed every time he touched the puck, and was knocked out of part of the game after he was cut on the face during the first period. He missed a portion of the first and second periods while the wound was being repaired.

"It was a nice atmosphere," Fedorov said after the game. "Too bad we couldn't have done better."

Fedorov, Anaheim's leading scorer with 26 points, enters this game with just two points in his last six games.

The last-place Ducks had their two-game win streak snapped with Friday's 5-2 loss at Buffalo. Andy McDonald scored his second goal in as many nights for the Mighty Ducks, who have dropped four of six overall.

"We had a couple of good wins on this road trip and we had some momentum," Anaheim defenseman Keith Carney said. "We couldn't sustain it today."

Martin Gerber allowed five goals on 33 shots in losing for the third time in four starts. It was the first time in 29 games that he gave up more than three goals.

"I know I can play better," Gerber said. "They were sharp in our end."

The Red Wings are the league's highest-scoring team with 136 goals. They had little trouble at Carolina on Friday, beating the NHL's lowest-scoring squad 4-1.

Pavel Datsyuk and Steve Yzerman scored 1:06 apart in the first period, and Kris Draper added a short-handed goal for Detroit, which went 1-for-5 on the power play. The Red Wings were 1-for-23 on the man-advantage in their previous six games.

"It was a special teams night," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said.

The Red Wings have won two in a row, and are 9-2-1-1 in their last 13 games.

Detroit is tied with Philadelphia with a league-high 53 points.
