Oilers-Mighty Ducks Preview

GAME: Edmonton Oilers (2-0-0-0) at Anaheim Mighty Ducks (1-0-0-1).

TIME: Monday, 10:30 p.m. EDT.

The undefeated Edmonton Oilers may be without star left wing Ryan Smyth as they begin a two-game road trip with a matchup against the Mighty Ducks in Anaheim's home opener.

Smyth suffered a sprained left knee in the first period of Edmonton's 4-3 win Saturday over the Vancouver Canucks. Smyth's status for this game is uncertain.

Through two games this season, Smyth is tied for the team lead in assists (3) and points (4). He tallied 23 goals and 36 assists in 82 games in 2003-04.

Smyth has two goals in 36 career games against Anaheim. He is also one goal shy of 200 for his career.

The Oilers got two goals from left wing Raffi Torres, who added a shootout goal in the win over the Canucks. Torres has one goal in five career games against the Ducks.

Edmonton will close its first road trip of the season Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Anaheim was victimized by a former teammate Saturday as Paul Kariya scored the lone shootout goal in a 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators.

"When you lose a shootout, you feel like you've lost the hockey game," new Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "We didn't lose the hockey game. We lost a point and they gained a point."

The Ducks, however, may get some needed offense from Teemu Selanne, who played with Anaheim from 1995-2001.

Selanne, the 1992-93 rookie of the year while with the Winnipeg Jets, has 36 goals including 12 power-play tallies and seven game-winners in 54 career games against Edmonton.

Selanne has just two points so far, tying him with four others for the team lead.
