Ducks and Coyotes set for duel in the desert

DUCKS (15-14-7) at COYOTES (22-13-2)

Last 10 -- Anaheim 5-2-3; Phoenix 7-2-1

Season series -- The teams are meeting for the fifth time this season and the second in five days. The Ducks won 4-2 at the Honda Center last Saturday. Both teams have won their two home games, with Phoenix winning 3-2 in a shootout and 3-2 in overtime and the Ducks winning 3-2 in regulation. They don't see each other again until March 6.

Big story -- Two hot teams are getting together in the desert for their last games prior to the Christmas break. The Ducks rallied from a 2-0 deficit on Tuesday to beat the Avalanche 4-2 in Colorado for their fourth win in five games. The Coyotes are 9-2-1 in their last 12 after Monday's 5-2 thumping of Columbus. They would pass Los Angeles for second in the Pacific Division with a victory.

Team Scope:

Ducks -- The Ducks might not have needed a plane to fly to Phoenix after their four-goal rally in the final 7:34 turned a loss into a victory at Colorado. Anaheim had outshot Colorado 28-9 through two periods, but trailed 2-0 before the late rally.

"When you're down 2-0 with 8 minutes left, you think things are almost wrapped up," said Ryan Getzlaf, who scored for the fourth straight game when he beat Craig Anderson with 25.9 seconds left to break a 2-2 tie. "It's a situation where we battled pretty hard and got a few bounces and were able to get back on the board."

Coyotes -- Fans may not be packing Jobing.com Arena, but Glendale has become one of the toughest places in the NHL for visiting teams. The Coyotes have won their last seven home games -- their longest since winning eight straight from Feb. 12 to March 24, 2002.

"It's your building and you have to take advantage of the comfort of sleeping in your own bed and coming to the rink ready to your play," Scottie Upshall said after Monday's 5-2 win over Columbus. "It's important that we stick to having great starts at home."

Who's hot -- For the Ducks, Getzlaf has a four-game goal-scoring streak, Bobby Ryan has nine point during a seven-game points streak and Corey Perry has three assists in his last two games. … Upshall had 2 goals and 2 assists in the win over Columbus and is 3-3-6 in his last four games. After going eight games without a goal, Shane Doan has scored in each of his last two games.

Injury report -- Anaheim is without forwards Teemu Selanne (broken hand) and Joffrey Lupul (back surgery). … Phoenix center Vernon Fiddler missed Monday's game and is day-to-day with a lower-body injury sustained on Saturday.

Stat pack -- The Ducks have gone 5-1-3 in their past nine games to move above the .500 mark (15-14-7) for the first time since Oct. 14, when they were 3-2-1. … Phoenix goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov earned his 20th win by beating Columbus on Monday. His career high is 28.

Puck drop -- Anaheim is starting to hit its stride after a poor start, but the Coyotes are playing about as well as they've played since the franchise moved to Phoenix 13 years ago. Bryzgalov is playing at an All-Star level, and the forwards have started to give him a little more help.
