DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings' philosophy is simple: If games are going to be dominated by special teams, then you better be effective on the power play and killing penalties.

That was the case Friday night as Pavel Datsyuk, Robert Lang and Mikael Samuelsson scored power-play goals and Detroit beat the Anaheim Mighty Ducks 3-2.

``You look around the league and that's all anyone does, power play and penalty kill,'' said Jason Woolley, who had two assists.

It was the first game against his former team for Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. He coached the Mighty Ducks in 2002-03 and 2003-04. Anaheim swept Detroit in the first round of the 2003 playoffs and went on to the Stanley Cup finals, losing to the New Jersey Devils in seven games.

``It wasn't the same as usual,'' Babcock said. ``But once the game starts and you're playing, you just want to win the game.''

Manny Legace made 23 saves for Detroit, which improved to 7-1.

Teemu Selanne and Ryan Getzlaf, with his first NHL goal, scored for the Ducks.

Datsyuk opened the scoring 4:37 into the game when he converted from the left circle. Lang made it 2-0 with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that beat Ilya Bryzgalov, who was screened by Brendan Shanahan, at 9:56.

``I think we started out great, like gangbusters,'' Babcock said. ``Had them behind the 8-ball. But we couldn't get rid of them.''

The Ducks made it 2-1 with 2:41 remaining in the period when Selanne connected on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle.

Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle wasn't happy with all of the penalties his team received.

``I don't understand how they called that many power plays against us,'' he said. ``I don't understand how we're that bad. I guess the Detroit Red Wings get those calls in their building.''

Detroit had eight power-play opportunities and the Mighty Ducks four.

Samuelsson's sixth goal of the season made it 3-1, 4:55 into the third period. Getzlaf scored on a power play with 12:02 left in the third period.

``They stuck around,'' Woolley said. ``They're annoying as heck.''

Notes: Captain Steve Yzerman (groin) and C Kris Draper (eye) didn't play for Detroit. ... C Sergei Fedorov (groin) and G Jean-Sebastien Giguere didn't play for Anaheim. ... It was Red Wings D Mathieu Schneider's 1,000th NHL game.
