Ducks Get Off 50 Shots, Still Go Down to Columbus, 4-3
By Adam Brady (email@example.com)
ANAHEIM – The Ducks snapped off a season-high 50 shots, but couldn’t make enough of them count as they were edged 4-3 by the Columbus Blue Jackets at Honda Center.
It was the fourth straight loss for the Ducks and the first at home in the last six games. The Jackets, meanwhile, improved to 6-1-0 on the road.
The Ducks got to within a goal when Corey Perry
scored off a Ryan Getzlaf
tip feed with 12:38 remaining in the game. But Anaheim couldn't manage to get any closer due in great part to the play of goalie Steve Mason. The Calder Trophy (top NHL rookie) winner of two seasons ago had 47 saves on the night, and denied the Ducks on a number of late bids, including the final minute when they pulled goalie Jonas Hiller
for an extra attacker.
"When you get 50 shots, you need more than three goals," said Bobby Ryan
. "That falls on us, not him being so good."
The Ducks had 25 shots in that third period alone, and their 50 on the evening easily bested the previous high of 41 in a shootout loss to Atlanta on October 15. It was also the most since a franchise-record 54-shot effort on March 27, 2009 vs. Edmonton.
"When it rains, it pours," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf
. "When you’re scoring, all those things go in all the time. It’s just a situation where you have to keep after it, keep shooting pucks and they will go in.
"The third period we really needed a push. We got the start we wanted and we just couldn’t get another one past him."
The Ducks went into the second period trailing 1-0 after a Rick Nash first period tally, but quickly tied it thanks to a two-man advantage that carried over from the end of the first. Just 17 seconds into the period, Saku Koivu
and Teemu Selanne
pulled off a pretty give-and-go, with Koivu burying a Selanne feed right in front of the net. (Selanne ended up leaving midway through the third period with what is being reported as a sore groin.)
Anaheim went up a goal five minutes after Koivu’s conversion when Ryan scored on a breakaway while defending a Columbus power play. Todd Marchant
cleared the puck from his own end and Ryan chased it down with only Mason to beat, firing a wrist shot that hit off his leg pad and dove inside the post. It was the first shorthanded goal of Ryan’s career.
But Columbus evened it up soon afterward on that same power play, as Chris Clark deflected a Mike Commodore point shot under Hiller.
The Jackets would go on to score two more unanswered about three minutes apart, starting on the rush after a Kyle Palmieri
turnover, with Jakub Voracek chipping in a rebound off a Samuel Pahlsson shot from the slot. Then Commodore lifted a shot from the point that Hiller lost sight of, getting his left shoulder up after the puck had already passed him.
That ended up being enough to hold off the Ducks, who had a chance to take over the top spot in the Pacific Division with a win (though they have played four more games than the first-place Kings).
"We didn’t play with the desperation that was necessary for 60 minutes," said coach Randy Carlyle. "It seemed like we got up 2-1 and sat back. They didn’t change what they were doing. They just played a grinding road game."
The Ducks, whose four-game losing skid has come right after a six-game winning streak, have a chance to turn things around Sunday against Edmonton at Honda Center.
20:00 - END OF GAME - Mini brawl at the end of it after the horn started by Perry and Vermette, but it does nothing to affect the outcome of a tough 4-3 Ducks loss.
19:58 - Fowler tries Anaheim's 50th shot, blocked away by Mason and it's over.
19:30 - Getzlaf has his shot blocked, gets it back and tries another one that Mason easily stops.
18:15 - Timeout Ducks with 1:45 left and "Final Countdown" on the sound system. That works.
17:35 - Ducks with a heck of a chance, as the top line plays tic-tac-toe, but Getzlaf can't get off a decent shot off a nice Ryan feed.
Teemu Selanne is being evaluated in the locker room and is questionable to return. No reason given.
15:27 - Blake fires a shot from just inside the blue line that Mason blockers away, his 43rd of the night.
12:46 - Mason makes a huge stop with the glove as the power play ended, only because it got his gassed group off the ice.
12:30 - Ducks with a season-high 42 shots.
11:01 - Perry tries a shot from in deep, and Ryan picks up the rebound, spins and watches Mason make a huge pad save. Yeesh.
They've played a few more games than the Kings, but if the Ducks win tonight, they take over first place in the Pacific. We'll take it.
10:43 - CBJ Penalty - Chris Clark, 2 min. slashing. Clark chops the stick out of Blake's hand and it's another big PP for Anaheim.
9:52 - Ducks again almost get one, as Ryan takes in a risky Getzlaf pass and feeds Perry on the doorstep, but Mason gets over nicely.
7:35 - Ryan almost gets another, getting in front of Russell and trying to go to the backhand, but Mason kicks it away.
7:22 - ANAHEIM GOAL - COREY PERRY - Ducks catch a big break when Brassard tries to send it back to Methot behind the net and he can't get to it. Getzlaf is there, however, to tip it in front to Perry, who backhands it through. It's the 10th of the year for Perry, fourth in his last four games, and it's 4-3 Jackets.
6:10 - Fowler with his sixth shot on goal on the night, but Mason saves and controls the rebound with Getzlaf poking at him.
4:23 - CBJ Penalty - Jan Hejda, 2 min. boarding. Hejda throws Blake into the wall. Can't stress enough how big this is for Anaheim right now.
4:00 - Fowler a wrister, saved. Fowler a slap shot, saved.
2:10 - Brassard tries a shot from the left wing that glances the top of the crossbar. Too many chances early for CBJ.
1:40 - Hiller with a couple of big stops in a row, keeping the Ducks in this.
0:30 - Parros makes things interesting early, chipping at a puck from near the post that skitters across the crease.
0:00 - Off and running in the third, the Ducks with some ground to make up.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks get a power play goal from Koivu and a shorty from Ryan, but give up three to the Jackets and trail 4-2.
19:55 - Fowler throws it toward the net, where Blake is there for a backhand that's just saved.
16:56 - COLUMBUS GOAL - MIKE COMMODORE - Commodore throws the puck on net from just inside the blue line on right wing and for some reason, Hiller never sees it, lifting his left shoulder after the puck is past him. It's 4-2 Columbus.
13:48 - COLUMBUS GOAL - JAKUB VORACEK - Palmieri falls on his rear at center ice, turning the puck over to Columbus for the rush. Pahlsson fires from the slot off Hiller, and Voracek chips the rebound wide, but it hits Hiller's leg pad and bounces in behind him. It's 3-2 Columbus.
11:17 - ANA Penalty - Teemu Selanne
, 2 min. hooking. Selanne harassses Wilson a bit too much.
7:55 - Hiller sticks out the leg to just barely stop a wraparound try by Vermette.
PA guy Phil Hulett says "Break out your Aquanet and lip gloss for tonight's Kiss Cam!" Really? That's what we associate with the '80s, Aquanet and lip gloss? Alright then. First guy on the screen pretends to maul his woman, and it just happens to be one of our staffers. Nice.
5:26 - COLUMBUS GOAL (POWER PLAY) - CHRIS CLARK - The Jackets come right back, as Commodore fires a slap shot from the point that sails between Lydman's legs and is tipped under Hiller by Clark in front. We're tied 2-2.
5:01 - ANAHEIM GOAL (SHORTHANDED) - BOBBY RYAN - Ryan's insertion into the PK this year pays off on the other end, as Marchant clears the puck past a surprised Kris Russell and Ryan sees an opening, so he goes sprinting after it. He picks it up just inside the blue line with just Mason to beat and fires a wrister off the leg pad and just inside the post. Huge goal for the Ducks and it's 2-1. First career shorty for 9.
4:19 - ANA Penalty - Sheldon Brookbank
, 5 min. fighting and 2 min. roughing and CBJ Penalty - Derek Dorsett, 5 min. fighting. Well after the whistle, Brookbank and Dorsett tangle near the glass, and start raining blows upon each other. Broobank lands a nice couple of rights and takes Dorsett down. Nicely done, Sheldon. Unfortunately, two extra minutes for him for starting it all.
2:10 - Getzlaf gets on a miniature breakaway, fakes a slap shot and slips the puck under Mason, but it clangs the far post. Wow, that was close.
1:30 - Just as the power play is about to end, Selanne fires wide.
0:17 - ANAHEIM GOAL - SAKU KOIVU - Well, that was quick. Koivu hits Selanne on the right wing on the rush and no one is there to pick up Koivu, as Selanne gives it back to him at the top of the crease and he easily chips it in. It's 1-1 and the Ducks remain on the power play.
0:00 - Second starts with Ducks up two men.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks go down 1-0 on a Nash goal, but they'll have a minute and a half of 5 on 3 time when we come back.
19:42 - CBJ Penalty - Marc Methot, 2 min. hooking. Perry tries to cut to the net and gets taken down right in front of Mason by Methot. A lenghty 5 on 3 for Anaheim.
19:31 - CBJ Penalty - Jan Hejda, 2 min. hooking. Hejda takes down Bonino in the corner of the Columbus end.
18:05 - Clark tries a wraparound that Hiller denies, then does the same on the rebound try.
15:20 - Selanne hits Koivu on the rush, shot saved.
11:02 - COLUMBUS GOAL - RICK NASH - Nash (who else?) takes a pass from Brassard on the right wing and cuts hard to the middle away from Getzlaf, firing a shot from the slot that beats Hiller glove side. It's a goal met with utter silence from this crowd and it's 1-0 Jackets.
8:09 - Perry gives Ryan a cross-ice pass, and he kicks it to his stick and fires, but right into Mason.
A somewhat rotund man gets VERY into it dancing to C&C Music Factory (yeah, that's right) during the timeout. Crowd loves it. He's got to be winded.
6:27 - Heck of a job by the Ducks PK, as the Jackets don't get close to a threat.
4:27 - ANA Penalty - Josh Green
, 2 min. holding. Green gets called for grabbing Methot along the wall.
3:30 - Selanne makes a great feed from behind the net to Blake, who tries to deke to the backhand, but gets denied.
1:30 - Getzlaf makes a nice stretch pass to a waiting Ryan at the blue line, and he tries to tap to himself to create a breakaway, but Mason knocks it away.
0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.
7:06 p.m. - Another nice job on the anthem by regular Amanda Guerrero.
Starters in bold/italics. Scratches crossed out.
