Ducks Earn Point, But Cannot Snap Detroit's Home Win Streak in Shootout Loss
Associated Press

Anaheim came close to snapping the Red Wings' long home win streak, but ultimately fell just short 2-1 shootout loss.

Possibly the best opportunity for the Ducks to win it came in overtime, when Cam Fowler got loose on a breakaway with the teams skating 3-on-3. The defenseman had Detroit goaltender Joey MacDonald beat, but his shot rang off the post.

Pavel Datsyuk and Teemu Selanne traded scores in the first round of the shootout. Jiri Hudler and Corey Perry were each denied in the second round. After Todd Bertuzzi beat Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller to start the third round, Bobby Ryan could not convert and the Red Wings secured their 19th straight victory at Joe Louis Arena.

The long home win streak, one short of the NHL record, began with a Nov. 5 win over Anaheim. Detroit tied the 1970-71 Boston Bruins for the second-longest home streak in NHL history. The 1975-76 Philadelphia Flyers and the 1929-30 Bruins won 20 consecutive games at home.

George Parros scored for Anaheim, and Hiller stopped 23 shots. An apparent goal by Anaheim's Niklas Hagman 3:35 into the second period was waved off because of Parros' penalty for goalie interference.

Jakub Kindl scored for Detroit. MacDonald made 29 saves in regulation and overtime.

Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom played in his 1,549th game to tie former Detroit star Alex Delvecchio's NHL record for games with one team. It's also the second-most games played in Detroit franchise history, behind Gordie Howe at 1,687.

Parros scored his first goal of the season to open the scoring with 3:43 left in the first period. The Anaheim enforcer deflected in Rod Pelley's shot from the point.

Kindl tied it with 1:18 left in the opening period, beating Hiller with a wrist shot from the point. It was Kindl's second goal.

NOTES: It was Detroit right wing Tomas Holmstrom's 1,000th game. He joins Howe, Delvecchio, Lidstrom Steve Yzerman and Kris Draper as the only players who have played 1,000 games for the Red Wings. ... Detroit right wing Danny Cleary didn't play because he had his left knee drained and got a cortisone shot. He is expected to miss two more games. Jan Mursak replaced him in the lineup. ... Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard missed his fourth game because of a broken right index finger. He hopes to start taking shots in practice Saturday. ... Fowler grew up in the Detroit-area suburb of Farmington Hills and played junior hockey with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League. Windsor is across the Detroit River from Detroit.
