Palmieri Strikes Twice in 4-0 Victory over the Red Wings

By Adam Brady (abrady@anaheimducks.com)

ANAHEIM – Young Kyle Palmieri made certain the Ducks wouldn’t miss Corey Perry too much tonight.

As Perry sat out a second straight game with a shoulder injury, the 21-year-old Palmieri scored two goals, and played a significant role in another, to help the Ducks to a satisfying 4-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings before 16,331 at Honda Center.

Palmieri lit the lamp in a three-goal barrage in the second period and added another in the third as the Ducks snapped a three-game losing streak and handed Detroit its fifth loss in the last six.

"It was an awesome night for me," Palmieri said. "I was lucky enough to score two tonight. Confidence, it definitely feels good. Hopefully going forward, I can keep making an impact on the game and help this team put together a nice win streak."

Jonas Hiller saved all 23 Detroit shots to earn the Ducks’ second-ever shutout over the Red Wings (the other coming May 30, 1997) and the first at home.

"We played a good hockey team there. Guys played well and buried their chances tonight," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. "We did a lot of good things. It wasn’t just the offense. We played well in our own zone and clogged up the neutral zone against a good puck-possession team. That changes everything against that group."

The Red Wings, coming off a 5-2 loss last night in LA, were without mainstays Pavel Datsyuk (recovering from February knee surgery) and Nicklas Lidstrom (deep ankle bruise), not to mention defensemen Jonathan Ericsson (wrist) and Jakub Kindl (upper body). The Ducks were also missing defenseman Luca Sbisa, who was out for a second straight game with back spasms.

Following a scoreless first, the Ducks exploded for three goals in the second to vault to a 3-0 lead. Teemu Selanne led things off 8:52 into the period, as Cam Fowler sent the puck from the right wing wall into goalie Joey MacDonald, and Selanne whacked the puck with his stick enough to get it to flutter over MacDonald’s shoulder. The goal gave Selanne 1,400 points and came just a game after he passed countryman and friend Jari Kurri on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. Kurri happened to be in attendance at tonight’s game.

Almost seven minutes after Selanne scored his 660th career goal, Palmieri scored his third (second of the season). He stripped the puck from unsuspecting defenseman Brendan Smith and went right to the net, backhanding it top shelf.

"(Most impressive) was his ability to get open," said coach Bruce Boudreau of Palmieri. "Earlier before he scored, Getzlaf set him up on a couple of real nice chances. He didn’t capitalize on those. He showed those quick hands when he stripped the puck from Smith. It was a great play."

With a little more than a minute left in the period, Getzlaf took the puck away from Justin Abdelkader, and seconds later backhanded the puck on net. With Palmieri hovering over him, MacDonald sticked the puck out to Bobby Ryan, who banged it home.

Palmieri struck again early in the third, just barely staying onside as he flagged down a Getzlaf pass, then crashing the net before backhanding the puck past MacDonald.

"When he gets that puck on his stick, he knows what to do with it," Getzlaf said of Palmieri. "He always has. It’s a matter of him working the walls and stuff properly. He did that well tonight. He worked hard in our zone too. That is the way to stay in this league, to work those boards and find those areas."

Getzlaf had two assists and, along with linemates Palmieri and Ryan, was plus-3 on the night.

The Ducks face another archrival, the LA Kings, on Friday night at Honda Center.

GAME NOTES

Anaheim is 11-6-4 in its last 21 games and 20-8-5 in its last 33. In addition, the club has won three straight and has gone 12-2-1 in its last 15 at Honda Center.

Tonight marked the first time in club history the Ducks have shut out the Red Wings at HOME. It’s the second shutout overall for Anaheim vs. Detroit, the first taking place on Mar. 30, 1997 at Joe Louis Arena (1-0, Steve Rucchin OT goal).

In addition, tonight marked Anaheim’s biggest win (by four goals) over Detroit in club history (previous record was three goals, set three times, last: Jan. 5, 2010 at Honda Center, 4-1 win).

Anaheim has outshot its opponents in nine of the last 12 games (385-305) and in 20 of the last 24 (763-606).

After passing childhood idol Jari Kurri for 19th in all-time points on Monday night at Colorado, Teemu Selanne went on to score his 1,400th NHL point tonight (660-740=1,400 in 1,330 career games), the game-winning goal vs. Detroit. He is now just the third European-born player to reach the 1,400-point milestone (also Jaromir Jagr (currently 1,645 at eighth place and Stan Mikita with 1,467 in 14th place). Selanne has a two-game goal streak (2-0=2) and has earned 2-3=5 points in his last seven contests. One of six Ducks to have appeared in all 71 contests this season, Selanne is on pace for a 69-point season.

Jonas Hiller picked up his 15th career shutout (first against Detroit) and fourth of the season this evening, stopping all 23 shots he faced. He made his 30th consecutive start tonight, a streak that dates back to Jan. 12 vs. Calgary. His streak is the longest since San Jose’s Antti Niemi started 34 straight games from Jan. 15-Apr. 4, 2011. Should he start on Friday vs. Los Angeles, Hiller will match the second-longest streak for consecutive starts since the beginning of the 2010-11 season (Ryan Miller started 31 straight games from Nov. 13, 2010-Feb. 13, 2011). Over the last four contests, Hiller has stopped 98-of-105 shots for a .933 SV% and 1.75 GAA (7 GA/240 MIN). In his 30 consecutive starts, Hiller has gone 17-8-5 with a 1.90 GAA (57 GA/1802 MIN) and a .927 SV% (726-of-783).

Kyle Palmieri scored a career-high two goals this evening, becoming the first Ducks rookie since Matt Beleskey to score two-or-more goals in a game (Apr. 9, 2010 at St. Louis, 2-0=2).

Scoring his 26th goal of the season tonight, Bobby Ryan has collected 3-4=7 points in his last seven games.

GAME LOG

3rd Period

20:00 - END OF GAME - This one's over, 4-0.

16:30 - Palmieri almost gets his third, shooting just wide and he's taken down.

16:11 - Ryan does tumbling to the ice slinging a one-timer off a Getzlaf pass, and MacDonald is ready for it.

12:11 - Hiller with another great stop, gloving a point blank tap by Holmstrom, then sharing a laugh with Brookbank, who shielded him pretty good on that one and might have gotten his stick in a sensitive spot on Hiller.

11:13 - Ducks kill it, as Detroit goes 0 for its last 27 on the PP. Think they miss Lidstrom and Datsyuk?

9:13 - ANA Penalty - Toni Lydman, 2 min. holding. Lydman takes a bad angle on Filppula, then grabs onto him to recover.

8:20 - Hiller with a stellar point blank save on Holstrom to keep the shutout alive.

7:41 - Bonino with an open chance from the right circle, but MacDonald tucks it in.

1:41 - DET Penalty - Doug Janik, 2 min. slashing.

1:22 - ANAHEIM GOAL - KYLE PALMIERI - Palmieri just does stay onside while reaching back to grab a pass from Getzlaf, then beats Quincey to the net, moving to the backhand before sending it past MacDonald. Second of the night for Palmieri and it's 4-0 Ducks.

Perry and Sbisa take a seat in the press box, enjoying the free popcorn.

0:00 - Off and running in the third.

2nd Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - A heck of a second for the Ducks, who get goals from Selanne, Palmieri and Ryan to go up 3-0.

18:55 - ANAHEIM GOAL - BOBBY RYAN - Getzlaf makes it happen seconds after prying the puck away from Abdelkader. He backhands the puck on net from left wing, where Palmieri punches it off MacDonald and Ryan sends in the rebound to make it 3-0.

15:49 - ANAHEIM GOAL - KYLE PALMIERI - With the Wings looking to head up ice, Palmieri strips the puck from an unsuspecting Smith, goes right to the net and backhands it top shelf. It's his second of the year and it's 2-0 Anaheim.

12:29 - ANA Penalty - Todd Bertuzzi, 2 min. hooking. Bertuzzi gets Getzlaf while trying to pressure in the Anaheim end.

10:30 - Hiller slides from post to post to rob Kronwall's one-timer. Nice stop.

9:12 - ANA Penalty - Matt Beleskey, 2 min. clipping. Beleskey goes in low on Brendan Smith and makes some contact.

8:52 - ANAHEIM GOAL - TEEMU SELANNE - From the right wing wall, Fowler throws the puck into MacDonald, and Selanne whacks at it enough to get it to deflect off the goalie and flutter over his shoulder. That's 1,400 points for the Finnish Flash and it's 1-0 Ducks.

8:40 - Ducks with a few scoring chances, denied by either MacDonald or the pipe.

8:00 - Getzlaf with a nice backhand pass to Palmieri, in the spot Perry normally occupies, but his shot is knocked away by MacDonald.

1:43 - Getzlaf's pass in front deflects off a Red Wing toward the net, and MacDonald is alert enough to catch it.

0:49 - Ducks kill it. Wings 0 for their last 25 on the PP.

0:00 - Here we go in the second, Pelley in the box for 49.

1st Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - A relatively uneventful first period ends scoreless with Pelley in the box for 49 more seconds in the second.

18:48 - ANA Penalty - Rod Pelley, 2 min. interference. Hard to see where the penalty occurred behind the Detroit net.

17:50 - Just after missing a scoring chance, Blake goes toppling over a drawn-out MacDonald, but no call.

16:05 - Getzlaf with a nice shovedown of Kronwall.

14:15 - Helm with a nice redirect on the rush, just wide.

12:15 - Cross-ice shot pass by Beauchemin goes under Ryan's stick at the far post.

12:00 - Palmieri walks out from behind the net and shoots off MacDonald.

Jari Kurri shown on the video board during the timeout, in attendance coincidentally a game after Selanne passed him on the all-time scoring list.

8:33 - Ryan slings one from the right wing, sticked away by MacDonald.

6:50 - Mursak (who?) with a try from the right wing circle, but fires wide.

1:30 - Ryan with a chance from the left circle, but fires it across the crease.

0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.

Pregame

This tribute to Saku Koivu being showed on the video board right now, as he's honored for 1,000 games played. He joins wife Hanna and kids Ilona and Aatos at center ice to pose for a few photos and receive an engraved silver stick from owner Henry Samueli, a vintage bottle of wine from Ryan Getzlaf and a Tiffany crystal from Rob Blake, representing the NHL. Nice moment as the crowd stands and applauds.

Perry (shoulder) and Sbisa (back) out for the Ducks, and as expected, Datsyuk (knee) and Lidstrom (ankle) are sitting for Detroit. Parros a healthy scratch.

Starters in bold/italics.
