ANAHEIM – A 3-2 defeat to the defending champion Bruins was made all the more crushing by an apparent Ducks tying goal that was waved off in the third period.
Matt Beleskey’s one-timer through an Andrew Cogliano screen that got past goalie Marty Turco at 7:22 of the third was ruled a goal on the ice, and appeared to draw Anaheim even with Boston 2-2. But the goal was cancelled after an officials’ conference, apparently because Cogliano interfered with Turco (though replays showed he never made contact with the Boston netminder).
"At the end of the day, I didn’t touch him whatsoever," Cogliano said. "I didn’t know it was goalie interference. I asked the linesman and he said he thought maybe I was impending him from making a save. I thought he was kind of set before the puck went in. The puck was already going in before he was trying to make a save. That is just how it goes."
The Ducks and their fans among the 17,395 at Honda Center were incensed, and further frustrated when Brian Rolston scored on the rush six minutes later to put the Bruins in front 3-1.
Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau was asked how referee Rob Martell explained the disallowed goal and said, "There was no explanation given to me. None ... What do you want me to say? It cost us. It cost us the game. Sure, they got another goal. We would have played completely different if there was a 2-2 tie with 10 minutes to go. We would have tried to take into overtime because one point to us is really important right now."
Added Cogliano, "You are working so hard and you’re putting everything on the line to win games, especially against good teams like this. For that to happen is unfortunate."
Lubomir Visnovsky got the Ducks within a goal again with 2:29 left in the game, wristing a shot from the slot after intercepting a Boston clearing attempt. But that was as close as the Ducks would get, despite pulling Jonas Hiller on a couple of occasions in the final minute and a half.
The 36-year-old Turco, who signed with the Bruins in March, had 25 saves to earn his first win since March of last year (while with Chicago). He improved to 25-9-3 in his career vs. Anaheim, though all of his previous appearances were during his nine seasons with the Dallas Stars.
The Bruins are a perfect 29-0-0 when leading after two periods and 35-0-0 when taking a two-goal lead in a game.
After a scoreless first, Boston struck with two goals in a span of 1:22 to take a 2-0 lead. Zdeno Chara sent a relatively benign shot toward the net from the left point, and it glanced off the stick blade of Francois Beauchemin and got under Jonas Hiller.
Then on the rush, Chris Kelly faked a shot and dropped to Benoit Pouliot on the wing, and he sent a shot from the top of the circle past Hiller stick side.
Teemu Selanne got the Ducks back in it with a power play goal halfway through the session, as Cam Fowler’s slap shot deflected off his stick shaft and darted under the crossbar. It was the 248th career power play goal for Selanne, who moved past Luc Robitaille for fourth on the NHL’s all-time list.
The loss has the Ducks (12th in the Western Conference) on the brink of being officially eliminated from the postseason with six games remaining.
"The whole thing is tough to swallow," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. "We’ve worked really hard the last three months. We just had such a big hole to come out of. I guess we’ll see what happens Wednesday (vs. the Sharks at Honda Center)."
Said Boudreau, "We’ll continue doing what we’re doing, which is playing hard. We get a chance to stop San Jose. Let’s prevent them from making it. It is do whatever we can to win. There is a lot of character in that room. We’ve had one of the better records in the NHL from the beginning of January, so let’s try to continue to work on that. It’ll be something to really look forward to coming into next year."
20:00 - END OF GAME - Bs win the draw to the corner and keep it their until the horn. Tough loss to take, 3-2.
19:54 - Bs ice it with 5.2 seconds left. Ducks need a miracle.
19:30 - Hiller to the bench again after the Ducks get control.
19:23 - Ducks go offside on a Getzlaf slapped dump-in for the second time in the last minute.
18:56 - Boston takes timeout and Hiller is going back in net. Rocky music in the building. Let's get this done.
18:19 - Hiller to the bench with 1:41 left.
17:31 - ANAHEIM GOAL - LUBOMIR VISNOVSKY - Seconds after Perry hits the post behind a diving Turco, the puck is cleared to Visnovsky's stick, and he slings it off Turco and under the bar to get the Ducks within one. First goal since January 21 for Visnovsky.
15:39 - Turco stops Koivu's slap shot with Bonino draped over him.
13:01 - BOS Penalty - Tyler Seguin, 2 min. high sticking. Seguin gets Selanne up high. A gap of a few years between those two guys.
13:06 - BOSTON GOAL - BRIAN ROLSTON - Chara takes the puck away from Visnovsky and the Bs get on the rush, with Kelly feeding across to Rolston, who hammers a one-timer from the right wing circle. Bruins go up 3-1.
11:32 - Hiller tucks away a slap shot from the point.
10:40 - Ryan redirect goes just wide. Loud "awwwww!!!" by the crowd.
7:30 - Boudreau still fuming.
7:22 - Just after Turco escapes from a puck bouncing in the crease, but just short of the stripe, Beleskey one-times a Smith-Pelly feed past a screening Cogliano and Turco. They review it and determine that Cogliano was in the crease before the shot, which isn't even against NHL rules anymore. Never made contact with Turco. Crowd not at all pleased, and they shouldn't be. That isn't even a reviewable offense, by the way, according to NHL rules.
Nice moment again as we honor a member of the military, this one a female member of the Army National Guard.
7:01 - Hiller with a good stop on Seguin's rocket. Bs owning this period so far.
4:51 - Kill.
3:30 - Chara dives to knock the puck away from Getzlaf and thwart a potential shorthanded rush. He's good.
3:27 - Shot from the point gets past Hiller and lodged in the outside of the net. Looked at first like it was in there. Didn't care for that.
2:51 - ANA Penalty - Luca Sbisa, 2 min. interferene. Sbisa takes out Thornton, who was chasing the puck-carrying Getzlaf.
1:25 - Koivu loudly rings the post from the right circle. Had Turco beat.
I've got some disturbing news. Boston is 28-0-0 when leading after two periods and 34-0-0 when they hold a two-goal lead in a game.
0:00 - Here we go in the third.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Bruins get two, but Ducks get one back from Selanne and it's 2-1.
19:00 - Blake is about to make a pass to Getzlaf on the rush and Zdeno takes the puck away with his six-foot-long arms.
16:30 - Cogliano gets on a 2-on-1 with Hagman and fires wide of the net.
Kinda like the thing we do during the timeout for Smile Generation, where we show fans smiling for the camera. And having it to the tune of a little Chaka Khan doesn't hurt.
13:00 - Turco with a big stop on a Beauchemin missile.
9:11 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - TEEMU SELANNE - The Ducks make Boston pay quickly, as Fowler rips a slap shot from the top of the left wing circle and Selanne tips it with his stick shaft under the cross bar. There are Ducks goal cheers and there are Teemu goal cheers, and you could plainly hear the difference on this one. It's 2-1 as Selanne passes Luc Robitaille for fourth in all-time power play goals with 248.
9:00 - BOS Penalty - Adam McQuaid, 2 min. holding. McQuaid holds up Ryan against the wall.
8:55 - Turco robs a wide open Bonino on the delayed whistle, though he was off balance.
8:50 - Palmieri takes the puck away and fires just wide.
5:59 - Boudreau calls timeout.
5:59 - BOSTON GOAL - BENOIT POULIOT - On the rush, Kelly fakes a shot and drops to Pouliot on the left wing, and he sends it from the top of the circle past Hiller on the stick side. It's 2-0.
4:37 - BOSTON GOAL - ZDENO CHARA - Chara puts a relatively benign shot on net and it tips off Beauchemin's stick and gets under Hiller. Both Beauchemin and Hiller throw their heads back in frustration.
2:01 - Thornton swoops by Lydman, but Hiller makes the stop on the point blank backhand.
0:00 - Off and running in the second.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Right at the horn, Turco comes out of his crease to dive on a puck off the end boards and Perry goes flying over him. Exciting end to what was previously a pretty ho-hum first.
18:40 - Hiller knocks down a Rolston blast.
17:20 - Deflected puck comes into the crowd hot. Nobody hurt though.
16:45 - Hiller with a big stop in a crowd.
15:08 - Ryan is robbed by Turco with the left hand on a rebound try off a Fowler shot.
14:28 - Turco gloves a Selanne bid. He's seen a few shots from 8 over the years.
Housequake by Prince during the timeout. Haven't heard that one in ages.
14:01 - BOS Penalty - Andrew Ference, 2 min. tripping. Ference takes down Beleskey in the corner.
13:00 - Pouliot rudely swipes the puck from Fowler, but the wide open shot deflects off Hiller's left arm and away from danger.
10:15 - Perry gets leveled into the glass by Zanon after shuttling the puck in front.
9:30 - No, Chara isn't strong at all. Moves the unmoveable Smith-Pelly off the puck.
Two fans compete in karaoke to Livin' on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. One dude and one middle-aged lady. They're both awful. The woman gets slightly bigger applause, but they give the win to the dude.
7:12 - Ducks kill. No shots for the Bs on that PP.
5:12 - ANA Penalty - Lubomir Visnovsky, 2 min. tripping. Lubo takes down Rolston at the Anaheim blue line.
4:00 - A Beauchemin blast is tipped just wide.
3:26 - Hiller with some leather robbery of Peverley, who was left alone in the slot. Big save.
0:10 - Marty Turco's led pads are the color of a New York taxi cab. And very bright.
0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.
Smith-Pelly back on the top line with Perry and Getzlaf. Turco makes his 45th career appearance vs. Anaheim, the first with Boston. All the rest were with Dallas.
Starters in bold/italics.
