GLENDALE, Ariz. – There was already a sense of déjà vu with the Ducks playing Phoenix in Glendale for the second time in three nights. Unfortunately for Anaheim, the result was exactly the same as well.
Just as they did two nights ago at Jobing.com arena, the Ducks gave up one-goal leads twice in the third period and ultimately lost 5-4 in a shootout. After Phoenix’s Steve Sullivan and Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf each connected in the second round of the shootout, the two teams went two rounds without a conversion before Oliver Ekman-Larsson connected top shelf. Goalie Mike Smith locked up the game when he denied a Bobby Ryan attempt with the leg pad.
"They responded well," Getzlaf said. "Every time we scored, they came back with a great shift or a goal. That's tough to defend. We got two points out of four on the road, but we've got to make sure we get the next two."
The third period was again a mixture of Ducks elation and frustration, as twice in the first eight minutes, Anaheim took the lead only to watch Phoenix tie it soon afterward. Two minutes into the period and on the power play, Getzlaf fed a charging Corey Perry, who redirected the puck through from the slot to make it 3-2 Ducks.
Just 11 seconds later, Shane Doan tied it up with a shot from the right wing that got between the pads of Jonas Hiller (36 saves tonight).
"It's tough getting scored on twice right after we scored," Hiller said. "It was a tough game to play. The puck was all over the place and it was tough to read what was happening. It could have possibly gone either way, and it's tough to lose again that way."
At 6:31, Nick Bonino jumped on a bouncing puck and immediately crossed it over to Ryan, who sent it home from the slot to give Anaheim a 4-3 advantage.
But Phoenix knotted it up yet again a little more than a minute later, as Michael Stone took a shot from the top of the right circle that Matthew Lombardi tipped past Hiller on the glove side.
The Coyotes had a couple of chances in the overtime, notably when former Duck Kyle Chipchura ran down a puck for a partial breakaway, but Francois Beauchemin dove to knock the puck away just before Hiller made a big save on Keith Yandle on the rebound.
The Ducks took the game’s first lead halfway through the opening frame, as Getzlaf skated out from the corner and fired a cross-ice pass that may not have been intended for Matt Beleskey, but it ended up on his stick. He took it and fired a shot from the slot that got under Smith.
Anaheim went into the first break with that 1-0 lead, but didn’t look as strong in the second while giving up two Phoenix goals in the first 6 1/2 minutes. Just 59 seconds into the middle session, Ekman-Larsson took a shot from the wing that was tipped by David Moss and caromed off Hiller. Antoine Vermette was right there to punch in the rebound from just outside the crease.
Phoenix took the lead at 6:34, as Ekman-Larsson slid the puck inside the blue line to Yandle, who tagged a one-timer past Hiller’s glove.
The Ducks re-tied it near the very end of the period, while defending a Coyotes power play that followed a Beleskey high-sticking call. Perry shuttled the puck into the Coyotes end, where Getzlaf chased it down on the right wing. Just as the Coyotes defense converged on him, he let go of a wrist shot that beat Smith for the shorthander with 7.8 seconds left.
That was part of a three-point night for Getzlaf, but it wasn’t enough as the Ducks suffered their first consecutive losses of the season. They’ll have their shot at payback two nights from now, when they face these same Coyotes at Honda Center.
"We got two points here, but we had chances to win both games and we didn’t get the job done," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau. "Whatever happened, it’s got to end."
Said Getzlaf, "We’ve got a little work to do. They’re a good team, and we didn’t allow ourselves to get going at any time. Every time we did something in a positive way, we took a step back. We’ve got to go back home and take care of our building now."

19:52 - ANAHEIM GOAL (SHORTHANDED) - An absolutely gargantuan goal for the Ducks on the PK, as Perry send it into the Phoenix end and Getzlaf runs it down near the left wing wall. Just as the Phoenix defense is about to catch up. Getzlaf slings it past Smith for the shorty with 7.8 seconds left in the period. "He was like a god walking amongst mere mortals. He had a voice that could make a wolverine purr and suits so fine they made Sinatra look like a hobo." We're tied.
18:29 - ANA Penalty - Matt Beleskey, 2 min. high sticking. Beleskey gets Ekman-Larsson up high near the Coyotes net. "Great story. Compelling and rich."
During the stoppage, they play a rather bland cover of "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince. They covered that song?

14:55 - Getzlaf takes Beleskey with him on the attack, but they rule Beleskey offside. "It's a formidable scent... It stings the nostrils."

10:12 - ANAHEIM GOAL - MATT BELESKEY - Getzlaf comes out fo the corner and makes a nice cross-ice feed that may have been intended for someone else, but Beleskey cuts it off and fires it under Smith from the slot. It's 1-0 Ducks. "I will have you know that I have more talent and more intelligence in my little finger than you do in your entire body, sir."
6:10 - Another abnormal stoppage as Beleskey tries to flip the puck in the corner and hits the scoreboard. "Don't act like you're not impressed."
5:10 - Stoppage in play as there's something on the ice, which looks from here like a second puck that someone must have throw on there. "I did not see that coming."
3:25 - Cogliano spins and fires a backhand on net. Normally it seems like anything he shoots in this arena goes in. "Wow, this burrito is delicious, but it is filling." (Nothing to do with Cogliano. I just like that line.)
1:58 - Winnik takes a hard hit in the corner, but heads off on his own. "By the beard of Zeus!"
0:00 - And we're underway in Glendale for Ducks-Coyotes. "We have a saying in my country - the coyote of the desert likes to eat the heart of the young and the blood drips down to his children for breakfast, lunch and dinner and only the ribs will be broken."
7:08 p.m. - Excellent job on the anthem by (I forgot his name). "I'm expressing my inner anguish THROUGH THE MAJESTY OF SONG!"
"Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention. I've just been handed an urgent and horrifying news story. I need all of you, to stop what you're doing and listen." Palmieri (upper body) and Allen scratched. Hiller gets the start in net.
Starters in bold/italics.
