Ducks Go Streakin' in 4-0 Victory Over Flames

By Adam Brady
AnaheimDucks.com

ANAHEIM – The Anaheim Ducks simply refuse to lose at home, and they certainly don’t do it against the Calgary Flames.

The Ducks’ 4-0 victory in front of 15,839 at Honda Center was the 10th in a row at Honda Center, the longest in the NHL this season. It was also the 16th straight win at home over the Flames in the regular season, dating all the way back to January 19, 2004.

Daniel Winnik, Bobby Ryan, Sheldon Souray and newly re-signed Ryan Getzlaf did more than enough scoring, as Viktor Fasth was superb with 29 saves in his second NHL shutout. Combined with Jonas Hiller's 2-0 blanking of Phoenix two nights earlier, it was the first time in club history the Ducks had recorded back-to-back shutouts with two different goalies.

Fasth was possibly most valuable when the Ducks were outplayed and outshot 10-4 in the first period, but they still came away with a 1-0 lead thanks to a Winnik goal very early in the game. Just 1:15 after the opening draw, Andrew Cogliano took the puck behind the cage and fed in front to Winnik for the snap shot. It was Winnik's first goal since starting the season with five goals in four games.

“It was a big relief," said Winnik of his first goal since January 26. "I thought, as a line, we’ve been playing well and I’ve had some chances lately and just snakebit.”

Anaheim (17-3-3) came on strong in the bottom half of the second period, getting goals from Ryan and Souray within a little more than two minutes of each other to go out in front 3-0. At 13:38, Getzlaf (who inked an eight-year extension this morning) hustled to chase down a loose puck and got it to Corey Perry at the back wall. He shuttled it in front to Ryan, who one-timed it through and showed he was no worse for wear after leaving with an apparent injury in the first period.

At 15:52, Brad Staubitz got the puck back to Souray at the point, and the big defenseman unleashed a missile that sailed through traffic and beat goalie Miikka Kiprusoff.

“We didn’t’ start the game we wanted to," Getzlaf said. "Our goalie played unbelievable in the first period to give us even a chance. To come out 1-0 after that period, we were pretty thankful for that. But the guys did a good job tightening things up after that and we got the win.”

With the Ducks already in command, Perry drew a penalty in the corner, and during the delayed whistle, Ryan fashioned a pretty redirect tip of a Luca Sbisa pass that led to Getzlaf dragging it over the stripe to make it 4-0.

“We sure were outplayed in the first half of the game," said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau. "Thank goodness for Viktor. Once we scored the second goal, we started to get our legs and started to do the right things, and I think they were frustrated. A win is a win.”

GAME NOTES

Tonight’s win pushed Anaheim’s HOME streak to 10 games, matching the second-longest home win streak in club history (Feb. 17-Mar. 26, 2008) and the longest since a franchise-record 11 straight at Honda Center from Dec. 8, 2009 – Feb. 10, 2010. The club has gone 10-1-0 at Honda Center this season, the best record through 11 games in club history.

The Ducks’ 10-game win streak at Honda Center is the longest in the NHL this season.

This marks the fifth time in club history the Ducks have recorded consecutive shutouts (last: Jan. 7 & 9, 2011, Hiller). It is also the FIRST time in club history it has happened with two different goalies (Hiller & Fasth). Anaheim’s scoreless minutes streak now stands at 137:11 dating back to Monday’s contest at Phoenix (7:49 of the third, Michael Stone).

Anaheim’s 17-3-3 record (37 points) is the club’s best-ever mark through 23 games (previously 15-2-6 for 36 points in 2006-07). The club has earned standings points in six straight (5-0-2, 10 points) and has earned points in 12 of the last 13 contests overall (10-1-2, 22 points).

Anaheim’s 17 wins and 37 points are the second-most in the NHL (Chicago is 21-1-3 with 45 points after losing in regulation tonight to Colorado by a score of 6-2).

After signing an eight-year contract extension this morning, Ryan Getzlaf went on to earn his 500th NHL point (assist) as part of a multi-point night (1-1=2). He now has a nine-game point streak at HOME (6-10=16, +9) and a three-game goal streak overall (3-4=7). Getzlaf has earned 7-13=20 points with a +9 rating over the last 12 games. His team-leading 10-19=29 points rank tied for fifth in the NHL.

Viktor Fasth remains perfect at home this season, going 5-0-0 with a .960 SV% (119-of-124) and 0.98 GAA (5 GA/305 MIN). Tonight marked the second shutout of his career (also Feb. 6 at Colorado), stopping all 29 shots he faced.

Anaheim extended its HOME winning streak against Calgary to 16 consecutive games. It is the longest home winning streak vs. one opponent in franchise history. The Ducks have not lost to the Flames at home (regular season) since Jan. 19, 2004. The club is also 16-5-1 vs. the Flames overall dating back to Nov. 29, 2007.

Bobby Ryan extended his point streak to six games (2-5=7) with his fourth multi-point game of the season. It marks his longest point streak since a career-best seven-game streak from Dec. 8-22, 2009 (3-6=9).

Corey Perry has points in three straight (2-2=4) and has earned 6-10=16 points (+9) over the last 11 contests (points in 10 of the 11).

Andrew Cogliano has earned 3-3=6 points with a +6 rating over the last five games.

Tonight’s attendance was 15,839

GAME LOG

3rd Period

20:00 - This one's over, 4-0.

16:18 - ANAHEIM GOAL - Perry is knocked to the ice yet again, to draw a penalty, but the Ducks don't need it. During the delayed whistle, Sbisa slides the puck to Ryan in the slot, who makes a sweet tip in front to Getzlaf. He misses once in the crease, but ultimately drags it over the stripe with the backhand to make it 4-0. This bad boy is over.

14:24 - Ducks kill this one with just one shot on net.

12:24 - ANA Penalty - Ben Lovejoy, 2 min. interference. Lovejoy and Stajan go spilling into the net and knock it off its rocker (as a buddy of mine used to say). We take timeout with 7:36 left and the Ducks leading it 3-0.

9:07 - Bonino goes in all alone after taking the puck from Bouwmeester, but he can't sneak it past Kiprusoff on the stick side.

Loud cheer here as they show the Blackhawks 6-2 loss to Colorado on the board. I was kind of hoping we'd be the first ones to beat them in regulation, but we don't play them until March 20. That would put them waaaay too far ahead.

7:15 - Fasth with a monster stop on a wide-open Glencross from the slot, then Perry goes smashing into the crossbar to slap the flying puck away.

5:00 - Some scariness in front of the Anaheim net the last couple minutes.

2:10 - Etem almost gets his first after Holland's centering pass hits off Kiprusoff and bounces to Etem, but he can't get it through.

0:28 - Perry has absolutely no luck tonight. Taking a ton of hits, and now almost gets hit with the puck, just a split second before taking a skate to the head.

0:00 - Off and running in the third.

2nd Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks with a nice middle session, getting goals from Ryan and Soutay to make it 3-0.

Husband tennis ball going with a jersey over his flourescent sweatshirt tonight. Staying stealth.

15:52 - ANAHEIM GOAL - SHELDON SOURAY - Staubitz gets the puck back to Souray on the left point, and he unleashes a missile that sails through a crowd and gets behind Kiprusoff. Just like that, the Ducks lead it 3-0.
First point of the year for Staubitz.

15:10 - Fowler slaloms up the ice with the puck, starting a tic-tac-toe play that ends with Perry firing just wide. Pretty.

13:38 - ANAHEIM GOAL - BOBBY RYAN - Perry got things started by picking off a pass near the wall. But after he loses it, Getzlaf hustles to chase it down and return it to Perry behind the net. He feeds in front to Ryan for the one-timer, his seventh goal of the year, and Ducks lead it 2-0.
Getzlaf with the second assist for his 500th career point. Third on the Ducks all-time list.

12:00 - Staubitz back out there after taking a skate to the face. That's hockey.

8:50 - Souray with a rocket that's kicked away.

6:30 - Perry has taken some punishment tonight and takes another hard hit into the glass.

6:12 - Fasth with another big stop and we take a timeout.

4:55 - Fasth with a beauty of a kick save on Cammalleri.

0:22 - Kiprusoff makes a blind giveaway behind his net, but recovers in time to rob Ryan (who picked it off) blind and save himself some embarrassment.

0:00 - Here we go in the second.

1st Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks lead it 1-0 on Winnik's early goal, but got outshot 10-4.

17:51 - Fasth with a beautiy of a save on a Cervenka redirect.

17:15 - Puck spends a good length of time in the Ducks end, pinballs around the net, then Fasth makes a big stop and smothers it. In the meantime, Staubitz took a skate to the face and goes to the room.

15:00 - Things getting physical. We'll see what that means later.

14:40 - Ryan out there with Getz and Perry.

13:45 - Koivu to Winnik for the one-timer, but good save by Kiprusoff.

13:25 - We'll try to get an update on Ryan soon.

13:15 - Beleskey tries to feed across to Selanne, but it gets by him.

11:45 - Beleskey now skating with Getzlaf and Perry after Ryan goes off.

11:35 - Cervenka tries to grab a flying puck out of the air in front of the net, misses it, and Fasth gloves it instead.

10:51 - Fasth with a nice glove save on Tanquay.

9:39 - Ryan loses an edge and falls in the corner, and he's coming off pretty gingerly.

6:00 - Fasth splays out to make a couple of huge stops with Stajan right on top of him.

4:55 - Staubitz, fresh out of the box, puts a hit on Cammalleri.

4:05 - Glencross' dump-in takes a weird carom toward Fasth's crease, but he's ready for it and scoops it up.

2:27 - ANA Penalty - Brad Staubitz, 2 min. interference. Staubitz, who had been jawing with Jackman, gives Begin a pretty good shot into the Calgary bench.

1:15 - ANAHEIM GOAL - DANIEL WINNIK - From the right wing, Koivu rings it along the wall to Cogliano behind the net, who quickly redirects it in front to Winnik for the snap shot and the serious fist pump. After opening with five goals in the first four games, that's the first for Winnik since that fourth game (January 26). Hence the fist pump. It's 1-0.

0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.

Pregame
