Ducks Rout Stars 5-2 in Game 2 of Their Miniseries

By Adam Brady
AnaheimDucks.com

ANAHEIM – In the days leading up to today’s NHL trade deadline, the division-rival Ducks and Stars went in significantly different directions. That disparity revealed itself tonight on the ice in a resounding 5-2 victory for Anaheim at Honda Center, their second win in three nights over the Stars.

In the past week, Dallas shipped out franchise standouts Jaromir Jagr, Derek Roy and captain Brenden Morrow, while the Ducks today only added center Matthew Lombardi from Phoenix in exchange for minor leaguer Brandon McMillan. As the deadline loomed this morning, Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said, “I like our team. I like the way our guys act around the dressing room. I like the way they’ve rebounded after a bad week. There’s nothing to say we can’t continue being competitive with anybody.”

The Ducks, owners of the NHL's third-best record, certainly proved that tonight in dominating the Stars from start to finish just two nights after a convincing 4-0 victory in Dallas. Part 3 of the two teams’ three-game miniseries comes Friday night back at Honda Center.

Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf had a goal and two assists, coming back from an apparent injury to score Anaheim’s fourth goal of the game in the third period and helping the Ducks improve their home record to 14-4-0.

The Ducks broke the scoring ice 11:44 into the first when Radek Dvorak (who played last season in Dallas) got his first goal as a Duck in his third game with the club. During a delayed penalty, the Ducks got six attackers on the ice and made it work, as Ryan Getzlaf made a pinpoint feed on the doorstep to Dvorak, who easily finished the job.

Anaheim broke it open in the second on goals by Teemu Selanne and Kyle Palmieri. Selanne struck halfway through the period on a Ducks power play, picking up a loose puck after a Getzlaf pass was knocked down and firing it over goalie Kari Lehtonen’s glove from the circle. It was the 251st power play goal of Selanne’s career, still third on the NHL all-time list.

Five minutes later Palmieri struck, skating hard to the net from the wall and forcing the puck under Lehtonen from inside the crease to make it 3-0.

Dallas got one back 2:48 into the third as Vernon Fiddler fed from behind the net to a charging Erik Cole, who banged it home. That was the first Stars score on Fasth in almost 103 minutes, dating back to Anaheim’s 4-0 victory in Dallas two nights ago.

Five minutes into the third, Getzlaf limped to the locker room after falling awkwardly on his own dropped stick, but came back a few minutes later. He emphatically announced his return later in the period, taking a blind Corey Perry pass on the rush and backhanding the puck over Lehtonen’s shoulder.

Dallas got on back with 1:24 left, as Lane MacDermid received a Ryan Garbutt pass in the circle and wristed it just inside the far post.

But it was too little too late for Dallas, especially after Andrew Cogliano bounced the puck into an empty net with less than four seconds remaining to make it 5-2.

GAME LOG

3rd Period

20:00 - END OF GAME - Ducks polish off the Stars 5-2 and will face them one more time Friday night.

19:56 - ANAHEIM GOAL (EMPTY NET) - ANDREW COGLIANO - The Stars send Lehtonen to the bench and Cogliano fires the puck from their blue line and somehow gets it to bounce into the empty net. It's 5-2 Ducks and WE'RE GOING TO HOOTERS!!!

18:36 - DALLAS GOAL - LANE MACDERMID - Garbutt feeds from behind the extended goal line to MacDermid in the circle and he shuttles it past Fasth to make it 4-2.

18:37 - Getzlaf appears to be done for the night. Question is, does he come out for First Star?

17:00 - Ducks turned away on a couple of chances to get that Hooters goal.

14:05 - Getzlaf may have gone to the room again.

10:30 - ANAHEIM GOAL - RYAN GETZLAF - Perry runs down a sliding puck near the Dallas blue line and flings a blind pass to a charging Getzlaf, who backhands it over Lehtonen's shoulder to make it 4-1. Yeah, Getzlaf is okay.

8:29 - No call as Beleskey takes a high stick from Chiasson, then Fasth saves a Chiasson shot on the rusha and gets run into. Palmieri not pleased and takes a push from Roussel. No penalties on any Stars on the play. Puzzling. Beleskey to the locker room.

7:19 - Getzlaf appears to be just fine, as he puts on a  skating display to undress Goligoski and is just barely denied by a diving Lehtonen. Big save that ruined what would have been a beauty.

6:10 - Koivu misses a chance to score off a nice Winnik pass, as he can't maneuver the puck around an aggressive Lehtonen.

5:03 - Getzlaf back on the bench and talking to the trainer. Looks ready to come back in.

5:03 - Stars threaten to get another on the rush, but Roussel's pass slides across the crease.

2:48 - DALLAS GOAL - ERIK COLE - The Stars get one back when Fiddler plays the puck behind the net and feeds a charging Cole, who bangs it past Fasth. It's 3-1.

2:15 - Ducks get a break when Rome's shot from the point is tipped and it rings the post.

0:30 - Getzlaf loses his stick, and while trying to retrieve it, is taken down by Benn and appears to be hurt. Crowd not loving that there was no call. Getzlaf limps in the bench area and heads to the locker room.

0:00 - Off and running in the third.

2nd Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - It's a good 20 for the Ducks, who get goals from Selanne and Palmieri to make it 3-0.

16:38 - ANAHEIM GOAL - KYLE PALMIERI - With the puck against the wall, Palmieri takes matters into his own hands, crashing the net, getting into the crease and forcing the puck under Lehtonen's left skate. This goal was tailor made for Social Media Night. Scored by @kylepalmieri from @PeterHolland13 and @Matt_Beleskey. #DucksSocial

Flash mob going on in section 416, as a couple hundred people clad in orange t-shirts dance in sync during the timeout. Pretty cool.

11:33 - ANAHEIM GOAL - TEEMU SELANNE - Selanne, who has had a few on the power play in his liftetime, gets another. After Getzlaf's pass is knocked down by a Dallas stick, Selanne picks up the loose change and wrists it over countryman Lehtonen's glove from the right circle. It's 2-0 Ducks.

11:04 - DAL Penalty - Alex Goligoski, 2 min. tripping. Goligoski takes down Cogliano. Ducks almost get another on the delayed penalty, but Lehtonen makes a strong stop on the doorstep after a Souray slap shot.

10:30 - Fasth just does kick away a Garbutt shot. Close one.

7:00 - Goligoski slap shot is just kicked away by Fasth.

Sorry, I'm a little off tonight, handing Social Media Night. I'll get with it.

4:38 - Icing. Stars.

0:00 - Here we go in the second.

1st Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks get a Dvorak goal to lead it 1-0.

19:00 - Dvorak almost gets goal No. 2, taking a shot from in deep that sits in the crease before it's swept away.

11:44 - ANAHEIM GOAL - RADEK DVORAK - During a delayed penalty, the Ducks get six on the ice and make it work. Getzlaf sees Dvorak left open in front of the net and gives him the pinpoint feed, allowing Dvorak to tap it in easily. First goal as a Duck and it's 1-0.

8:06 - Koivu with a shot just wide of the net and Lehtonen's outstretched leg.

Tennis balls getting social on Social Media Night. There are four of them behind the Dallas net.

2:45 - Palmieri fakes a shot, sweeps around the back of the net and almost gets it past Lehtonen. Follow-up shot had a chance too.

1:45 - Etem, skating on the second line with Andrew Cogliano and Selanne tonight, almost tips one in.

0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center on Social Media Night.

Pregame

Fasth in net for the Ducks and Lehtonen (who will hopelly let more than one in) for Dallas.
