Anaheim's Power Play and Penalty Kill Shine in 4-0 Victory in Game 3

DETROIT -- The Ducks took their game to another level in the most one-sided game of the series, as Anaheim's special teams shined in an emphatic 4-0 victory in Game 3 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals.

After erasing consecutive penalties midway through the first period, including a 4-on-3, the Ducks converted twice on the power play and once while shorthanded to take a 2-1 series lead.

Tonight marks the Ducks first PLAYOFF shutout vs. Detroit (home or road). In addition, it's the second shutout AT Detroit in club history including the regular season - the other coming Mar. 30, 1997 (1-0 in OT).

The Ducks took control of the game after Justin Abdelkader was assessed a game misconduct for an illegal on Toni Lydman.

The Ducks scored once on the five-minute power play but controlled play afterward.

Nick Bonino broke a scoreless tie 18 seconds after the penalty to put Anaheim in front at 15:29 of the second period. He backhanded a rebound from the edge of the crease for his second goal of the series.

Seconds after the Red Wings were inches away from tying the score on a power play at one end, a great individual play by Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf made it a two-goal advantage.

Getzlaf poked the puck away from Detroit forward Damien Brunner, then went past goalie Jimmy Howard and put it in the open net for a shorthanded goal at 6:33 of the third period. It was Getzlaf's second career playoff shorthanded goal - also Apr. 13, 2007 vs MIN in game 2 of CQF.

Rookie Emerson Etem, who created multiple chances earlier in the game, finished a pretty pass from Teemu Selanne to make it 3-0 at 8:04 of the period. It was the first career playoff goal for the Southern California native.

Matt Beleskey had a power-play goal with 6:26 remaining to finish the scoring.

One day after the Ducks coach and a few players talked about needing to stay out of the penalty box, Anaheim had four guys take up residency there in the opening period. The penalty killers kept Detroit off the scoreboard, limiting the Red Wings to two shots on goal despite being shorthanded for 5:20, including an 80-second 4-on-3 and a 40-second 5-on-3 situation.

"Our penalty kill did a great job tonight," Getzlaf told NBC Sports Network. "We took a lot of penalties in the start of that game, and they gave us a chance to stay in, as well as our goaltender."

The Red Wings returned the favor by taking a pair of penalties. Anaheim had 37 seconds of 5-on-3 time to work with, but Howard made the key save on a one-timer from Teemu Selanne from about the same spot he scored from in Game 1.

Before the parade to the penalty box, the Ducks controlled play at even strength and limited the Red Wings' chances in the opening minutes. Howard made 13 saves in the first period, including nine at even strength, and left a scrum at the end of the 20 minutes without his helmet but with the standing-room crowd chanting his name.

By the waning moments of the third period, most of those fans had exited this old barn, disappointed and hoping to avoid the extra traffic because of a Taylor Swift concert across the city at Ford Field.
