Ducks Edge League-leading Blackhawks, 3-2 in Shootout

CHICAGO -- The Anaheim Ducks went to a third straight shootout, and this time they made sure it didn't last very long Friday night at United Center.

Nick Bonino and Kyle Palmieri scored goals in the shootout and earned the Ducks the extra point in a 3-2 victory against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Bonino and Palmieri beat Chicago rookie goalie Antti Raanta, and Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller turned away attempts by Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane.

The Ducks ended a two-game winless skid, in which they lost a pair of shootouts, including a nine-rounder to the Los Angeles Kings at Honda Center on Tuesday.

"It's just a point in the end, but it's still winning and losing, and winning is definitely more fun," said Hiller. "It was nice to have the guys score a couple up front in the shootout, and it was nice to finally win the shootout."

The Blackhawks are winless in three straight games for the first time this season, but came inches away from erasing their losing streak if not for a highlight-reel save from Hiller stopping Toews on the doorstep in overtime.

"I thought the best one was in OT, on the back door," Hiller said of the save. "I thought I had a few good saves there. I wasn't happy with the first goal, but I felt I played a pretty solid period and I think everybody was working hard. That's why, in the end, we deserved to win."

Anaheim is searching for some secondary scoring, but as long as they keep earning points off their top line's production, they'll take it. Hiller (23 saves) was strong in net, and the top line of Dustin Penner, Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry led the way offensively.

Getzlaf had a goal and assist, Perry scored his 17th goal, and Penner picked up a secondary assist before ending his night late in the third when he was assessed a 10-minute misconduct for shooting a puck after a play was blown dead.

Penner increased his point streak to six games (5g/3a), matching his career high. He also did so Mar. 5-15, 2011 with LA.

His linemate Getzlaf is now riding a 10-game point streak - the longest current streak in the league. He also has points in the last 12 games he has played in (missed three due to injury) - his longest since a career-high 15-game point streak from Dec. 22, 2007 - Jan. 23, 2008.

The Ducks nearly won in overtime when Mark Fistric tapped home a rebound at the side of the net. The goal was immediately waived off by referee Kevin Pollock because goalie Antti Raanta was bowled over in the crease. Replays showed Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook cross-checked Saku Koivu into Raanta as a shot from the point was launched.

Hiller had to make a great sprawling save off a rebound against Brandon Bollig 1:50 into the game to keep it scoreless, but it didn't stay that way much longer.

After Perry lost his stick in front of the net, he picked it up and tipped a wrister by Getzlaf from the left circle past Raanta at 3:20 for a 1-0 lead. Ben Smith tied it 1-1, 45 seconds later with a wrister from the top of the right circle that skipped between Hiller's pads.

The tie wasn't broken until Chicago's season-long issues on the penalty kill cropped up at 10:05 of the second period, when Getzlaf fired a long shot from above the right circle that trickled through Raanta's pads with one second left on a power play.

Getzlaf's goal, scored during Anaheim's first man-advantage, was the fourth time in as many games Chicago has allowed at least one power-play goal. It was the 24th power-play goal they allowed in 85 chances, after giving up 18 through the entire 48-game schedule last season.

Kris Versteeg's power-play goal made up for it with 2:12 left in the second period. His second goal in 12 games since coming to Chicago in a trade with the Florida Panthers tied it 2-2. After his initial shot was blocked in front of the net, the puck came right back and Versteeg buried the rebound with a wrister from the low slot.
