Ducks Drop Six on Panthers in Convincing Victory at Honda Center

By Adam Brady

ANAHEIM – The Ducks put together one of their patented offensive onslaughts to break out of a mini slump at Honda Center.

Anaheim piled up six goals by six different players against the visiting Florida Panthers for a convincing 6-2 victory in front of an eighth straight sellout crowd of 17,281. The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Ducks and a four-game winless stretch at Honda Center, as Anaheim climbed to within a point of San Jose for the Pacific Division lead.

For the Ducks, it was the 20th game this season with five goals or more, which included captain Ryan Getzlaf’s 30th of the season and 600th point (third on the franchise’s all-time list). It was also Getzlaf’s eighth 3-point game this season, trailing only Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby for the NHL lead.

"It was big," Getzlaf said of the win. "These are the tough games, when you’re playing teams in the East that you don’t see very often. Our guys did a great job rebounding after that timeout. We played the way we wanted to."

The Ducks raced out to a 3-0 lead and hardly looked back, thanks to a first-period strike by Patrick Maroon and second-period tallies from Teemu Selanne and Jakob Silfverberg.

Maroon got a struggling Ducks power play going when he took in a Ryan Getzlaf feed near the crease and deposited it eight minutes into the game. (Maroon suffered a lower body injury in the second period and did not return.)

Just 15 seconds into the middle session, Selanne received a feed from Corey Perry on the rush and one-timed it past former Ducks goalie Dan Ellis from the slot.

Then less than four minutes later, with the Ducks on the penalty kill, Silfverberg picked off the puck and headed on a breakaway, deking to the backhand before shuttling it past Ellis.

"Today we were really clicking and reading each other well," said Selanne, who spent another game on the top line with Getzlaf and Perry. "The more time we spend together, the more you’re going to learn from one another. It was fun to play with those guys. They’re so dangerous and talented, so you have to be ready."

Florida got one back eight minutes into the second, when Krys Barch sent a shot on net from the top of the right wing circle, and it was tipped through by a screening Jimmy Hayes.

The Panthers made it a one-goal game at the exact mid-point of the second, as Vincent Trocheck swept around the net and fed across the crease to Tomas Fleischmann, who tapped it in.

Anaheim took a timeout after that goal and it seemed to pay off. Less than a minute later, Mathieu Perreault tapped the puck to Kyle Palmieri from just outside the crease (taking a high stick in the process) and Palmieri sent it into the open net.

Then one minute later, Corey Perry went hard to the net and was denied by Ellis, but he punched in the rebound from his knees for his 37th of the year.

Getzlaf got his 30th of the season 6:32 into the third on a gorgeous give-and-go with Selanne that was capped by Getzlaf slinging it through from the slot.

"Tonight, things were clicking better," Getzlaf said. "We played with the puck more and that was the big thing. The biggest thing for me, when I have Teemu on my line, is I want to get him the puck all the time instead of holding on to it a little bit at first."

The Ducks head out of town later this week for three games in Canada, against the Flames, Oilers and Canucks.

"If we keep playing, it’s not going to be over until Game 82," Perry said. "We know as a group how good we can be. If we play the style we have to play to be successful, we’re going to be all right. We just need to keep pushing forward."
