Unlike last season, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks keep losing the close ones.
They will try to reverse that trend when they host the Carolina Hurricanes in their final game before the All-Star break.
The Ducks led the NHL by winning 25 one-goal games during an improbable run to the Stanley Cup finals last season. They are 8-13 in one-goal games thus far this season and have lost a league-high seven games in overtime, including Monday's 2-1 defeat at Edmonton.
Trailing first-place San Jose by 17 points in the Pacific Division and sitting 12 points out of the final postseason spot in the Western Conference, the Ducks know they can ill-afford to continue losing winnable games.
"We have to win Wednesday against Carolina," Anaheim's Petr Sykora told the Los Angeles Times. "Then we have to come out of the break and get on a roll, win six or seven games in row. That's what it is going to take to catch up.
"Last season, we had a stretch where we won 20 of 30 games. This team is capable of doing that. It's our only chance."
The Hurricanes' scoring woes continued in Tuesday's 3-1 loss at Colorado. Carolina peppered Avalanche goalie David Aebischer with 17 first-period shots, but none went through as the league's lowest-scoring team settled for just its 103rd goal of the season, scored by Pavel Brendl at the end of the second period.
The Hurricanes have managed just one win in their last six games (1-4-1).
Carolina was without forward Marty Murray, who flew back to North Carolina for the birth of his first child.
