GAME: Edmonton Oilers (25-26-10-1) at Anaheim Mighty Ducks (21-25-9-8).
TIME: Wednesday, 10:30 p.m. EST.
Desperate for points, the Edmonton Oilers should be happy to see the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
Edmonton will try to record its eighth straight win against the Mighty Ducks when the teams meet at the Arrowhead Pond.
The Oilers have won all three meetings with the Mighty Ducks this season, allowing just three goals. Edmonton has not lost in the series since a 2-0 defeat at Anaheim on April 5, 2002.
Although Edmonton has played better of late with a 5-2-2 record this month, it is still 10th in the West with 20 games remaining. Anaheim has even more ground to make up if it plans to defend its Western Conference championship. The Mighty Ducks are in 12th place, trailing the final playoff spot by double digits.
Another strong performance from Tommy Salo and a first-period goal by Jason Chimera helped the Oilers skate to a 1-1 tie against visiting Detroit on Monday.
"It is a pretty good building block for our team to come in in a big-game situation and hold Detroit to one goal," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said.
With Ty Conklin sidelined with a fractured right hand, Salo figures to make his sixth straight start Wednesday. Salo is 2-1-2 in his last five starts, allowing just nine goals.
The Oilers have reason to be confident heading into this trip after posting a 2-0-1 record against Colorado, Vancouver and Detroit - three of the league's top teams.
MacTavish knows his team is running out of time to make a playoff run.
"It's going to come - we all believe it," MacTavish said. "But it's got to come in a hurry."
Anaheim appeared poised to make a push for the playoffs after winning five of six earlier this month, but is winless in its last three (0-1-1-1).
Jason Krog scored in the second period and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 37 shots in Anaheim's 1-1 tie at Phoenix on Monday.
Giguere rebounded with a strong performance after allowing four goals on 29 shots in Sunday's 4-0 loss at Dallas.
"I felt much better tonight than yesterday," Giguere said. "With back-to-back games, if you get plenty of rest and hydrate yourself, you're young enough you should be able to do it."
Ducks center Sergei Fedorov has failed to record a point during his team's current three-game skid after he had three goals and five assists in Anaheim's previous six contests.
