Mighty Ducks-Flames Preview
Anaheim Ducks vs. Calgary Flames

GAME: Anaheim Mighty Ducks (43-27-12) at Calgary Flames (46-25-11).

PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference quarterfinals; Game 2; Flames lead, 1-0.

TIME: Sunday, 9 p.m. EDT.

With Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere's health still an issue, the Mighty Ducks will try to even their Western Conference Quarterfinal series against the Calgary Flames on Sunday at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Giguere, the former Conn Smythe Trophy winner who led the Ducks to the Stanley Cup finals in 2003, suited up before Game 1 on Friday but was unable to play due to a lower-body injury suffered during practice a couple days before.

Giguere, who is day-to-day, last played Monday when he made 29 saves in a 4-3 win over the Flames in the regular-season finale to reach 30 wins for the second time in his career.

"You guys have heard it so many times I'm sure you're sick of it," coach Randy Carlyle said of Giguere, who could only watch as the Flames opened the series with a 2-1 overtime win, snapping a streak of eight straight losses in playoff openers that began in 1988-89 when Calgary won its only Stanley Cup.

Tony Amonte scored the game's first goal at 6:17 of the second period to give the Flames the lead before the Ducks' Jeff Friesen netted the equalizer at 5:17 of the third, which set the stage for Darren McCarty in overtime.

McCarty, a gritty 12-year veteran who won three Stanley Cups with Detroit, scored his 21st career playoff goal with a one-timer past fill-in Ilya Bryzgalov.

McCarty entered with just two goals in his last 23 games and had seven overall during the regular season.

"The best thing about the playoffs is a lot of the times, different guys get to step up and share the limelight for a night," said McCarty, the Flames' leader in penalty minutes in 2005-06 with 117. "Your studs and your top guys are going to usually get it as they deserve it most of the time. But it's nice to chip in when you can."

Bryzgalov, making the first postseason start of his career and just his second in 15 games dating to the regular season, finished with 28 saves.

"I was so excited, because I wait for this chance for five years," said Bryzgalov. "Everyone wants to play in the playoffs because it's a good occasion to learn something new. It's pretty tough. I think it's made me a better goalie. I'm not nervous. I feel pretty cool."

Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff made several tough saves through the first two periods, including one on Ducks leading scorer Teemu Selanne on a breakaway two minutes into the second for one of his 33 saves.

"Without Kiprusoff, this game should be over after two periods," Selanne said.

Kiprusoff has allowed three goals or less in 24 of 29 career postseason starts.

The Flames are 11-2 all time in playoff series in which they won the opener and 7-0 when they went up two games to none.
