GAME: Calgary Flames at Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference quarterfinals; tied 1-1.
TIME: Tuesday, 10 p.m. EDT.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere was back in net for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks in their Game 2 victory over the Calgary Flames, meaning two of the top goaltenders in recent playoff history are expected to meet again when the first-round series shifts to the Arrowhead Pond for Game 3.
Giguere sat out with a lower-body injury as the Ducks lost the series opener to the Flames and his counterpart, Miikka Kiprusoff, 2-1 in overtime Friday. Giguere, though, returned and made 22 saves Sunday, including a stop on Calgary's Matthew Lombardi with 2 seconds remaining in a 4-3 win.
"It's a big win for us to go back with a 1-1 tie," Giguere said. "The Flames are not going to give us anything for free and we're not going to give them anything for free. It will be a hard battle all the way to the end and most of the games are going to be pretty tight. That's the way we should expect them."
Among this season's playoff goalies with previous postseason experience, Giguere is first with a .943 save percentage. He posted a .945 mark in leading Anaheim to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup finals and earning playoff MVP honors in 2003.
Kiprusoff has the second-best save percentage in the playoffs at .928, a number achieved largely on the strength of his 2004 postseason, when he recorded a .928 percentage in sparking Calgary to the Cup finals. The Flames also reached Game 7 before losing.
Anaheim jumped out to a 3-0 lead Sunday on goals from Chris Kunitz, Scott Niedermayer and Joffrey Lupul, but Calgary pulled to within one after two periods on a short-handed score from Jarome Iginla and a power-play goal by Kristian Huselius.
Samuel Pahlsson's goal at 7:55 of the third proved to be the winner as Calgary's Dion Phaneuf scored with 4:29 remaining.
"They were more desperate than us off the start and we didn't match it," Iginla said. "It was that first period where we were very flat and they were good. They got out ahead of us and we didn't fully get back into it."
For the first time in its eight playoff series, Anaheim will play Game 3 with the series tied. The Ducks have led 2-0 four times and gone on to win each time, and lost the three series in which they trailed 0-2.
The Flames squandered a chance go up two games to none, which they have done only seven times in 36 previous playoff series. Calgary was unable to make it two straight wins after Darren McCarty scored 9:45 into overtime Friday to give the Flames the series lead.
Kiprusoff stopped 33 shots Friday, including all 24 he faced in the first two periods, but he wasn't as dependable Sunday. He made just 16 saves and allowed four goals for the first time in 38 games, dating to a 4-3 overtime loss at Vancouver on Jan. 8.
Giguere stopped 11 shots in the third Sunday to prevent Calgary from completing the comeback.
The Flames have one win in their last 13 visits to Arrowhead Pond.
