GAME: Calgary Flames at Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
PLAYOFF SERIES: Western Conference quarterfinals; Flames lead 3-2.
TIME: Monday, 11 p.m. EDT.
The Calgary Flames were one win short of taking home the Stanley Cup in 2004, but captain Jarome Iginla is doing his best to make sure they get another chance this season.
The Flames try to eliminate the Anaheim Mighty Ducks as the teams meet at Arrowhead Pond for Game 6 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
Iginla scored twice Saturday as the Flames took a three-goal lead and held on for a 3-2 win over the Mighty Ducks in Game 5. The Flames captain has four goals in the last two games and five goals and three assists in the series.
"Everybody in our room, me included, was pumped for this game and knew the importance," said Iginla, who has led the Flames in scoring the last five seasons.
Tony Amonte got the crucial first goal, a short-handed tally 5:49 into the first period. The team that has scored first has won all five games in the series.
Iginla scored on the power play later in the opening period and added another just 1:03 into the second to give Calgary a 3-0 lead and chase Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
"Again tonight he shows us the way and has another huge game for us," said Flames center Matthew Lombardi of Iginla. "As a team we feed off him real well and the energy he brings. He's such a good leader."
The Flames needed their leader in the final 20 minutes as they took six penalties, resulting in two Anaheim power-play goals by Andy McDonald and Rob Niedermayer. Calgary goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff came up big again, however, making 26 saves to preserve the win.
Kiprusoff improved to 19-13-0-1 for his career in the postseason with a 1.92 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage.
While Kiprusoff was strong between the pipes, Giguere allowed three goals on eight shots before being pulled for Ilya Bryzgalov, who made 19 saves.
"This is just a bump in the road," Giguere said. "In the playoffs you go through all kinds of emotions, all kinds of scenarios. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they're bad, but at the end of the day, they're all good experiences and you'll learn from them and make you better."
Giguere was much better during the regular season when he posted a 2.66 GAA and a .911 save percentage. Those numbers have jumped to a 3.87 GAA and an .845 save percentage in the postseason.
Giguere won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2003, when he led the Mighty Ducks to the Stanley Cup finals where they lost in seven games to the New Jersey Devils. Anaheim missed the playoffs last season and is on the verge of its second first-round exit in four playoff appearances.
Anaheim has won 10 of its last 12 postseason games at Arrowhead Pond, however, and posted a 26-10-5 record there during the regular season.
Game 7, if necessary, will be Wednesday in Calgary.
