Ducks Look to Take Commanding 3-1 Series Lead
Anaheim Ducks vs. Detroit Red Wings

(Anaheim leads best-of-7 series, 2-1)

Big story: The Anaheim Ducks, who have scored seven of the past eight goals in this series, can take a commanding 3-1 series lead tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

Team scope:

Ducks: Anaheim has won the special teams battle in Games 1 and 3, and not surprisingly, those are the contests the Ducks have won. They scored twice on the power play in both games, and captain Ryan Getzlaf had a game-changing shorthanded tally to make it a 2-0 lead in Game 3.

Even though they did score four times in the final 26 minutes, the Ducks’ most important work in Game 3 may have come in the opening period. Detroit’s power play was unable to break a scoreless tie despite a lengthy 4-on-3 and 40 seconds of 5-on-3 time. After yielding three straight extra-man goals in Game 2, the Ducks’ PK had a big start and it helped the team to an even bigger finish.

Red Wings: Detroit will be without forward Justin Abdelkader for the next two games due to a suspension.

The Detroit players feel they are not making life hard enough on Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller. Coach Mike Babcock said Sunday he’s glad to hear that, because that’s what he’s been telling his troops. Red Wings forward Danny Cleary said Hiller “had the night off” in Game 3.

The Wings had only 23 shots on net, and few were from in tight or second-chance opportunities. They had chances on the power play, but Babcock said they were “trying to pass the puck into the net.” One issue is the Wings were not generating a lot at even strength, as the Ducks’ speed and defensive structure prevailed.

Who’s hot: Nick Bonino has six points in his past seven games for the Ducks -- all of which have come since missing six weeks with an injury. Johan Franzen had seven goals in the final eight games of the regular season and has two through the first three postseason contests.

Injury report: The Ducks are likely to be without defenseman Toni Lydman, who left Game 3 after the big hit by Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader. Veteran Sheldon Souray will likely take Lydman’s place in the lineup after being a healthy scratch in Game 2. The Red Wings are without a couple of key players in center Darren Helm and defenseman Danny DeKeyser, who was lost for the rest of the postseason in Game 2 because of a broken thumb.
