CANUCKS (11-6-2) at DUCKS (14-3-1)
TV: SNET-P; PRIME
Last 10: Vancouver 6-3-1; Anaheim 7-2-1
Season series: New Pacific Division rivals, Anaheim and Vancouver face each other for the first time this season. It marks the opening of a five-game season series between the two clubs with three contests taking place at Honda Center (also Jan. 5 & 15) and two at Rogers Arena (Mar. 29 & Apr. 7). Anaheim went 2-1-0 in last year’s three-game series, and most recently recorded a 3-1 win on Apr. 25 at Rogers Arena. The season series in 2012-13 also included a 7-3 victory on Jan. 19 at Rogers Arena, the most goals scored to start a season in club history. Anaheim is 32-35-15 all-time vs. Vancouver, including a 14-15-11 mark at Honda Center.
Big story: The NHL-leading Ducks enter the game on a four-game winning streak, tied for the longest active streak in the NHL (also WSH), and have a standings point streak of eight consecutive games (7-0-1), also the longest current streak in the NHL (league-high this season is nine games by San Jose from Oct. 3-21 (8-0-1)). In addition, the Ducks are riding an active seven-game home winning streak, which marks the most consecutive home wins to start a season in franchise history. The Ducks are also the only NHL club with a perfect home record this season. The last NHL team to go 7-0-0 at home to start a season was Los Angeles in 2010-11 (8-0-0). At Honda Center, Anaheim has outscored the opposition 32-12 (excluding one shootout goal), resulting in the team's longest home win streak since a 13-gamer from Jan. 26-Mar. 20, 2013.
Ducks: So is there room for improvement by a team that yet to lose at home and has more victories than anyone in the league? Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau certainly thinks so.
"We can be a lot better,” Boudreau said Saturday. “We showed 14 clips this morning of us not doing the right things in our own zone."
The Ducks did few things wrong Friday against the Sabres. Ryan Getzlaf completed his first NHL hat trick before the first period was over, and Frederik Andersen had little trouble winning for the fifth time in as many NHL appearances.
"We wanted to come out in the first period and really attack them," Boudreau said. "We wanted to get a lead, knowing that they might not play as hard on the last game of a road trip, and that's exactly what we did. We had 22 shots in the first period, and I think we solidified the win."
Canucks: Vancouver trailed 2-0 after one period in Los Angeles and got within a goal before a host of turnovers, giveaways and defensive problems proved to be too much. The Canucks allowed the Kings to score three goals in a span of 2:33 to turn a 2-1 game into a rout.
"We had surges in the first two periods," said coach John Tortorella, who gave the Sedin twins only two shifts in the third period. "We just couldn't score. [Kings goaltender Jonathan] Quick made some important saves at key times."
Who's hot: Getzlaf has nine points (6g/3a) in Anaheim's past four games, all victories, and has 13 points (7g/6a) with a +10 rating in his last eight games. ... Defenseman Dan Hamhuis had Vancouver's lone goal against the Kings and has scored in three of the Canucks' past four games.
Injury report: Anaheim is missing center Saku Koivu (head), forwards Jakob Silfverberg (broken hand) and Matt Beleskey (finger), defenseman Sheldon Souray (wrist) and goaltender Viktor Fasth (lower body). ... Vancouver is still without forwards Dale Weise (lower body), Jannik Hansen (upper body) and Jordan Schroeder (ankle surgery).
