CALGARY, Alberta (AP) _ With their recent collapse against Chicago still fresh in their minds, the Calgary Flames were determined not to let a lead slip away again.
Chris Clark had his first career two-goal game Sunday and the Flames held on for a 6-4 win over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
``We were ahead last game against Chicago too so we knew what we didn't want to do and that was let up,'' Clark said about Friday's 5-3 loss after the Flames blew a two-goal lead. ``We knew we had to keep the hammer down, keep pushing ahead, don't let up at any point.''
Calgary moved back into playoff position in the Western Conference, jumping past the St. Louis Blues and into a tie for seventh with the Los Angeles Kings, who are in Calgary on Tuesday.
``Every team that we wanted to lose last night won and that pushed us right out of the playoff picture,'' Clark said. ``It wasn't fun looking at the standings this morning so that makes this game even bigger.''
Anaheim outshot Calgary 24-22, but neither starting goaltender Martin Gerber (five saves on eight shots), nor his replacement Jean-Sebastien Giguere (11 saves on 14 shots) could shut down the Flames.
``The bottom line is when you score four goals, you have to win the hockey game,'' said Ducks coach Mike Babcock. ``We have to find a way to tighten up defensively because you can't give up six goals and win in this league.''
Martin Gelinas, Craig Conroy, Shean Donovan, and Dean McAmmond also scored for the Flames, who won at home for just the third time in 10 games.
Sergei Fedorov had a goal and three assists to lead Anaheim. The Ducks also got goals from Petr Sykora, Vitaly Vishnevski, and Vaclav Prospal.
``We just gave them far too much room, far too much time with the puck, and as a result, they capitalized on their chances,'' Ducks defenseman Keith Carney said. ``That's how it's gone all season for us, we've been very inconsistent.''
Ending a string of eight consecutive starts by Roman Turek, Jamie McLennan returned to the nets for Calgary. Although the goal he gave up to Vishnevski was a soft one, his return seemed to provide the spark the Flames were looking for as they matched a season high for goals in a game. McLennan made 20 saves.
``It was just a coincidence and it's too bad for Roman,'' Clark said. ``We try to play as hard for Roman as for anybody else but it seems that's just the way the puck bounces sometimes.''
The goals came early and often in a rare afternoon game in Calgary with four goals scored in the first 12 minutes.
Clark scored his second on a power play at 5:07 of the second period to give Calgary a 4-2 lead. Donovan scored his 17th of the season in the second period. His previous career high in a season was 13.
