ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - If Ilya Bryzgalov hadn't made a miraculous save against Brendan Shanahan in the first period, Teemu Selanne's third-period goal might not have even mattered to the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
``The save Bryzgalov made on Shanahan was the game-saver because it turned the tide and allowed us to recoup,'' coach Randy Carlyle said after the Mighty Ducks beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Friday. ``You could feel it on the bench. Everybody was basically going, `Oh, no, it's in the net,' and then he pulls the thing out of the air.''
Shanahan had a golden opportunity to break a scoreless tie at 10:10 of the opening period after getting a perfect pass from Pavel Datsyuk at the right of the crease with Bryzgalov way out of position. Shanahan tried to lift the puck despite facing a wide-open net, giving Bryzgalov time to dive across and glove it at the last instant.
``If I just put it along the ice, it probably would have gone in,'' Shanahan said. ``But I thought to myself, `You better get it in the air, just in case a stick comes across.' So I tried to get it in the air, and his glove came across in desperation. I couldn't have put in his glove any cleaner. He had a big smile on his face. He knew that he was lucky on that one.''
Andy McDonald scored Anaheim's first goal about five minutes later, and Selanne got the winner during a power play on a rebound with 10:34 left.
Detroit spent the final 1:22 on a power play after Anaheim defenseman Ruslan Salei was sent off for slashing Mikael Samuelsson, but Ducks rookie Jonathan Hedstrom scored into an empty net with 16 seconds remaining. It was the first time in eight games that Anaheim scored more than two goals.
Henrik Zetterberg's power-play goal in the second period was all the Red Wings could muster on 28 shots as they began a three-game swing through California with their fourth straight road loss.
Detroit is 1-1 since defenseman Jiri Fischer's seizure on the bench on Monday night, including a 7-3 win over archrival Colorado on Wednesday at Joe Louis Arena that ended a four-game losing streak.
``You don't have to wait for something like this to happen to have perspective,'' Shanahan said. ``It's a reminder, but we're not going to try to turn it into a sports cliche.''
Detroit goaltender Manny Legace sprained his knee with two minutes left in the first period, kicking out his left leg on a shot along the ice by Samuel Pahlsson as the Ducks center tried for the far corner of the net. Play continued for another 30 seconds, and Legace stopped point-blank shots from McDonald and Francois Beauchemin while still on his knees in obvious pain before the whistle blew.
Trainers came out on the ice and worked for several minutes on Legace, who kept flexing his legs in the crease until he felt secure enough to continue. He made two more saves and finished the period, but Chris Osgood replaced him at the start of the second with the Red Wings trailing 1-0. Osgood stopped 17 of 18 shots.
The game was Detroit coach Mike Babcock's first in Anaheim since leaving the Ducks after two seasons. He guided them to the Stanley Cup finals in 2003, but Anaheim missed the playoffs in 2004. Babcock signed a three-year deal with the Red Wings in mid-July after new Ducks general manager Brian Burke offered him a one-year deal to stay.
``I always check out the flags when I look up during the national anthem, and there's a banner there - I wish it said `Stanley Cup Champions,' but it doesn't. It just says, `Western Conference Champions,''' Babcock said. ``I enjoyed my time here, but I'm happy to be in Detroit.''
Notes: Detroit's home game last Monday against Nashville, halted with 7 1/2 minutes left in the first period after Fischer's seizure, was rescheduled for April 16. ... Osgood turns 33 on Saturday. ... Detroit LW Tomas Holmstrom has no goals in seven games following a four-game stretch in which he scored seven times.
