DALLAS (AP) - The Stars spared goaltender Marty Turco from an embarrassing defeat.
Dallas rallied from a three-goal deficit to force overtime, then Antti Miettinen scored in the fourth round of the shootout to send the Stars to a 4-3 victory over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Friday night.
Turco, who on Thursday signed a four-year, $22.8 million contract extension through the 2009-10 season, gave up three goals on Anaheim's first six shots and was lifted before the second period.
"For Marty, you work a lifetime for a contract like this," Stars defenseman Philippe Boucher said. "Marty's bailed us out so many times this year. It was the least we could do, to work hard and get this game."
Johan Hedberg, playing in only his eighth game this season, was sharp in relief, stopping all 16 shots he faced in the final two periods and overtime. He then denied three of four attempts in the shootout.
"(Hedberg) is such a character person," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "He understands that this is his job and he got the job done. He was outstanding."
After both teams missed in the first round of the shootout, Jussi Jokinen connected in the second for Dallas - Jokinen's fourth shootout conversion in as many attempts. Anaheim's Andy McDonald matched that goal in the third and final regulation round.
Dallas' Mike Modano missed to force an extra round. Teemu Selanne then was denied on a sliding save by Hedberg, opening the door for Miettinen, who gave the Stars the extra point when he beat Jean-Sebastien Giguere.
The Stars are unbeaten in four shootouts. The Mighty Ducks are 1-4.
Brenden Morrow scored two regulation goals for the Stars, one short-handed, and Miettinen also had a goal.
Selanne had a power-play goal and an assist. McDonald added a power-play goal, and Samuel Pahlsson also scored for Anaheim, which has lost all four meetings with Dallas this season.
"It's unacceptable," Giguere said of his team's overall effort. "We had a great first period, I thought, and we just let them come back in the game and we can't do that. ... We were all guilty of letting up in the game. If we want to be a contender, we can't do that."
Anaheim carried a 3-1 lead into the third period.
Morrow cut the deficit to 3-2 at 1:35 while the Stars were on the penalty-kill, stealing the puck at center ice and scoring on a breakaway that glanced off the post. He tied it with his 13th goal of the season on a rebound at 13:36.
"(The short-handed goal) didn't really go where I wanted it to go but it found a hole," Morrow said. "It kind of got the momentum going a little bit."
Stars right winger Bill Guerin was sent to the locker room 53 seconds after the opening faceoff when he received a game misconduct resulting from an altercation with Anaheim's Zenon Konopka and Todd Fedoruk. Guerin also received a regular misconduct, a fighting major and a minor for instigating. Fedoruk got a double-minor for roughing, and Konopka was given a roughing minor.
Anaheim capitalized on the ensuing power play when McDonald notched his 13th goal at 5:35.
Pahlsson beat Turco on a slap shot from beyond the right circle at 7:00 of the first period to extend Anaheim's lead to 2-0.
Selanne added his 19th goal on a power-play rebound at 14:00 to make it 3-0.
"It's disappointing for my teammates, who rely heavily on me, to spot some goals like that. There's no excuses," Turco said.
Miettinen scored on a breakaway at 3:54 of the second period for Dallas' first goal.
Notes: Dallas' Sergei Zubov assisted on Morrow's second goal, giving him 413 points during his Stars career. That pulled him into a tie with Craig Hartsburg for the most points by a defenseman in franchise history. ... Anaheim forward Rob Niedermayer is out due to a concussion. ... Boucher was back in the Dallas lineup after missing six games because of broken finger on his left hand.
