ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Despite all that heavy goaltender equipment, the Edmonton Oilers got under the skin of Anaheim's Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

The Oilers capitalized on 16 minutes in penalties against the frustrated Giguere to beat the Ducks 5-3 Wednesday night, as Chris Pronger broke open a tie game with a pair of power-play goals 47 seconds apart in the third period.

"I was really upset, for more than one reason," Giguere said. "It's unacceptable. I can't react like that. Unfortunately, a goalie can't go out there and try to bodycheck somebody. You've got to keep your cool. For what I did, I feel sorry to my teammates. It's not right."

Ales Horcoff had an empty-net goal and two assists. Marc-Andre Bergeron, Steve Staios, Ales Hemsky also scored for the Oilers, who have won five of their last six games at the Pond. They are 9-1-4 in their last 14 road games, including three shootout losses and one in overtime.

The game was tied at 3 when Anaheim defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski received a five-minute boarding penalty and automatic game misconduct for checking Jarret Stoll headfirst into the boards with 11:20 left in the game. A cross-checking penalty against Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer gave Edmonton a two-man advantage, and Pronger scored the go-ahead goal with 9:43 to play.

Giguere, who thought he was interfered with by left wing Ryan Smyth, immediately stormed out of his crease to go after him and socked Smyth a couple of times on the back of the head to earn a roughing penalty.

"He did a little bit of obstruction on me, but it's just the way he did it - a little bit sneaky - and I don't appreciate that," said Giguere, who has 64 penalty minutes in 240 regular-season games with the Ducks. "It's just one of those things that really gets me going when a guy does it.

"I don't think there's any room for that in this game. It's pretty much between me and Smitty. I'm sure if you go ask him, he'll probably be man enough to tell you what he did."

Just 28 seconds later, Giguere got a tripping penalty and compounded the problem by whacking Smyth again in the face with his glove for an additional roughing penalty. A 10-minute misconduct was added.

"Initially, maybe I wasn't surprised at his reaction," Smyth said. "But then the next one I thought, `What is he thinking?' I was just trying to create a little bit of havoc in front of the net. Obviously, that's my job. I drew him into another penalty, he got a little frustrated and we capitalized with another goal."

Pronger made it 5-3 with his 100th NHL goal and sixth of the season, a one-timer from 50 feet during another two-man advantage with 8:56 remaining. Horcoff scored into an empty net with 57 seconds left, capping a third period in which Edmonton outshot Anaheim 13-2.

Teemu Selanne scored twice and Chris Kunitz had a power play goal for the Ducks, who trail the Oilers by six points in the race for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff berth with two games in hand. The teams will meet two more times, both in Edmonton, where Anaheim has lost 10 straight times.

"I've never seen a guy implode like that at this level, especially in a game so meaningful to his team," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said of Giguere. "It was very selfish of him."

Giguere and the Ducks were already in a foul mood when they went back to the dressing room for the second intermission, after the Oilers narrowed the gap to 3-2 with 2.1 seconds on the clock.

Giguere left a long rebound off his blocker pad after stopping Jason Smith's slap shot from the top of the right circle. The puck caromed all the way out to Staios, whose one-timer from a few feet inside the blue line beat Giguere through a screen into the top left corner of the net.

"It didn't help us, obviously, because it gave them a little bit of energy," Giguere said. "But we were still in control of the game at that point. Even after they scored their third goal, we were in a position to win."

The Oilers tied it at 3 on their first shot of the third period, as Hemsky beat Giguere high to the glove side at the 3:42 mark with a 20-foot wrist shot at the end of a 2-on-1 break for his 15th goal.

Notes: Giguere had four penalty minutes through Anaheim's first 47 games this season. ... Selanne is six points shy of 1,000 for his NHL career. The nine-time All-Star has scored 39 goals in 56 career games against Edmonton. ... Edmonton goalie Jussi Markkanen made 19 saves. He is 5-0 with two shutouts against the Ducks, including a 2-0 victory in his NHL debut on Nov. 28, 2000 at Anaheim. ... The Oilers scored three power play goals to beat Anaheim 4-2 in the Ducks' home opener.
