GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Rob Niedermayer's scoring slump ended in style.

Niedermayer scored his first two goals since Dec. 18 and the Anaheim Mighty Ducks beat the Phoenix Coyotes 5-3 Saturday night to gain ground in the Western Conference playoff race.

"It's been a little frustrating for me the last little while," said Niedermayer, who scored in five of seven December games before beginning his 21-game streak without a goal. "It's nice to contribute like that."

Teemu Selanne netted his team-best 28th goal, and Jonathan Hedstrom and Francois Beauchemin scored 43 seconds apart late in the second period for the Mighty Ducks, who won for the fifth time in seven games (5-1-1).

Anaheim moved within two points of Edmonton for eighth place in the West.

"Every game's important for us," Niedermayer said. "It seems like every time we win, we look up and the teams ahead of us won, too."

Geoff Sanderson and Steven Reinprecht scored 48 seconds apart midway through the first period, and Shane Doan added a late third-period goal for the Coyotes, who have lost seven of nine (2-6-1).

Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said he and his staff spoke to Niedermayer and Hedstrom on Friday night and again before the morning skate, urging them to be more physical.

"It wasn't a question of being upset," Carlyle said. "It was disappointment with the way things have been going."

Hedstrom broke a 2-2 tie at 17:20 of the second period when he redirected a shot from the top of the left circle by Ruslan Salei between Curtis Joseph's pads for a 3-2 lead.

"He talked to us before the game and said we needed more physical play," said Hedstrom, whose goal was his first since a hat trick Jan. 9 against Los Angeles. "That's something we need to do all the time."

Beauchemin made it 4-2 at 18:03 when he took a pass from Scott Niedermayer two strides in front of the blue line and one-timed a blast over Joseph's right shoulder.

"We played the whole game in our zone and we can't afford to do that," Doan said. "This is a challenge to each one of us in this room to be better."

Doan cut the lead to 4-3 on a power play with 2:07 to go, sliding a long rebound around Jean-Sebastien Giguere as Joseph left the ice for an extra attacker.

Joseph came off the ice again with 1:19 remaining, leading to Rob Niedermayer's empty-net goal 14 seconds later that made it 5-3.

"They played like a team that was desperate to win and we played like a team that was standing around," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "We had no battle and had no fight. They did the little things that you need to do to win."

Rob Niedermayer gave Anaheim a 1-0 lead at 5:44 of the first period when he stole the puck, left a drop pass for Hedstrom for the shot, then beat Joseph off the long rebound.

Sanderson tied it 1-1 at 12:44 of the period when he split the Anaheim defense, faked once and pulled the puck to his backhand before scoring against Giguere.

Reinprecht made it 2-1 at 13:32 when he poked a loose puck in front of the net to the right. Giguere, already spread low on the ice, attempted in vain to grab the puck before Reinprecht chipped it over his left shoulder.

Selanne tied it at 14:16, scoring into the open right side of the net to complete a 2-on-1 rush.

Phoenix committed 12 minor penalties, including seven in the second period.

"We couldn't get any momentum," Sanderson said. "We're all responsible for taking bad penalties, every one of us. You can't get any momentum when you're defending all of the time."

Notes: Anaheim outshot the Coyotes 36-17, including 15-3 in the second period. ... Selanne has 12 goals and 20 assists in his last 26 games. ... Giguere is 7-3-4 in his last 14 starts. ... Sean O'Donnell, acquired by Anaheim from the Coyotes on Thursday, had an assist and a pair of minor penalties in his return to Phoenix. ... Oleg Kvasha, acquired by Phoenix from the New York Islanders on Thursday, had an assist in his Coyotes debut. ... The Ducks are 5-0-1 against Phoenix this season.
