GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -Mikael Tellqvist saw the puck on Teemu Selanne's stick and could only hope for help from the goal post.
Tellqvist got the assist he needed midway through the third period when Selanne hit the post and made 29 saves of his own to help the Phoenix Coyotes snap an eight-game losing streak against Anaheim with a 2-0 win Saturday night.
"He doesn't miss too many of those," said Tellqvist, who recorded his third career shutout and first for the Coyotes. "I just wanted to make sure it didn't go off the post and go in."
Shane Doan and Fredrik Sjostrom provided the offense, scoring 13 seconds apart late in the third period for the Coyotes, who won for just the second time in seven games (2-4-1).
"You need a big goal," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "If you can get a big goal, that's what you need about those guys. And that's what Shane got, a big goal. It came at a big time and we needed it."
The Ducks, winners of 12 of their last 14 overall, had won 10 of their last 11 against Phoenix. Anaheim was shut out for the second time this season.
"We hit posts, we missed passes, we flubbed pucks into people's feet, all those kind of things," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "But that's sports. That's what keeps coaches scratching their heads and newspapers writing."
Mike Comrie fired a long shot from just inside the blue line which goalie Jean-Sebastian Giguere kicked onto Doan's stick just inside the right circle. Doan then fired the rebound into the open right side of the net for a 1-0 lead with 5:02 to play.
"We got some bounces and took advantage of them," Doan said. "It was huge to get a shutout."
Phoenix won the ensuing faceoff, quickly moving the puck deep into the Anaheim zone. Sjostrom made it 2-0 when he redirected Keith Ballard's one-timer past Giguere.
"We didn't do the things that make us successful and by not doing that we didn't put pressure on them and gave them confidence," Giguere said. "Instead of making the tempo ourselves and making the simple play we tried making the hard play. Every time we did that we turned the puck over."
Giguere made 30 saves for the Ducks, who were held without a point for only the fifth time in 38 games this season. The goalie was pulled with 2:06 remaining in favor of an extra attacker, but Tellqvist made three saves over the final 2 minutes to preserve the victory.
Notes: Phoenix's last victory against Anaheim was Nov. 12, 2005, a 2-1 overtime win in Glendale. ... Doan's goal was his first since Nov. 30, a span of nine games. ... Coyotes C Jeremy Roenick was a late scratch after leaving the team Saturday because of a "personal family illness." Roenick's absence was approved by general manager Mike Barnett and Gretzky, unlike his early departure from the arena in Vancouver on Dec. 12 after he was scratched from the lineup.
