ANAHEIM
– Just when the Ducks looked like they were on the road to recovery in this young season, the Dallas Stars came along and slashed their tires.

Dallas scored three goals within just over five minutes of each other in the second period to jump out to a 4-0 lead that ultimately resulted in a 5-0 whitewashing of the Ducks at Honda Center.

"It's obviously not the type of game we wanted to see, especially after the last couple where we thought we were making strides and starting to do some good things out on the ice," said Ducks captain Chris Pronger. "Today as a group we weren’t able to accomplish anything."

The Ducks (6-8-2) came into the game with a two-game winning streak after victories at home against Columbus and on the road Saturday at Phoenix. Dallas (6-6-2) had lost three straight and was able to avoid its first four-game losing streak since 2003.

Dallas goalie Marty Turco (shielded on this play) had 19 saves in recording his 31st career shutout.

Mike Ribeiro put Dallas on top 1-0 after one period with a power play goal with just 24 seconds left, deflecting a loose puck past J.S. Giguere.

But the Ducks played well in the first and appeared still in it until the 5-minute, 16-second flurry in the second. Jussi Jokinen scored the first one by recovering a briefly knocked away puck in the slot and wristing it in on the power play. Brendan Morrow followed that less than four minutes later by popping in a rebound. Then with just 3.6 remaining in the stanza, Jere Lehtinen one-timed a pretty Mike Ribeiro pass that slid across the painted area in front of the net.

The Ducks couldn’t get much of anything going in the period, putting just four shots on goal after getting off 11 in the first.

"I thought for about 10 or 12 minutes, we played more of a type of hockey that we needed to play," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "Then for whatever reason, we just seemed to be zapped of our energy. We couldn’t execute. Just one of those nights that didn’t go our way, for sure. We were scrambling and just trying to survive."

The two power play tallies came after the Ducks entered the game having allowed just two goals in 37 short-handed situations at home this season.

Dallas would add another goal by Chris Conner midway through the third, the first goal of Conner’s season in just his second game of the campaign.

The one negative for the Stars on the night was the lack of a point from forward Mike Modano. The veteran entered the game needing just one point to tie Phil Housley’s record for points by a U.S. born player (1,232). But Modano was not one of the eight different Dallas players to score at least a point.

Jere Lehtinen, Mike Ribeiro and Sergei Zubov had three points apiece.

Dallas goalie Marty Turco saved all 19 Ducks shots in handing Anaheim its fourth shutout of the season. It was Turco's 31st blanking of his career. Giguere could only stop 15 of 19 before being replaced by Ilya Bryzgalov to begin the third period.

Anaheim will try to get back on track when it faces Phoenix here on Wednesday.

GAME LOG

3rd Period

20:00 - END OF GAME - The Ducks again can't find the net in the period, as Dallas puts the finishing touches on a 5-0 shutout.

There really aren't that many people left in here right now.

15:08 - Todd Marchant appears to take a stick to the face and is down on all fours the ice. He is eventually led off by Ducks trainer Tim Clark, but appears cut over the left eye.

11:45 - ANA Penalty - Todd Marchant, 2 min. holding. "Walls Come Tumbling Down" plays over the PA system.

8:44 - DALLAS GOAL - CHRIS CONNER - Conner races to a Jussi Jokinen pass off the left wing wall, picks it up and fires a shot that races past Bryzgalov's shoulder top shelf. Sergei Zubov gets the second helper. Many of the crowd start heading out.

6:32 - Kunitz hammers a one-timer as he skates across the blue line and Turco snatches it out of the air with the leather.

4:20 - Parros, May and Mowers on a line for the Ducks.

1:02 - Bryzgalov immediately makes his presence felt by making a sprawling glove save on a Jokinen one-timer.

0:00 - The Ducks start the third with Ilya Bryzgalov in net.

During the intermission, the first submission in the What Would You Do for a Honda Ridgeline video contest is a whole lot of nothing and is ultimately booed. The second one is a couple of little girls standing behind a Ducks logo and yelling something inaudible. And that gets booed too. This crowd is in an understandably foul mood. Now they're booing kids. Did I fall asleep and wake up in Philadelphia?

2nd Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - The Stars score three within 5:16 of each other to demoralize the Ducks, who only had four shots of their own in the period. It's 4-0 Stars.

19:56 - DALLAS GOAL - JERE LEHTINEN - With just 3.6 seconds left in the period, Mike Ribeiro comes from behind the net to make a slick backhand pass across the crease that Lehtinen one-times in the top of the net. It's 4-0 Dallas and here come the boo birds.

18:28 - DALLAS GOAL - BRENDAN MORROW - Jere Lehtinen comes from behind the net and tries to tuck in a backhand. The rebound pops out to Morrow at the top of the crease and he easily bats it back in. It's 3-0 Dallas.

14:40 - DALLAS GOAL - JUSSI JOKINEN - Jokinen takes a pass from Matt Niskanan up the middle of the rink and it's briefly knocked away as Jokinen takes a hit from Francois Beauchemin. But no Ducks recover the puck and Jokinen picks it up. He quickly fires a wrister that eludes Giguere on the glove side. Second assist goes to Turco.

12:54 - ANA Penalty - Chris Pronger, 2 min. interference. That wipes out the Anaheim advantage.

12:30 - Now Perry, Getzlaf and Kunitz.

11:38 - Moen, Pahlsson and Niedermayer on the first PP unit for Anaheim.

11:38 - DAL Penalty - Marty Turco, 2 min. delay of game. Mowers takes the puck from Turco as the goalie again goes way out to play it, and it finds Niedermayer alone in front, but the whistle blows after Niedermayer loses it temporarily because Turco touched it outside the trapezoid.

9:40 - Ryan Getzlaf has a chance to punch in a rebound, but Turco does a great job to deny it.

Replays show Schneider took a puck off the ankle and whinced in pain, but he's back out there.

9:26 - ANA Penalty - Kent Huskiins, 4 min. roughing and DAL Penalty - Steve Ott, 2 min. boarding and 4 min. roughing. After the whistle, Huskins and Ott tangle near the blueline and it gets a little ugly before it's broken up.

During the timeout, it's time once again for the Ducks Trivia Challenge. It's Jim from Rancho Santa Margarita. The question: Which other Ducks player besides Todd Marchant is about to reach his 900th game? Rob Niedermayer, Travis Moen or Brad May. He guesses May and gets it right! (Travis Moen? Really? He's like 25.) Bonus question is: How many more games does May need? Jim guesses 4. It's 5. Pretty darn close!

7:10 - Just as the power play is ending, Schneider fires a rocket from the top of the circle that misses the cage. Prior to that, no Ducks shots on the PP.

5:04 - DAL Penalty - Jere Lehtinen, 2 min. tripping. Ducks go on the power play, where they were 0-1 in the first period.

4:25 - Drew Miller controls an Andy McDonald pass on the left wing and takes a shot that slides by Turco but also slides by the right post.

We're taking down the scoreboard for now because it's having technical difficulties.

0:00 - We're off and running in the second.

During the intermission, the Fantasy Broadcaster Challenge actually is successful this time, as the mic is working for both contestants. The one glitch was that PA announcer Phil Hullett introduced the clip as being Steve Carroll, when it was TV guy John Ahlers. Contestant No. 1 loses the crowd when he flashes his giant belly before his turn, then calls Ryan Getzlaf "the sexiest man with a goatee" during the play-by-play. Contestant No. 2 actually does a nice job and is an overwhelming winner by crowd cheer vote.

1st Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - The Ducks play well enough in the period, with 11 shots, but can't find the net. Dallas gets a late one on the power play to take a 1-0 lead.

19:36 - DALLAS GOAL (POWER PLAY) - MIKE RIBEIRO (SCORING CHANGE) - Sergei Zubov puts the puck on net from the top of the right circle. It hits a Ducks stick on its way and it's deflected in by Lehtinen and finally Ribeiro just outside the crease. It's 1-0 Dallas.

18:20 - Modano has a chance at a loose puck in front of Giguere that might have given him a tie for the record, but he can't put it home as it's knocked away.

17:42 - ANA Penalty - Ryan Getzlaf - 2 min. roughing. Turco makes a nice high save on a Getzlaf attempt on the power play. Getzlaf inexplicably shoves Mattias Nortstrom after Turco holds the puck and gets the whistle.

17:01 - DAL Penalty - Stephane Robidas, 2 min. cross checking. Robidas drills Mark Mowers in the back as Mowers tries to screen Turco on a Ducks shot attempt.

13:06 - Parros nails the old Ducks enforcer, Todd Fedoruk with a hit near the Dallas blue line that spins Fedoruk and send him down.

12:40 - The puck is bandied about in front of the Dallas goal and bounces virtually everywhere but the net.

11:51 - Zubov slings one from straightaway blue line and Giguere corrals it.

10:59 - Miller fires one right after the faceoff, but right in Turco's tummy.

7:03 - After the whistle, May can be seen in the box tending to his left hand.

7:03 - Perry tries to make a pas to Getzlaf in the slot, but it's knocked away. Kunitz picks up the loose one and flips a shot that Turco just saves.

6:47 - Brad May and Krys Barch drop the gloves seconds after the faceoff in the Dallas zone, taken ironically enough, by George Parros. May gets most of the shots in and appears to get the decision. They both get 5.

6:42 - Schneider makes a phenomenal long pass to Perry, who takes the puck and fires a wrister from the right wing that Turco nabs.

4:37 - Turco again plays with fire, playing the puck behind the net. Rob Niedermayer steals it, then shuttles to Pahlsson in front, but Turco gets back in time to save and hold.

I'm not crazy about Dallas' new jerseys. From far away you can barely see the logo on the front because it's in yellow.

0:57 - Marty Turco goes way out into the corner to play a puck, and Perry takes it from him, but before Perry can skate with it from behind the net, he gets drilled by a Dallas player.

0:00 - And we're underway in front of a late-arriving, or maybe not showing up at all, Honda Center crowd. Remember, Dallas' Mike Modano is 1 point away from tying the scoring record for U.S.-born players.

Pregame

7:07 p.m. - A newcomer at Honda Center, baritone Robbie Britt, performs a feverish, almost angry, rendition. It's the first time in years the Ducks haven't sung an alternate anthem against Dallas, which they did in the past for fear of Stars fans yelling "Stars" twice during the song. The Ducks decided enough was enough in changing the song for a couple of Dallas fans.

Mowers, Miller and McDonald on the first line for the Ducks. We'll see if it stays that way throughout.
