ANAHEIM – Struggling to score goals all season, the Ducks have lately used the Phoenix Coyotes to cure their woes. But a second straight five-goal output against the Coyotes wasn’t enough this time, as Anaheim fell in overtime at Honda Center, 6-5.
After Corey Perry ran into teammate Francois Beauchemin inside the Ducks blue line and lost the puck, Shane Doan stole it and fired a slap shot that eluded goaltender J.S. Giguere for the winner with just 30.3 remaining in the extra session.
Corey Perry scored the game-tying goal in regulation, but the Ducks couldn't finish in OT.
Giguere had looked sharp in coming on for a struggling Ilya Brygalov in a tough second period for Anaheim.
"We scored five goals and that should be enough to win the game," Giguere said. "We’re just going have to play better defensively next game. The bottom line is we can’t beat ourselves up. We were down 4-2 and we managed to get a point tonight."
The Ducks did manage to crawl out of a two-goal hole with a late goal by Mathieu Schneider in a bad second period (in which Phoenix scored three times) and Drew Miller strike early in the third.
Phoenix, just 6-7-0 on the season, earned its fifth straight victory on the road. The loss denied the Ducks (6-8-3) a tie for first in the Pacific Division, which was set up for them by a Dallas win in San Jose.
Peter Mueller, a 19-year-old rookie center, paced the Coyotes with an unlikely hat trick, giving him just four goals on the year.
The Ducks had sent the game to overtime with a Perry one-timer goal 5:38 into the period. It marked the second straight game the Ducks (averaging just 2.06 goals per game coming in) scored five against the Coyotes, including a 5-2 win in Phoenix on Saturday night. But it also marked 11 goals given up in the last two games, starting with a 5-0 loss at Honda Center two nights ago.
Mueller broke the ice 8:51 into the first, just his second goal of the year. Mueller deflected a pretty cross-ice pass off the tape of Keith Ballard to put the Coyotes on top.
Chris Kunitz quickly knotted it with a rebound goal on the Ducks power play. Ryan Getzlaf skated into the slot and took a shot that bounced off Phoenix goalie Alex Auld, with Kunitz scooping it in with the backhand. Auld had shutout the Ducks in a 1-0 decision in the last matchup at Honda Center.
Todd Marchant gave the Ducks the lead for the first time with his first goal of the season, barely deflecting a hard shot from the point by Mathieu Schneider one second after a Phoenix penalty expired.
But Phoenix came back with a second-period flurry, the second straight game the Ducks would give up three in the second. Mueller got things started with his second of the game, one-timing a Shane Doan drop pass from the left circle.
Then Steven Reinprecht and Radim Vrbata took the life out of the Honda Center crowd with two goals within 1:26 of each other. The first came on a Steven Reinprecht deflection on the power play at 15:45, followed by a Radim Vrbata one-timer from the top of the crease at 17:11.
Drew Miller tied it early in the third, crashing the net to make it 4-4.
The last one prompted the exit of Ilya Bryzgalov, who was replaced by J.S. Giguere. Bryzgalov only managed 14 saves on 18 Phoenix shots.
The shakeup appeared to work as Schneider salvaged the period with a power play strike from the blue line that Kunitz slickly eluded by lifting his leg.
The goal gave the Ducks momentum into the third, as Miller tied it early by stuffing in the puck under Auld. Schneider set it up with a slap shot off the back boards that bounced right into the blue painted area, where Miller finished it.
Mueller put out the fire less than three minutes later with his third of the game, taking the puck from Kent Huskins near the left post and forcing it past Giguere.
That gave life to a whirlwind period, as Perry one-timed a Kunitz feed from the corner to make it 5-5. It was Perry’s fourth in five games and gave him a team-leading nine on the season. Video
Giguere saved nine of 11 shots in relief, taking the loss for the second straight game.
"It was one of those games where it seemed the last shot was going to win," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "They got the last shot and we made a mistake in turning over the puck in overtime. If you score five goals, you should win the hockey game. The positive point is we got our power play going and we created some offense.
"We came from behind and we didn’t quit. We had the emotional level. We were able to reach back for the third period and get ourselves into it."
The Ducks will look to bounce back with a Friday night tilt with San Jose at Honda Center.
4:29 - PHOENIX GOAL - SHANE DOAN - Corey Perry runs into Francois Beauchemin and loses the puck in the Ducks zone. Doan picks it up and fires a slap shot that flies past Giguere. Tough loss for the Ducks, 6-5.
3:45 - Giguere dodges a bullet as he looses the puck was out of position in the corner, but Andy McDonald steps up to knock the puck away from Vrbata in the slot.
2:55 - Giguere makes the second of two big stops in the last few seconds.
2:06 - A speedy Schneider fakes a shot, then fires from the top of the circle, but Auld corrals it.
0:50 - Getzlaf makes a sweet drag move into the slot, but can't get a stick on the shot attempt.
0:00 - Here we go.
Dallas is winning 3-1 in San Jose, and Mike Modano has two goals, giving him the points record for U.S.-born players. Glad he did it there and not here. If Dallas hangs on and the Ducks win, the two teams are tied for first, believe it or not.
20:00 - END OF REGULATION - The Ducks put some pressure on in the late part of the period, but can't get it through. We're going to overtime!
18:25 - Mowers makes a nice cross-ice pass to Niedermayer, who holds it for a blip before finally shooting it. But Auld is right there.
During the timeout, a fan in a white outfit and red cape dances feverishly in the aisle. He looks to be a Coyotes fan. He's also about 10 rows from the ice, so he paid good money to dance here.
16:50 - PHO Penalty - Ed Jovanovski, 2 min. holding. Jovo holds Kunitz in front of the Coyotes net. Big chance for Anaheim.
Now THIS is a fun game.
13:33 - McDonald makes a great pass to Miller from behind the net, but Miller swipes at it and comes up empty.
12:00 - The Ducks do a great job to clear the zone and kill the penalty, including Todd Marchant who moves the puck without a stick.
10:00 - ANA Penalty - Mathieu Schneider, 2 min. kneeing. Schneider takes down Mike York in the Ducks zone.
9:55 - Giguere makes a nice save on a Craig Weller one-timer attempt.
8:10 - Rob Niedermayer's shot froom the low corner bounces off Auld to Pahlsson, who goes around the net and tries a wraparound to no avail.
5:38 - ANAHEIM GOAL - COREY PERRY - Perry's scores his team-leading ninth after Kunitz grabs the puck in the corner and moves it to Perry, who one-times it through Auld's armpit. We're tied at 5s.
4:15 - PHOENIX GOAL (POWER PLAY) - PETER MUELLER - Mueller becomes an unlikely hat trick earner after Huskins can't corral the puck near the left post. Mueller digs it away toward the crease and pushes it past Giguere. By the way, Mueller is just a 19-year-old rookie and now has four goals in his career.
2:23 - ANA Penalty - Corey Perry, 2 min. high sticking.
1:38 - ANAHEIM GOAL - DREW MILLER - Mathieu Schneider appears to intentionally fire a slap shot off the back boards. It bounces right into the blue paint and Miller jams it in just under Auld. They briefly review it to see if it actually crossed and it did indeed. We're tied at 4. McDonald gets the second assist.
0:00 - And they're out of the gate in the third, good guys needing a goal.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - We could remember this period solely as the second straight game the Ducks gave up three in a period. But they get one back late, thanks to Schneider and pull it to 4-3.
18:43 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) MATHIEU SCHNEIDER - Schneider takes a pass from Pronger at the point and drills a slapper that Kunitz lifts a leg to elude. It eludes Auld as well to pull the Ducks within a goal. It's Schnieder's second as a Duck. Pronger has assisted on all three Ducks tallies. Getzlaf gets the second helper. It's 4-3 Phoenix.
18:21 - PHO Peter Mueller, 2 min. hooking. We're calling Mueller's name a lot tonight. Ducks go on the power play to end the period.
17:11 - Bryzgalov gets the hook and Giguere replaces him.
17:11 - PHOENIX GOAL - RADIM VRBATA - Mike York pulls the puck out from the back of the net and slips it to Vrbata at the top of the crease. Vrbata one-times it top shelf to make it 4-2 Phoenix.
15:45 - PHOENIX GOAL (POWER PLAY) - STEVEN REINPRECHT - Ed Jovanovski unleashes a wrister at the blue line that appears to tick off Reinprecht and past Bryzgalov. It's 3-2 Coyotes. A little crowd deflation going on.
15:20 - Chris Pronger is tall. He uses his length to thwart a cross-ice pass on the Coyotes power play.
14:14 - ANA Penalty - Todd Marchant, 2 min. high sticking. Marchant is guilty of the same thing that gave him the black eye from last game.
13:55 - Doan looks to have a certain goal as he makes a slick move near the left post, but he loses the handle.
13:19 - Chris Kunitz takes a pass in the slot, spins and shoots, but Auld saves and holds it with Perry breathing down his neck.
11:42 - Todd Marchant picks up a loose puck along the right wing boards, skates slickly into the slot and releases a shot that goes under Auld's glove but hits the right post.
The crowd objects to the announcement of the penalty to do-no-wrong Parros and here come the boos. At least they're aimed at the guys in stripes this time, instead of the Ducks.
10:35 - ANA Penalty - Geroge Parros, 2 min unsportsmanlike conduct. After the whistle, Parros gets a little aggressive with Derek Morris and then Daniel Carcillo and is given some time to think about it. It's possibly in objection to the hit put on Huskins.
10:00 - Kent Huskins is nailed it his own blueline, losing the puck to Niko Kapanan, whose breaking wrister is kicked away by Bryzgalov.
8:25 - PHOENIX GOAL - PETER MUELLER - With his back to the net , Shane Doan drops it to Mueller in the left circle, who one-times it right through Bryzgalov's legs. It comes exactly as the penalty expires, so it's technically an even-strength goal. Also, it's technically 2-2.
6:25 - ANA Penalty - Kent Huskins, 2 min. holding the stick. The new PA guy says "two minutes for holding the OPPONENT'S stick." Thanks for clearing that up.
It's time for the Ducks Travia Challenge. Larry from Ontario is our guy and for some reason, he giggles when they say, "Here's your question." The question: How many consecutive games did Sammy Pahlsson play to set the Ducks record. Larry gueses A.) 275 and he's right! Bonus question for a jersey: Who previously held the Ducks franchise record? He clearly gets some help in answering Oleg Tverdovsky and he wins! Of course, he's already wearing a jersey, so he'll have to give it away. Maybe to the guy who helped him.
4:10 - ANAHEIM GOAL - TODD MARCHANT - Just one second after the power play expires, Mathieu Schneider tags a slap shot from the point that barely nicks off Marchant's skate. It's briefly reviewed to see if Marchant kicked it in, but they determine he did not. It's Marchant's first of the season and it's 2-1 Ducks. Pronger gets the second assist, his second of the night.
2:09 - PHO Penalty - Derek Morris, 2 min. slashing.
2:05 - Getzlaf gets ahead of Jovanovski in the slot, but Jovo dives at him to thwart a breakaway.
0:00 - We're underway in the second.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - The Ducks give, and less than two minutes later, they take. It's 1-1 thanks to a Chris Kunitz goal halfway through. Phoenix outshoots Anaheim, 9-8. We'll be back in 17 minutes.
19:25 - Mike Zigomanis finds the puck alone in the slot, but his shot is batted away by Bryzgalov.
18:20 - McDonald skates from his own blueline to deep on the right wing, but his shot is snuffed out by Auld.
17:17 - Ed Jovanovski takes an inadvertant Travis Moen stick to the face and is down for a bit before he skates off. That's gonna leave a mark.
15:40 - Schneider gets decked at the blue line while getting rid of the puck.
14:45 - PHO Penalty - Zbynek Michalek, 2 min. hooking. Ducks get another shot.
13:51 - George Parros clears the puck the length of the ice as the penalty runs out and the crowd is into it.
13:05 - Bryz kick saves an Ed Jovanoski slapper and Mike York whiffs on the rebound try.
12:55 - Bryz does a nice job to smother a loose puck to his right before Mueller can pounce on it.
11:51 - ANA Penalty - Samuel Pahlsson, 2 min. hooking. Pahlsson wraps it around a Phoenix player while trying to kill the penalty.
11:35 - ANA Penalty - George Parros, 2 min. hooking. Ducks are shorthanded.
10:23 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - CHRIS KUNITZ - Getzlaf skates unimpeded into the slot and takes a shot the ricochets off Auld right to Kunitz at the top of the crease. He quickly scoops it in with the backhand. Chris Pronger gets the second assist.
10:09 - PHO Penalty - Zbynek Michalek, 2 min. delay of game. Michalek knocks the net off and it's deemed intentional.
8:51 - PHOENIX GOAL - PETER MUELLER - Keith Ballard takes a Steven Reinprecht drop pass at the blue line and makes a pretty cross-ice feed to Mueller, who deflects it past Bryzgalov. It's 1-0 Coyotes and it's dead silent in here.
6:09 - ANA and PHO Penalties - ANA Sean O'Donnell and PHO Daniel Carcillo 2 min. each slashing.
During the timeout they do the Delta First Class Upgrade, and one of the lucky contestants looks exactly like Francois Beauchemin, if he let himself go.
5:01 - And Moen makes six. Marvelous!
4:50 - Kent Huskins fires a wrister off a Ryan Getzlaf drop pass, but hits nothing but board.
3:10 - Brad May steps on the ice to give the Ducks their FIFTH forward whose last name starts with "M". That's 'mazing.
2:35 - Miller, McDonald and Marchant on a line for the Ducks.
Starting tonight, the Ducks PA announcer is Mike Carlucci, since Phil Hulett stepped aside. Here's the story on that.
0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.
