Penguins 5, Ducks 2
Anaheim Ducks 2, Pittsburgh Penguins 5

A disappointing four-game road trip for the Ducks came to an end with a 5-2 defeat to the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins at Mellon Arena.

Anaheim (6-10-3) did not catch fire as they had hoped while traveling, going 0-3-1 on the six-day trip. They will now try to right the ship in big seven-game homestand at Honda Center starting on Thursday.

A high note in the loss was Corey Perry extending his career-high scoring streak to 12 games with an assist on a Todd Marchant shorthanded goal in the first period. The 24-year-old right wing has nine goals, eight assists and 17 points during the hot stretch, which dates back to Oct. 21 vs. Dallas.

But the Ducks could not get much going offensively, while the Penguins took a lead 1:31 into regulation on a Matt Cooke goal and held on the rest of the way.

Bill Guerin followed soon after by ending Pittsburgh's eight-game streak without a power-play goal by scoring at the 5:13 mark of the first.

Guerin, who turned 39 last week, missed by an assist of having the so-called Gordie Howe hat trick - a goal, an assist and a fight. He fought in the third period with Ryan Getzlaf, who is 14 years younger, as the two traded punches before the sellout crowd of 17,052.

Guerin's goal, his fifth of the season, halted a streak of 30 consecutive unsuccessful Penguins power plays that began Oct. 30 in Columbus. With Pittsburgh ahead 1-0 after Cooke scored on a backhander from a slot 91 seconds into the game, Guerin beat Jean-Sebastien Giguere on a one-timer from the top of the right circle, with Sidney Crosby assisting.

The Ducks looked weary and off their game early on, failing to get a shot until Pittsburgh led 2-0 and taking the game's first three penalties. They were coming off a 7-4 loss in Detroit on Saturday in which they allowed five goals in the third period.

Todd Marchant gave Anaheim a lift by scoring shorthanded midway through the first period after Evgeni Malkin gave the puck away, but the Ducks couldn't solve Marc-Andre Fleury again until Teemu Selanne scored his 10th late in the third.

Staal answered Marchant's shorthander by scoring one of his own 4:09 into the second period. The center took Deryk Engelland's lead pass and beat Giguere high to the sick side for his ninth career shorthanded goal. Staal had an NHL rookie-record seven shorthanded goals in 2006-07, but had one in the two-plus seasons since - on Jan. 10 at Colorado. He also scored shorthanded in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final in Detroit.

With seven Penguins players injured and out, Engelland was one of five first-year players on the ice for Pittsburgh, which is currently missing four of its top six defensemen.

Martin Skoula, playing more with all those defensemen injured, scored his first of the season early in the third, with rookie defenseman Ben Lovejay getting an assist for his second career point. Cooke scored his second of the game into an empty net with 13 seconds remaining, with Staal assisting.

NOTES: The Penguins scored one goal in three games and three in four games before Malkin returned from a seven-game layoff with a shoulder injury, but have 11 goals in their last two . ...The Ducks have lost 10 of 13. ... Getzlaf's 11-game scoring streak ended.
