ANAHEIM – There’s something about daylight outside the rink that agrees with the Anaheim Ducks.
The Ducks’ 4-2 victory over the hot Phoenix Coyotes was the second this year in two afternoon games, and improved the Ducks to 13-1-4 in their last 18 home matinee games (dating back to 2002).
|The Ducks never trailed in beating the Coyotes 4-2, their third win in the last four.
The Ducks were able to do it this time thanks to goals by Mike Brown, Ryan Getzlaf
, Kyle Chipchura
and Bobby Ryan
, the last one coming with 19.5 seconds left to give the Ducks some nice insurance. Meanwhile, Jonas Hiller
helped keep the Coyotes down in the third by making a number of big saves among his 39 on the night to earn his third straight win.
Phoenix came into the game 8-1-1 in its last 10, something Getzlaf said he had "no clue" about. "We don't know what other teams are doing," he said. "We just need wins."
Phoenix crept to within a goal 3:39 into the third period when Adrian Aucoin one-timed a rolling puck past Hiller, but the Ducks hung on down the stretch to ensure that was as far as the Coyotes would get. They got some help when Ed Jovanovski committed a hooking penalty while trying to protect an empty Phoenix net with less than a minute left. And the Ducks converted on the ensuing power play, as Ryan chipped in a rebound goal off a Scott Niedermayer shot from the point to give Anaheim a two-goal lead and put the game away.
The Ducks carried a 1-0 cushion into the second period thanks to the third goal of the year from gritty winger Mike Brown at 13:14 of the first. Brown’s feed on the rush eluded teammate Petteri Nokelainen and kicked off the leg pad of goalie Ilya Bryzgalov. Brown reclaimed the loose puck and fired a wrist shot high and through.
"We’re going to be going out there with energy and anything we get is a bonus," Mike Brown said of his line. "We are going to play that hard game. All we do is pretty much get the puck to the net and crash the net. That is how we have to play."
The Coyotes nearly got the equalizer five minutes into the middle session, but were denied on a highlight-reel save by Hiller, who somehow threw out a leg pad to stop a Keith Yandle rebound try despite being down on all fours.
"Our goalie gave us a chance, obviously," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "Jonas stood tall in the hockey game for us, specifically in the penalty killing situations. The first period we were slapping the puck around and were flat. That is what you need, your goalie to pitch you a shutout for a period or so and then you get your feet underneath you."
Phoenix ultimately did get that first goal courtesy of Shane Doan with 7:48 left in the period, as Doan connected with a roofed shot from the slot. But Anaheim re-took the lead in a hurry, as Kyle Chipchura
scored his first of the season after being acquired by Anaheim from Montreal on Dec. 2. Chipchura got lost by Phoenix defenders in front of the net on the attack, and rookie Matt Beleskey
found him for a backhander that hit Bryzgalov and trickled behind him over the line.
"Around the net, I felt like I was rushing, panicking and forcing things," Chipchura said. "After getting one like that, it helps you relax. Beleskey raced their guy and made a little spin to me. I don’t know how I ended up being that alone in front of the net. I got it and tried to get it off quick."
made it 3-1 Ducks with a power play strike less than five minutes later. Getzlaf had plenty of room as he sauntered into the left wing circle and he fired a wrist shot that landed just inside the near post.
Before Ryan's power play goal, the Ducks missed a golden opportunity to take a two-goal lead with 3:39 left. Todd Marchant
was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked from behind on a breakaway attempt seconds after leaving the penalty box. But his penalty shot try went right into Bryzgalov's glove.
Nevertheless, Anaheim eventually got the insurance it craved and won its third game in the last four. At 14-14-7, the Ducks were also able to move out of the Western Conference cellar into a temporary tie for 12th place.
The Ducks have earned standings points in eight consecutive games vs. Phoenix (5-0-3) dating back to Jan. 4, 2009. The club is now 30-8-11 vs. the Coyotes since the start of the 2001-02 season.
The Ducks have won four of their last five HOME games vs. Phoenix, with points in all five (4-0-1). Anaheim improved its HOME record vs. Phoenix to 15-3-2 dating back to Nov. 9, 2004.
The Ducks improved their matinee record to 13-1-4 in the last 18 HOME day games (dating back to Oct. 20, 2002), earning 30 of a possible 36 points (.833 winning percentage) and outscoring the opposition, 59-32. Anaheim has hosted Phoenix twice during that 18-game stretch, earning a 5-3 win on Oct. 23, 2005 and a single point in a 4-3 shootout loss on Nov. 23, 2007.
With two assists this afternoon, Ryan Whitney is now tied for the league-lead in scoring (3-18=21) among US-born defensemen (with STL’s Erik Johnson). Whitney now has five assists (0-5=5) in his last four games.
has a three-game goal streak (3-0=3) and points in nine of the last 12 (5-8=13). He’s also amassed points in six straight contests at HOME (3-5=8).
extended his point streak to six games (3-5=8), one game short of his career high (seven games; Jan. 16-31, 2009; 5-3=8). He also had a six-game point streak earlier this season from Nov. 3-14 (4-2=6). He now is tied for the league-lead in goals this season among US-born players (16).
has won three straight games (3-0-0), stopping 102-of-107 shots for a .953 SV% and 1.67 GAA (5 GA/180 MIN) during that stretch.
With a goal this afternoon, Mike Brown has established a new career high for goals in a season with three.
has attempted (including today) three career penalty shots (0-for-3). His last penalty shot attempt came on Jan. 26, 1997 with Edmonton vs. Washington (Kolzig).
20:00 - END OF GAME - The Ducks hold on down the stretch and get some late insurance from Ryan to win it 4-2.
19:40 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - BOBBY RYAN - With the Ducks up a man, Niedermayer flutters the puck on net, where it takes a friendly kick off Bryzgalov, and Ryan in there to chip the rebound into the open net. Huge goal for the Ducks that puts this game away.
19:23 - Bryz back in net, obviously.
19:23 - PHX Penalty - Ed Jovanovski, 2 min. hooking. Jovanovski gets called for the hook chasing the puck with Perry.
19:02 - Timeout Phoenix after the whistle.
18:30 - Net empty for Phoenix.
18:29 - Nice save Hiller as Doan whips a shot from the high slot. Ducks have 1:31 left to hang on.
17:21 - Marchant swings in from the right side on the penalty shot and he wrists it into Bryzgalov's glove. Would have been huge for Anaheim.
17:21 - Marchant gets out of the box following the kill and gets the puck with no one in front of him but Bryzgalov. He's shoots it wide just as he's hooked from behind by Matthew Lombardi and is awarded a penalty shot.
16:10 - Coupla stops by Hiller before Chipchura clears it the length of the sheet.
15:08 - ANA Penalty - Todd Marchant
, 2 min. holding. Marchant apparently goes overboard pinning Upshall into the wall.
13:50 - Nice pass from Getzlaf to Sexton after a rebound, but Sexton can't find a clear path to shoot it through. Seconds later, he tries a redirect from the low circle, saved, to finish a long shift for the kid.
11:55 - PHX Penalty - Ed Jovanovski, 2 min. slashing. Sexton with a tremendous burst of speed to chase down a puck and dart in front of Jovanovski to draw the slash from behind as he's just about to arrive at the net.
9:40 - Ryan again with a mis-hit shot from in close.
9:10 - Ryan looks to take the shot, but instead slaps a pass to Ryan, who redirects it right into Bryzgalov.
8:36 - PHX Penalty - James Vandermeer, 2 min. cross checking. With the puck bouncing around in front of the net, Vandermeer takes down Marchant.
8:22 - Perry makes a nice feed to Getzlaf in the slot, but Getzlaf doesn't get all of the one-timer and Bryzgalov is able to slide over and stop it.
7:45 - Ryan rips a slap shot from the low right wing circle, off Bryz.
5:00 - Perry fires a shot right off Getzlaf's won draw, but it hits Bryz and pops into the air, where he gloves it.
4:44 - PHX Penalty - Daniel Winnik, 2 min. holding. Winnik pulls down Koivu by the arm.
3:39 - PHOENIX GOAL - ADRIAN AUCOIN - Radim Vrbata tries to throw the puck on net from behind the cage, and it kicks out toward Aucoin, who fires a one-timer past Hiller. Ducks lead cut to a goal.
Can't believe I've forgotten to this until now, but Ilya Bryzgalov seems rather calm out there. Maybe it's because, "Is hockey. Is only a game. Why you haf to be mad?"
0:00 - Here we go in the third.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - It's a dandy for the Ducks, who score twice despite getting off just five shots, and they lead it 3-1.
19:30 - Whitney steps up on a rolling puck and rockets a one-timer that Bryzgalov just does get a piece of.
17:26 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - RYAN GETZLAF - On the power play, Getzlaf gets the puck from Ryan Whitney near the point and heads toward the left wing circle. When no Coyotes comes to him, he slings a shot that lands just inside the near post. It's 3-1 Ducks and Getzlaf has nine goals on the season, four of which have come in his last seven games.
16:30 - Koivu, Sexton, Calder on the first PP unit.
16:22 - PHX Penalty - Ed Jovanovski, 2 min. holding.
12:46 - ANAHEIM GOAL - KYLE CHIPCHURA - The Ducks get one back in a hurry as Beleskey has the puck along the wall on the attack and the Coyotes lose track of Chipchura in the slot. Beleskey finds him and Chipchura fires a backhander from in close that hits off Bryzgalov and trickles behind him over the stripe. First of the year and first as a Duck for Chipchura and Anaheim leads 2-1.
12:12 - PHOENIX GOAL - SHANE DOAN - On the rush, Upshall slides it to an oncoming Doan in the slot, and Doan fires it high glove. We're tied 1-1.
Three different couples sitting in the last row of the arena get put on the video board for Kiss Cam. Nice to know we're equal-opportunity here.
9:50 - Phenomenal play by Sexton, who dekes around Jovanovski in the slot and fires a shot that somehow bounds out after it sails past Bryzgalov. Apparently it hit a post, but I never heard a ting
8:08 - PHX Penalty - Paul Bissonnette, 10 min. misconduct. Bissonnette gets a little riled up during a scuffle following a Coyotes shot that some Ducks came a little too long after the whistle.
8:05 - Ducks are being outshot 23-11 in this game. Luckily for Anaheim, one of those got through.
6:51 - Hiller again with the bailout after a Festerling turnover, making a solid stop on a Taylor Pyatt redirect try.
5:21 - Kill. Taco. Ducks fans should thank Hiller for that one.
4:59 - Ducks dodge a MAJOR bullet when Hiller somehow reaches back with the leg pad and saves a Keith Yandle shot off the rebound while Hiller was down on all fours. Still not sure how he made that stop.
3:21 - ANA Penalty - Nick Boynton, 2 min. hooking. And it's Del Taco penalty kill time!
2:45 - Suddenly Sniper Mike Brown fires his third shot of the game on net.
0:00 - Off and running.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - It's a solid opener for the Ducks, who go up 1-0 thanks to Mike Brown.
18:03 - Several nice stops by Hiller in the last 20 seconds or so.
16:20 - Good stop Hiller point blank on Doan.
It's trivia time and Mike (I think that was his name) is asked about Saku Koivu's last two game-winning goals. One was against Vancouver and the other was against which team? He's given the choice of Columbus, Dallas and Detroit. He guesses Detroit and there is an audible groan from the crowd. No, dude, it was Dallas here.
14:46 - ANA Penalty - Bobby Ryan
, 2 min. tripping. I might get in trouble for this, but that was not a good call. Keith Yandle gets face to face with Ryan on the rush, loses an edge and goes down hard. Somehow Ryan gets the tripping call and the crowd lets out a chorus of boos.
13:14 - ANAHEIM GOAL - MIKE BROWN - Brown does a lot on this play, making an attemped feed in front on the rush from the left wing that eludes his teammate Petteri Nokelainen but hits off Bryzgalov's leg pad to the middle of the ice. Brown alertly slides over to the slot to jump on the puck and wrists it high past Bryzgalov for the goal. It's 1-0 Anaheim on Brown's third of the year (the first two game-winners).
9:50 - ANA Penalty - Kyle Chipchura
, 2 min. high sticking. First penalty for Anaheim.
9:01 - Sexton with a nice fake shot and drop pass to Koivu, but he can't do a lot with it.
Here's one you don't hear a lot. During the Ducks power play, someone below us in the crowd just yelled, "GIVE IT TO SEXY!"
7:04 - PHX Penalty - Ed Jovanovski, 2 min. interference. Jovo bumps Bobby Ryan
on Ryan's path to the puck in the corner.
5:40 - Sexton with a shot from the right wing that Bryzgalov stops. Hard to believe we haven't been back here since Big Sexy's two-goal night against Dallas.
4:56 - PHX Penalty - Taylor Pyatt, 2 min. tripping. And just before the whistle, Ed Jovanovski drives a falling Getzlaf into the wall and Getzlaf is not happy.
Husband tennis ball has his flourescent sweatshirt draped over his lap, while wifey wears hers. I swear, I'll never figure those two out.
2:50 - Hiller makes a nice stop up high on a shot rifled from the point, with Paul Bissonnette (who leads the league in double-letters) all over him.
0:00 - And we're underway in a rare afternoon tilt at Honda Center
1:07 p.m. - Nicely harmonized rendition of the anthem by the four-woman Harborlite Quartet. Made me have Wilson Phillips flashbacks.
Starters in bold/italics. Scratches crossed out.
