ANAHEIM – A Ducks team that scored 13 goals during a recent three-game winning streak has failed to find the net in its last two games.
Two nights ago it was Detroit’s Jimmy Howard who stopped all 41 Anaheim shots, and this evening it was Ilya Bryzgalov who blanked his former team, stonewalling all 26 Ducks attempts. It was the first loss to the Coyotes this season for Anaheim, which had won the first two matchups, including a 6-4 victory a week ago in Phoenix.
"It’s frustrating when you’re out there trying to work as hard as you can and things aren’t happening," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf
. "It’s not a matter of putting the puck in. It’s a matter of all those other little things that we’re not doing properly. We have to reach back here and start doing those again."
Phoenix got all the scoring it would need 10:59 into the first period, as Taylor Pyatt tipped a shot by Sami Lepisto enough to get it under a noticeably disappointed Jonas Hiller
"It seems like we don’t really have a starting point in any of the games, specifically the last two," said coach Randy Carlyle. "We started both of them, the first 10-12 minutes we were playing defensive zone coverage and not on the attack. It seems like it takes 10 minutes for us to get warmed up and that is not acceptable."
Shane Doan made it a two-goal lead late in the second period on the 27th of his career against the Ducks (all with the Phoenix franchise), as Keith Yandle fired from the point on the power play and Doan punched in the rebound from just right of the net.
The Coyotes iced it with 2:56 left after the Ducks sent Hiller to the bench for an extra attacker, and seconds later Lee Stempniak picked up a turned over puck and poured it into the empty net from behind the Anaheim blueline.
"It seemed the frustration level got us and we couldn’t execute," Carlyle said. "It seemed liked everywhere we turned, there was a white sweater tonight."
The loss spoiled the return of Ducks winger Joffrey Lupul
, who was playing his first game since last December 8 after experiencing complications related to back surgery. Lupul had three shots in 14:28 of action.
"It was enjoyable just being back around the guys," said Lupul, who switched to uniform number 19 after wearing 14 last season. "We’re here to win games. I’m glad to have the first one out of the way. Hopefully now, I can just join the team and go about business as usual.
"I felt good before the game. I was pretty excited. Once the game got going, it was just hockey again. If I had any nerves, they were gone by the first or second shift. It was not the result we wanted. It’s frustrating. I can play better and everyone can play better."
The Ducks went 2-5-0 during a stretch in which they played seven of their last eight at home. They head north to Canada for their next two, Tuesday in Edmonton and Wednesday in Vancouver.
20:00 - Ducks get shut out for the second straight night, 2-0.
19:01 - Bryz stops a Sutton shot from the point, then Marchan'ts rebound try.
18:21 - ANA Penalty - Paul Mara
, 2 min. slashing and 2 min. roughing and PHX Penalty - Wojtek Wolski, 2 min. cross checking and 2 min. slashing. Frustration rears its head as Mara starts pushing and shoving with Wolski, Lupul gets involved and Mara jumps in again.
17:04 - PHOENIX GOAL (EMPTY NET) - LEE STEMPNIAK - Seconds after Hiller heads to the bench, the Ducks lose the puck when Getzlaf tries to feed behind himself to Koivu near the blueline. Stempniak picks it up and pours it into the empty net from the Anaheim blueline.
17:00 - Hiller to the bench.
16:54 - Timeout Ducks with 3:06 left. Hiller comes way out of the net, looking to maybe head to the bench.
16:40 - Perry takes the puck away in the Phoenix end and feeds Ryan, but he can't get his stick on it and kicks it wide of the net.
14:17 - Hiller makes a big stop on a breakaway from Doan. Absolutely huge, because if that one goes in, this is over.
12:52 - Lupul has a loose puck come to him and he snaps a wrist shot that Bryz gloves.
6:20 - Fowler gets hit on the hand and he's in some pain.
5:35 - Ryan feeds Perry right in front on the rush, but Bryz stonewalls.
5:00 - Lydman checks Bissonnette into the turnbuckle near the Anaheim bench. That couldn't have felt good.
2:55 - Bonino with a nice pass right on the doorstep to Ryan, but another big stop for Bryz.
1:25 - Ducks on the power play now.
0:00 - Off and running in the third.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Another lackluster period for Anaheim, who go down 2-0 on Doan's goal.
20:00 - PHX Penalty - Eric Belanger, 2 min. hooking. Belanger hooks Beleskey, a big break for Anaheim.
19:55 - Beleskey races from the box and chases down the puck, trying a wraparound that Bryz denies.
19:18 - ANA Penalty - Corey Perry
, 2 min. slashing. Perry swings the stick and gets Stempniak on the hands. It's a 5 on 3 for Phoenix. Not happy times right now.
17:50 - ANA Penalty - Matt Beleskey
, 2 min. interference Beleskey slams into Fiddler, who didn't see it coming, near the Coyotes bench and Fiddler is slow to get up.
17:23 - PHOENIX GOAL (POWER PLAY) - SHANE DOAN - On the PP, Yandle fires a slap shot from the point that kicks off Hiller, who can't get over in time as the rebound bounces to Doan and he fires it through on the near side. Somehow you had to know Doan would again play a role in a Ducks-Coyotes game. It's 2-0.
16:42 - ANA Penalty - Andy Sutton
, 2 min. slashing. Sutton gets into it with Upshall, and ultimately drills him in the back away from the puck.
Check out this incredible cake Scott Niedermayer's wife Lisa made for Cam Fowler today on his 19th birthday.
14:54 - ANA Penalty - Paul Mara
, 2 min. hooking.
10:09 - Doan swings at a loose puck, but Hiller is ready for it.
7:32 - PHX Penalty - Derek Morris, 2 min. hooking. Morris gets the stick into Ryan in the Phoenix end.
6:35 - A half of a broken stick goes flying, luckily landing in the protective netting and sticking there. That could have been ugly.
5:20 - Getzlaf returns the favor, whipping the puck the Ryan in front, but it's knocked away again.
2:45 - Ryan spins and backhands a pass to Getzlaf on the doorstep, but it gets knocked away at the last instant.
0:00 - Here we go in the second.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Not a great one for the Ducks, who trail 1-0.
17:18 - ANA Penalty - Andy Sutton
, 2 min. slashing. Hasn't been a good period for the Ducks.
16:50 - Blake fires a one-timer from the slot that Bryz makes a nice save on. The Ducks don't need anymore great goalie performances after Jimmy Howard shined Friday night.
14:05 - ANA Penalty - Kyle Chipchura
, 2 min. hooking.
Scoring change on the Phoenix goal. It was scored by Pyatt.
13:00 - Shots on goal were 7-3 Ducks. Now they're 13-8 Yotes.
10:59 - PHOENIX GOAL - TAYLOR PYATT - Sami Lepisto fires a one-timer from the top of the right wing circle that Pyatt gets a piece of and it gets under Hiller. He's not too happy about it, as he throws his head back in frustration. It's 1-0 Coyotes.
Fans can text to decide whose iPod they can "listen" to later in the game -- Lupul, Selanne or Sbisa. Right now it's neck and neck between Selanne and Lupul, with Selanne pulling ahead. Really? You want to listen to Finnish rock? Okay.
4:39 - Parros and Paul Bissonnette (a.k.a. "Biznasty") throw down right off the draw, as Parros gets in a couple of shots on the side of the head before being taken down to the ice, as Bissonnette gets in a shot after Parros is down.
3:34 - Small tussle in front oft he net as Perry hacks away trying to get the puck under Bryz, and nearly does it.
3:00 - Lupul on the second PP unit with Blake and Koivu.
2:30 - Getzlaf with a nice feed across the middle to Ryan, who fires off Bryzgalov.
1:31 - PHX Penalty - Derek Morris, 2 min. tripping. Morris takes down Perry in front of the net.
0:45 - Hiller with a good stop on a shot through traffic.
0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.
Kids from the Aliso Viejo Mini Mites takes their spots in front of each Duck during the anthem, as Brad Haynes sings. Fairly adorable.
