LOS ANGELES – Undoubtedly frustrated by another shootout loss, the Ducks had to find some solace in at least getting to that point in a 2-1 defeat to the rival Kings in front of a sellout crowd of 18,118 at Staples Center.
The Ducks, who got little going in the first two periods, managed to force overtime late in the game, only to end up on the wrong side of a lengthy shootout. The Kings’ Justin Williams sent a wrist shot past Jonas Hiller
in the seventh round of the tiebreaker, and LA clinched the victory when Jonathan Quick made a stop on a Kurtis Foster
wrister at the other end.
The only other conversions in the shootout came when Jarett Stoll sent a shot past Hiller to lead off the third round, and Ryan Getzlaf
answered with a deke move to the forehand. The Ducks fell to 1-3 in shootout this season and 6-8-4 overall.
"We didn’t really get our game going until the last half of the hockey game and then we played the type of hockey that’s going to be required," Carlyle said. "Our goaltender was called upon to make some big stops for us tonight, and that’s what’s required on the road."
Hiller kept the Ducks in the game with 36 saves, and the Ducks finally gave him some support with 3:25 left in regulation on the power play following a Williams trip on Cam Fowler
. Just 10 seconds into that man advantage, Teemu Selanne
fired a shot from the left wing circle that appeared to tick off the shin of a screening Corey Perry
and sneak past Quick. The goal was credited to Selanne, however.
The Ducks appeared to tie the score earlier in the third period, when a Selanne shot from the right wing kicked off Quick and was knocked in with the left glove by Getzlaf. It was ruled no goal on the ice and replays confirmed that Getzlaf missed touching the puck with his stick by inches.
"It's tough to lose a point in that kind of fashion, but I thought the boys played a hard game," Bobby Ryan
said. "We had so many chances and Quick was standing on his head, really sucking pucks in and not letting any rebounds or chances for us."
The Kings took their 1-0 lead through two periods that could have been much worse, as the Ducks were outshot 29-12 and leaned heavily on Hiller. LA finally cashed in on one of its six power plays in the opening 40 minutes, on a second period two-man advantage resulting from Andrew Gordon
and Maxime Macenauer
tripping penalties. At 7:38 into the period, a Jack Johnson shot went wide of the net off the end boards, bouncing to a wide open Mike Richards, who slapped it into the open left half of the cage.
That was the only damage done on Hiller before the shootout, who was quick to give credit to the men in front of him. "We found a way to get back into the game and I thought we played well in the third," Hiller said. "I thought I was pretty sharp tonight and saw the puck pretty well. At the same time, I think we did a better job in front of our net to take sticks away and didn't give them second and third chances. In the end it's six players working together in your own zone and I think we did a pretty good job tonight."
The Ducks and Kings will do it all over again tomorrow night, this time at Honda Center in the second game of the Freeway Face-Off rivalry series.
"We got the point and we worked hard for it," Carlyle said. "It’s one shot away in the shootout from being a difference maker. Right now things aren’t going our way, but if we work as hard as we did in the last half of this hockey game, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel "

1:20 - Kopitar cuts into the slot and forehands one into Hiller's belly.
0:00 - Here we go.
20:00 - END OF REGULATION - And we're going to overtime.
16:35 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - TEEMU SELANNE - Ducks take quick advantage of the power play, as a Selanne shot from the left wing circle looks like it hits off the shin of a screening Perry and sneaks past Quick. They announce Selanne on the goal, but replays seem to show Perry got a piece of it. Either way, we're tied 1-1 as the Ducks finally break through.
16:25 - LAK Penalty - Justin Williams, 2 min. tripping. Williams takes down Fowler from behind, sending him sliding into the wall, right shoulder first. He's flow to get up, but he looks okay.
14:40 - Ryan fires just wide of the far side from right wing. He's back on the top line.
13:53 - Timeout with 6:07 left, and the Ducks still looking for the equalizer.
9:10 - Ducks look to have another chance with the puck bouncing around and Quick down on the ice, but Macenauer chips over the net.
6:50 - Ryan playing with McMillan and Smith-Pelly right now.
6:45 - Loktionov shot nicks Hiller and goes just wide.
5:25 - On the run, Selanne rips a slap shot from right wing that hits off Quick and drops in front of him, where Ryan Getzlaf
knocks it down and into the net with his left glove. The goal is waved off on the ice, and replays show he was inches away from hitting it with his stick, upholding the ruling. Ducks can't catch a break when they finally appear to score and it remains 1-0.
3:55 - Perry and Selanne chop away at the puck a half dozen times, but can't get it behind Quick.
3:33 - LAK Penalty - Jack Johnson, 2 min. cross checking. Johnson gets McMillan in the back in front of the LA net. Time for the Ducks to get something going.
4:15 - Ducks get close when a puck comes off the boards into the crease, but it's knocked away.
0:21 - Ducks kill, thanks in part to Macenauer pushing the puck into the Kings end on the opening draw.
0:00 - Puck drops for the third, Kings with 21 seconds of power play time on their side.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Kings finally get on the board thanks to Richards and it's 1-0 through two periods. LA will have 21 seconds of power play time to start the third.
19:59 - Smith-Pelly sends it down the ice just as the period is ending.
18:21 - ANA Penalty - Luca Sbisa
, 2 min. hooking. Back to the box.
17:05 - Brown somehow misses the net wide open on the doorstep on the rush. Not sure how that happened.
15:00 - Ducks don't get much going in those two minutes.
14:05 - Selanne tries to feed in front to Perry, but it slides by his stick.
13:00 - LAK Penalty - Anze Kopitar, 2 min. holding. Kopitar grabs onto Beleskey near the wall. Opportunity for the Ducks to generate some offense.
Some serious making out on the Kiss Cam tonight. What's in the water here in LA?
9:25 - Hiller with the stop chest-high seconds after the Ducks kill off the power play.
7:38 - LOS ANGELES GOAL (POWER PLAY) - MIKE RICHARDS - Kings cash in on the two-man advantage, as a Johnson shot goes wide and off the end boards to an open Richards, who slaps it into the open left half of the net. It's 1-0 with the Kings still on the PP.
6:55 - ANA Penalty - Maxime Macenauer
, 2 min. tripping. Macenauer hits Doughty in the ankle and he goes down hard. Macenauer not happy about it at all.
6:38 - ANA Penalty - Andrew Gordon
, 2 min. tripping. Ducks take another one.
5:45 - 8 is credited with the Ducks' eighth shot of the game, flipping the puck on net and having it deflected into Quick.
5:24 - Hiller reacts late, but makes the stop on Stoll.
4:40 - Ducks escape yet again.
4:20 - Three straight slap shots for the Kings, all blocked in front before the puck is cleared.
2:40 - ANA Penalty - Toni Lydman
, 2 min. hooking. Lydman has trouble catching up with Williams on the rush and commits the hook. Ref nearly blows our ears out announcing it, as his mic level way turned up WAY too high.
2:28 - Ryan tries a rare slap shot through some traffic, but Quick is there.
0:00 - Here we go in the second, the Ducks with some PP time.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks escape from a tough first period (outshot 17-5) with a scoreless tie. They'll have 1:26 of power play time when we come back.
19:25 - LAK Penalty - Jack Johnson, 2 min. holding. A nifty little toe drag move by Ryan draws the penalty, not far from where he had the incredible spin-o-rama for the hat trick a couple years ago here.
17:10 - Hiller chests away a Kopitar slap shot. Kings firing at will.
A fan in a Kings t-shirt plays a game during a timeout where he's given a playing card on the video board and has to guess whether the next card will be higher or lower. He's WAY too into it, but gets it right all three times. Not sure what prizes he wins aside from a Wetzel's Pretzel, but he's absolutely thrilled.
15:30 - Ducks being out shot 14-3, thanks in part to those two power plays.
13:54 - Ducks kill it by the skin of their teeth.
13:35 - Ducks dodge a major bullet as Brown tries to punch in a rebound and it appears to hit the bottom of the crossbar. Wow.
11:54 - ANA Penalty - Ryan Getzlaf
, 2 min. delay of game. Getz sends it over the glass.
An honored Marine makes his gal stand up with him to acknowledge the applauding crowd and plants a little kiss on her. Nice touch.
9:00 - Beauchemin steps in front to deny Gagne on what looked like a sure goal.
8:50 - ANA Penalty - JF Jacques, 2 min. tripping. Jacques, in his first game with the Ducks, takes down Clifford with the stick.
8:21 - Ducks get on a little rush, and a nice pass from Cogliano to Selanne gets knocked away by a backchecking Brown at the last second. He saved a certain goal.
6:50 - HIller with a great point blank stop on Williams.
Video board shows a girl in a Kings jersey that looked a lot like my girlfriend. Can't tell you how much that freaked me out.
5:10 - A DSP shot is deflected over the netting and deep into the crowd. Always makes me nervous.
3:44 - Hiller claps the pads together to take in a Johnson shot from the point.
And the organist-prompted "Ducks suck" chant starts early. Some things in life you can count on.
1:22 - Foster gives quick a little trouble with a shot from the left wing. A charging Cogliano almost pried it loose in the crease.
0:00 - And we're underway at Staples Center, the first half of a Freeway Face-Off back-to-back. This should be fun.
7:38 p.m. - Moi Navarro, who is apparently on the NBC show The Sing-Off, sings the anthem. Aside from him saying "by the dawn's early lights" and taking an hour and a half to wail through the second half of the song, not too bad.
Hiller gets the nod in net tonight. We'll see if it's Ellis tomorrow at home. Quick for the Kings. Jacques to play his first regular season game with the Ducks after serving that five-game suspension and going back and forth between Syracuse and here.
Starters in bold/italics.
