Ducks Tie It, Then Give Up Two Late to Fall to Kings, 5-3

ANAHEIM – A fast and furious third period that exemplified the tension-filled excitement of this Freeway Face-Off rivalry ultimately went against the Ducks, who suffered a 5-3 loss to the rival Kings at Honda Center.
Anaheim managed to wipe out a two-goal lead in the thrilling third, only to give up two late ones to Los Angeles, including an empty-netter from Mike Richards that sealed the Ducks' fate.
"I felt good that we were back in the hockey game," said Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf
. "We battled back as hard as we could and got the big goals when we needed them. Unfortunately, we gave up one at the end that ended up costing us."
Trailing 3-1 near the halfway point of the third period, the Ducks started their surge when Corey Perry
scored on the power play at 8:24. Perry’s poke at a rebound sent the puck off goalie Jonathan Quick and into the air, where it caromed off Perry and got behind Quick. A replay review confirmed the good goal.
Energized by that goal, the Ducks ultimately tied it with 6:25 left in the game, when a Luca Sbisa
slap shot was tipped in by Andrew Cogliano
with his back to the net, Cogliano's second of the game
Anaheim, behind a raucous home crowd, continued to fly around the rink trying to go ahead, but were dealt a stomach punch when Anze Kopitar stayed with a loose puck in the slot and punched it through.
The Ducks nearly tied it when a Saku Koivu
pass in front to Cogliano nearly got him his third goal of the game, instead drawing a hook from behind on Kings defenseman Jack Johnson. The Ducks gambled by pulling goalie Dan Ellis
to create a 6-on-4, and the Kings quickly made them pay. A Cam Fowler
pass at the point was deflected by Kopitar to Richards, who sent it straight into the empty net from behind his own blue line, his second goal of the game.
"That is the most frustrating part is we tied the game late," said Cogliano. "With three minutes left, we could either try to win the game or go into overtime and get a point. We let that slip away late and gave them the two points."
The third period started 17 minutes later than it was supposed to, when a malfunctioning light unit delayed the drop of the puck. Los Angeles took its first two-goal lead not long after, when a pretty cross-ice backhand pass by Simon Gagne set up Slava Voynov for the goal.
"It’s always tough playing from behind and we played from behind most of the night," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "We got fired up in the game in the third period. We started to play with that emotion and got skating. It seems we have to get hit over the head to get to that point."
Following a scoreless first, the Kings struck quickly in the middle session. Just 54 seconds in, Richards got on a breakaway and backhanded a shot past Ellis on the near side.
Less than three minutes later, the Ducks tied it when a Teemu Selanne
spin-and-shoot try clicked off Koivu’s blade in front of the net, where Cogliano sent it past a drawn-out Quick.
LA turned the tables on the Ducks during an Anaheim power play later in the period, as a Corey Perry
pass back to the point skipped by Cam Fowler
, sending Gagne on a breakaway. Gagne got Ellis to miss on a poke check before sending in the shorthanded goal.
The Ducks, who fell 2-1 in a shootout the night before to the Kings at Staples Center, dropped their ninth game in the last 10. They face another bitter rival this Sunday, when they take on Detroit back here at Honda Center.
"We have to move on," Cogliani said. "We play Detroit on Sunday. You can’t hang your head."
"We showed a lot of good things tonight," Getzlaf said. "We have to continue to build on those things. I’m confident in this group. If we keep working the way we are, we’ll turn things around."
20:00 - END OF GAME - Ducks lose another tough one, 5-3.
19:00 - Ducks net still empty.
18:22 - LOS ANGELES GOAL (EMPTY NET) - MIKE RICHARDS - A D to D pass by the Ducks is tipped away to Richards, who sends it right into the empty net from his own blue line. That hurt and it's 5-3.
18:10 - Ellis to the bench.
18:04 - Ducks take timeout with 1:56 left, and 1:27 left on the power play.
18:04 - Selanne robbed again point blank by Quick, again on the backhand from right of the net.
17:30 - LAK Penalty - Jack Johnson, 2 min. hooking - Cogliano just misses getting the hat trick, as he's right on the doorstep off a great Koivu feed before he's sent spilling to the ice by Johnson, the puck going wide of the net.
16:59 - LOS ANGELES GOAL - ANZE KOPITAR - Heartbreaker for the Ducks, as Kopitar's wraparound try is initially denied by the boot of Sbisa, but the puck stays in the crease, where Kopitar is able to reach out and send it through in a crowd of both black and white jerseys. Kings lead it 4-3 with 3:01 left.
16:25 - Ducks with a ton of energy since that goal.
14:45 - Selanne speeds to pick up a puck along the wall and gets in deep before Quick saves his backhand try. Close.
13:35 - ANAHEIM GOAL - ANDREW COGLIANO - After scuffling with the puck a bit, the Ducks finally get control long enough for Sbisa to fake, then fire a slapshot that Cogliano tips past Quick with his back to the net. We're tied 3-3 and this crowd just got very loud. Second of the game for Cogliano.
12:00 - Ducks really struggling with puck possession the last two minutes.
8:40 - Ducks nearly catch Quick behind the net as he chases a puck.
8:24 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - COREY PERRY - On the power play, Getzlaf throws a shot on net from above the right wing circle through a screening Perry. The puck hits Quick and is poked at by Perry, popping up in the air before hitting off Perry's body and getting under a falling Quick. It's ruled a goal on the ice, and after replay review ... it's ruled ... A GOAL. And it's a big one for the Ducks, who make it 3-2 with 11:36 left.
6:29 - LAK Penalty - Ethan Moreau, 2 min. holding. Ducks get bailed out when Moreau gets tied up with Sbisa in the corner and drags him down. We're 4 on 4 now as the Ducks escape that lengthy power play.
3:28 - ANA Penalty - Toni Lydman
, 2 min. interference and 2 min. unsportsmanlike conduct. Lydman runs into Lewis and doesn't care for the call.
2:45 - LOS ANGELES GOAL (POWER PLAY) - SLAVA VOYNOV - Gagne picks up the puck in the right wing circle and flings a backhand across the low slot, where Vovynov beats Brookbank and Ellis with a shot inside the right post. It's 3-1 Kings.
0:49 - ANA Penalty - Toni Lydman
, 2 min. hooking. Lydman takes down Lewis in the corner.
0:00 - After about a 15-minute delay, we're off and running in the third.
We've got a delay starting the third while they fix a lighting issue in the arena. Kind of dark on the ice right now.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks give up an early one to Richards and a shorthanded one to Gagne and in between get one from Cogliano. It's 2-1 Kings through 2.
18:45 - Fowler already back out there.
17:40 - Fowler hit in the head with a shot, bringing a gasp and then silence from this crowd. It looks like it's the side of the head, and he skates off to the bench shaking the cobwebs out.
15:48 - Richards throws the puck out of the rink from behind his own net, but officials rule it was deflected over the glass. Replays show otherwise.
15:35 - Sbisa tears into a one-timer on a shorthanded rush that Quick just does get a piece of. Close.
15:10 - Kings and Ducks with 23 shots apiece. (I guess you can see that above.)
13:36 - ANA Penalty - Saku Koivu
, 2 min. hooking. Koivu hooks Kopitar behind the Ducks net. That's a lot of Os and Ks in that sentence.
13:05 - Ellis with a good stop on Gagne on the rush.
11:20 - McMillan with a hard shoulder check that sends Clifford flying into the wall. Crowd loves it. I imagine Brookbank does too.
10:45 - Gordon picks up a loose puck, spins, fires and just barely misses the net. He's got to get one soon.
8:46 - Fowler moves in for the one-kneed one-timer that Quick saves.
7:28 - LOS ANGELES GOAL (SHORTHANDED) - SIMON GAGNE - Perry's pass back to the point gets past Fowler, and Gagne breaks away, getting Ellis to miss on the poke check and sending it through for the shorty. It's 2-1 Kings.
6:00 - Richards nearly gets something going shorthanded. He's speedy.
6:38 - LAK Penalty - Slava Voynov, 2 min. hooking. Voynov hounds Selanne behind the Kings net.
6:09 - Doughty rips a slap shot that Ellis takes in from above the crease.
4:52 - McMillan pokes away at a loose puck and Quick doesn't like it, delivering a couple of shots with the glove before McMillan is grabbed and held by Stoll. No penalties.
3:19 - ANAHEIM GOAL - ANDREW COGLIANO - Cogliano gets the goal, but it was Selanne who masde it happen, emerging from behind the net and turning on Doughty to fire a shot. It hits off the blade of a falling Koivu perfectly to Cogliano, who dumps it into the open net. Crowd erupts and we're tied 1-1.
1:46 - Brookank and Clifford tangle near the Anaheim bench after several shoves by Brookbank, and they start throwing punches. It's a lot of clutching and grabbing with a few shots to the back of the head by Brookbank before it's broken up. Those two went at it hard during a fight last year at Staples Center that involved Teemu Selanne
, if you recall.
0:54 - LOS ANGELES GOAL - MIKE RICHARDS - Foster falls down trying to put a puck on net, leaving him late to get back when the Kings sprint the other way. Richards is in front of him when he gets the puck near the right wing circle and backhands a shot that beats Ellis on the near side. Not a pretty goal, but it's 1-0 Kings.
0:00 - Here we go in the second.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Ducks with good energy in the first and a few scoring chances, but we're locked at a bagel apiece.
19:47 - Nice no-look from the wall by Koivu springs Cogliano, who cuts into the slot, but fires into Quick's chest.
18:40 - Hagman very active in his first minutes as a Duck.
15:17 - Within seconds of each other, there are scrambles for loose pucks in front of both nets. Nothing gets through.
13:58 - Ellis makes a stop that was harder than it looked because Kopitar was hounding him.
Kiss Cam ends by showing two dudes in Kings jerseys. They're not up for it.
10:30 - Hagman out there with Smith-Pelly and McMillan.
8:15 - Perry cuts across the middle of the ice and delivers a nice feed to Ryan, who's robbed by a sliding over Quick. Ryan can't buy one these days.
6:10 - Fowler straight up takes the puck away from Richards, then breaks Richards' ankles going around him to skate up ice. Looked a little like his old landlord.
5:06 - Ellis with a big stop to rob Loktionov on a one-timer on the rush. Loktionov didn't make great contact with it though.
3:42 - A pinching Foster tries to tap in a rebound, but Quick is there. He's been tested early.
2:51 - LAK Penalty - Jonathan Quick, 2 min. tripping. During a scramble for a loose puck to the right of the net, Quick grabs on to Macenauer's leg with both hands and takes him down.
2:10 - Nice little feed from behind the net by Hagman to Smith-Pelly, who whiffs on the one-timer.
1:39 - Ellis nicely knocks down a shot from Richards, who emerged from behind the net unchecked.
0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center in Game 2 of the Freeway Face-Off.
7:08 p.m. - Another nice anthem by Dawn Wright.
As expected, Quick back in there for the Kings and Ellis for the Ducks. Hagman got his work visa and makes his Ducks debut.
Starters in bold/italics.
