ANAHEIM – The first game of the Bruce Boudreau era in Anaheim got off to a promising start and ended in disappointing fashion, as the Ducks fell 4-3 in overtime to the Flyers at Honda Center.
In Boudreau's first game after being hired Wednesday to replace Randy Carlyle, he watch Philadelphia chip away at a 3-0 Ducks lead, getting the tying goal from Scott Hartnell with 3:02 left in regulation.
In overtime, Ryan Getzlaf
took a tripping penalty and earned an additional two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct for vehemently arguing the call. The Flyers made the Ducks pay for that, taking advantage of a fatigued penalty kill unit of Saku Koivu
, Francois Beauchemin
and Toni Lydman
as Claude Giroux one-timed a shot from the left wing circle top shelf.
"It’s frustrating," Getzlaf said. "It’s an emotional game out there. It definitely won’t happen again, that kind of stuff at the end of a game. It hurt our group tonight. I’ll take that on me and we’ll go forward from here."
Philadelphia’s overtime-forcing goal came after Kimmo Timonen recovered the puck behind the Anaheim net and fed in front to Hartnell for the punch-in from near the right post. Anaheim had a chance to go back ahead at the end of regulation when Jakub Voracek took a hooking penalty with 1:38 left. But the Ducks didn’t threaten during that power play either in regulation or the opening seconds of overtime, and Getzlaf’s costly penalties came soon afterward.
Those penalties were the 10th and 11th in the game for the Ducks, whose sixth-ranked penalty kill unit gave up three goals.
"You’re not going to beat that club if you take minors," Bourdreau said. "I played against them too many times. They have too much skill and are the highest scoring team in the league for a reason. It was one of the things I was a little worried about. We had 111 minors coming in. If you look at the teams that are successful, it’s not the teams that are the most penalized teams. It’s the teams that are the least penalized teams."
The Ducks got off to a solid start in the game, getting goals from Andrew Cogliano
and Teemu Selanne
in a span of 2:22 in the first period.
"We did a lot of good things out there," Selanne said. "The bottom line tonight is way too many penalties. There were a lot of penalties that we don’t have to take. We have to be smarter."
Cogliano opened the scoring on a Ducks power play when he chased down a loose puck as it rolled toward the Philadelphia net, sweeping it under Ilya Bryzgalov with just his right hand on the stick.
Then in the middle of the period, Matt Beleskey
chased down the puck behind the Flyers net and sent it back to Koivu, who snuck it across the crease to Selanne for the tap-in. It was Beleskey’s first point in 20 games, as he debuted on the second line.
Anaheim made it 3-0 on Andrew Gordon
’s long-awaited first goal in a Ducks uniform at 6:31 of the second. A Ben Maxwell
shot from the right wing on the rush kicked hard in front of Bryzgalov, and Gordon was there to tip it inside the right post. With Gordon elated on the Ducks bench, a quick replay review to determine if he kicked the puck in proved otherwise. It was Gordon’s second NHL goal, his first coming Dec, 21, 2010 vs. New Jersey while playing for Boudreau with Washington.
Philly creeped back with 4:42 left in the second, on the power play, when Timonen took a shot from the point, and Jaromir Jagr deflected it under Jonas Hiller
off his lifted leg. It was the first power play goal given up by the Ducks in the last 12 opportunities.
Jagr got his second of the night on the power play 4:46 into the third, hammering a one-timer from the right wing circle to pull within a goal, setting the table for Hartnell’s tying strike and Giroux’s OT winner.
"I think he did a really good job," Selanne said of Boudreau. "He must be frustrated too about the penalties. He knew that this team has a penalty problem. He said after the game that everybody is trying so hard and giving everything we have. We got the point, but nobody is very happy about that point. We needed two."
Said Boudreau, "There are a lot of positives. First of all, there is more skill up front than I thought there was. The energy and enthusiasm on the bench was really good. Everybody left everything they had on the ice. It wasn’t a question of people not giving it their all. They tried hard. But in the end, you can’t overcome making dumb mistakes."
3:29 - PHILADELPHIA GOAL (POWER PLAY) - CLAUDE GIROUX - The Ducks penalty killers are gasses, as Philly works the puck around before Giroux rips a one-timer from the left wing circle that beats Hiller stop shelf. Getzlaf's penalties come back to bite the Ducks, who lose 3-0.
2:05 - Hiller makes a few big stops and smothers the puck to avoid danger. Philly takes timeout.
0:41 - ANA Penalty - Ryan Getzlaf
, 2 min. tripping and 2 min. unsportsmanlike conduct. Ducks don't convert on the power play, and Getzlaf takes down Voracek, then gets two more for arguing the call.

20:00 - END OF REGULATION - Ducks don't threaten much on that power play, but will have 24 more seconds and clean ice in OT.
19:10 - Ducks having trouble getting set up and a Timonen dump-in almost takes a weird hop past Hiller.
18:22 - PHI Penalty - Jakub Voracek, 2 min. hooking. Voracek gets the stick into Smith-Pelly as he heads down the left wing. Big opportunity for Anaheim.
16:58 - PHILADELPHIA GOAL - SCOTT HARTNELL - Timonen recovers the puck behind the net and feeds in front to Hartnell, who knocks it through from near the right post. We're tied 3-3.
16:28 - Timeout Ducks with 3:32 left.
16:28 - Ducks being outshot 11-4 in the period.
14:30 - A collision sends Simmonds down in a heap, but he's okay. Thankfully, no penalty.
13:45 - Philly makes a great transition off a Ducks turnover, and Hiller denies Jagr on the hat trick try.
11:00 - Ducks still spending way too much time in their own end.
10:45 - Hiller gets the leg out in heavy traffic to make a great save on Timonen.
10:05 - Hiller gloves and holds a Philly shot, as we take a timeout with 9:55 left and the Ducks up a goal.
8:30 - Cogliano takes a stick to the face from Timonen, no call.
5:45 - Ducks have a shorthanded 2-on-1 opportunity, but Perry's pass is too far ahead of Macenauer.
4:46 - PHILADELPHIA GOAL (POWER PLAY) - JAROMIR JAGR - The Flyers cycle the puck for awhile until Jags takes a pass in the right circle from Timonen and one-times it home. Worse yet, it comes with time left on the first penalty, so Philly remains on the power play.
3:55 - ANA Penalty - Devante Smith-Pelly
, 2 min. high sticking. On the follow through swing after slapping the puck out of the zone, DSP gets Hartnell in the face. Tough break, as the Ducks go down two men.
2:51 - ANA Penalty - Ryan Getzlaf
, 2 min. tripping. Getzlaf takes down Giroux heading into the Anaheim zone.
0:49 - No shots for the Ducks on that PP.
0:00 - Ducks on the PP to start the third.

19:50 - Perry nicely dives to break up a shorthanded charge to the net by Talbot.
18:49 - PHI Penalty - Jaromir Jagr, 2 min. hooking. Jagr hooks Beauchemin chasing the puck to the wall. He doesn't like the call, but not sure why.
18:45 - Hiller appears to have the puck underneath him and frozen, but the Flyers jam away and knock it loose. Thankfully, Beauchemin takes it out of trouble.
17:25 - ANA Penalty - Saku Koivu
, 2 min., high sticking. Koivu gives Zolnierczyk a shot after dumping the puck and gets the stick blade up.
15:18 - PHILADELPHIA GOAL (POWER PLAY) - JAROMIR JAGR - Philly finally makes the Ducks pay on the power play, as Timonen takes a shot from the point and, with his back to the net, Jagr lifts a leg and gets a piece of it, deflecting it under Hiller. It's 3-1 on Jagr's seventh of the year.
14:21 - ANA Penalty - Francois Beauchemin
, 2 min. cross checking. Beauchemin gives a little bit to Hartnell and he doesn't like it. Meanwhile, Beauchemin doesn't like that he doesn't like it.
13:59 - Ducks buzz around the Philly net before Sbisa slaps a shot into Bryz's glove. Timeout.
12:35 - Fowler does a good job to break up a 2-on-1, knocking the puck away from Simmonds, the former King.
Check out what Andrew Gordon did when he scored his first career goal back in December 2010 (end of this video).
6:31 - ANAHEIM GOAL - ANDREW GORDON - On the rush, Maxwell fires a shot from left wing that kicks hard off Bryzgalov in front, where Gordon just gets his stick on it to chip it inside the right post. Gordon is elated on the bench, as a quick video review to see if he kicked it determines that the call on the ice stands. Good goal, Gordon's long-awaited first as a Duck. Got to admit, I couldn't be happier for the kid, one of the nicest we've got. First goal since Dec. 21, 2010 with Washington, while playing for ... Bruce Boudreau. It's 3-0 Ducks.
4:30 - Another Beauchemin rocket is blockered away by Bryz. He saw more than a few of those in practice way back when.
3:00 - Beauchemin one-timer hits Bryz and skids just wide.
1:57 - Ducks kill again.
0:00 - Ducks start the second on the penalty kill.
20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Aside from the penalties, good period for the Ducks, who get goals from Cogliano and Selanne to take a 2-0 lead.
17:57 - ANA Penalty - Saku Koivu
, 2 min. interference. Selanne and Koivu get on a 2-on-1 and with the puck on Selanne's stick, Koivu knocks down Coburn from behind with the stick. Just 2.8 seconds left, so this is carrying over to the second.
17:35 - ANA Penalty - Matt Beleskey
, 2 min. boarding and 2 min. roughing and PHI Penalties - Harry Zolnierczyk and Andrej Meszaros, 2 min. roughing. Beleskey sends Couturier into the wall, spaking a mini melee that Meszaros and Zolnierczyk get involved in, along with Beauchemin.
16:50 - Beauchemin drills Rinaldo near center ice. Big reaction from the crowd.
16:27 - Ducks kill the second power play, giving up just one shot. They snuffed out all seven last game vs. Montreal.
14:27 - ANA Penalty - Nate Guenin
, 2 min. cross checking. Guenin knocks down Briere behind the Anaheim net.
12:20 - Selanne gets robbed of a second one as his shot on the rush is grabbed out of the air by Bryz.
12:00 - Ducks only have four on the ice for a good 10 seconds, but get away with it. New coach and all.
10:34 - ANAHEIM GOAL - TEEMU SELANNE - The two Finns hook up as Beleskey chases the puck down behind the net and sends it back to Koivu near the right post. He quickly sneaks it across the crease to Selanne for the tap-in. It's 2-0 Ducks on Selanne's ninth of the year. First point in 20 games with Beleskey.
8:12 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - ANDREW COGLIANO - Cogliano's speed makes this happen, as a Koivu stretch pass gets away from Smith-Pelly, but Cogliano chases it down and sweeps it under Bryzgalov with only the right hand on the stick. Ducks strike first, 1-0.
6:50 - Bobby Ryan
on that first PP unit under the new coach, one of three forwards with 8, 10 and 15. 4 is the D.
6:41 - Hiller makes a glove snatch from his rear to save the Ducks from a shorthanded Meszaros goal.
A 50-something man doing what could or could not be The Robot wins some sort of dance competition during the timeout.
6:26 - PHI Penalty - Kimmo Timonen, 2 min. holding. Getzlaf draws one in front of the net as Timonen pulls him down.
5:35 - Beauchemin checks Simmonds into the glass and it comes out of the stanchion. Quick fix though.
4:10 - Selanne with a beautiful shot to the far post that Bryz barely gets a stick on.
3:10 - Perry falls and throws a desperation shot on net that Bryz just does kick away.
2:30 - Ducks giving Flyers trouble as they try to enter the zone.

0:30 - The Boudreau influence shows itself right away, as Ryan crosses the blue line and fires immediately, into the glove of Bryz.
0:00 - And the Bruce Boudreau era is officially underway.
It's Hiller vs. Bryz in net tonight.
