ANAHEIM – Teemu Selanne narrowly missed a chance at overtime glory, and seconds later the Ducks suffered a loss they could ill afford.

Shortly after Selanne missed high with an open one-timer that would have given him a dramatic hat trick, Columbus center Derick Brassard stole the puck from Cam Fowler, raced down the left wing and ripped a slap shot past Jonas Hiller on the near side. That gave the last-place Blue Jackets a 3-2 overtime win that was their first victory in the last seven games. Anaheim suffered a second straight loss that followed a 9-1-1 run.

The Ducks earned a point, but desperately needed two in their hopes for an improbable push for playoff contention.

"It’s a little frustrating," Selanne said. "We just couldn’t do it. I don’t think we played that well. That is what bothers me most."

The 20-year-old Fowler took responsibility afterward for the deciding goal, saying, "I was trying to get in and create some offense down low. Saku made a good play to get it to me. I thought I had a little bit more time than I did. The guy made a good play, a burst of speed and got ahead of me.

"It’s up to me to know my surroundings. I just have to make a better play. There is one minute left in the game. It was just too high risk. It was a mistake on my part."

Anaheim briefly held a one-goal lead in the third before Jeff Carter struck early in the period on the power play to tie it 2-2, where it remained until Brassard's clincher.

The Ducks opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game when a Lubomir Visnovsky one-timer got under goalie Curtis Sanford and trickled into the crease, where Selanne dove to knock it through.

The Ducks failed to add to the lead in the second despite three power play opportunities, and instead gave up the tying goal to Brassard at 14:47. A rebound in front of Hiller was lost off the stick of Rick Nash to Brassard, who fired it through.

Anaheim finally cashed in on a fourth power play opportunity, following a too many men on the ice minor for Columbus. Corey Perry sent the puck from behind the net to Selanne, who one-timed it home from the bottom of the left wing circle.

A fifth power play carried into the third, and the Ducks did not convert, but Columbus did early in the period. Following a Sheldon Brookbank cross checking minor, Antoine Vermette picked up a loose puck and drew out Hiller, then backhanded across to Carter, who flipped it into the open net.

"Giving up a lead at any point is aggravating," Boudreau said. "It’s not like we gave up a four-goal lead. It was a one-goal lead and one shot. But at this stage of the game, every little thing like that gets magnified and it’s upsetting."

The Ducks had a few opportunities to regain the lead, the most glaring a Perry shot on the rush that loudly rang the crossbar with about six minutes left in regulation.

"We both had chances in overtime and during the course of the game," Boudreau said. "I thought it was a sloppy game. We make a dumb mistake at the end, get outmuscled and it cost us."

The Ducks will look to get back on track when they take on Calgary on Monday night at Honda Center.

"We just have to focus on the next one and learn something from this," Selanne said. "We can’t keep giving these points away like this."

GAME LOG

Overtime

3:55 - COLUMBUS GOAL - DERICK BRASSARD - Fowler gets the puck taken from him by Brassard, who has no one come to him as he sprints down left wing and fires a slap shot that beats Hiller near side. It's a 3-2 win for Columbus.

2:45 - Koivu with a steal and a pass to an open Selanne, who one-times way over the net.

2:33 - Ducks with a number of close calls, the last when Ryan drops to Fowler on the rush, who is stopped on a nice save by Sanford.

1:55 - Hiller with a huge stop.

1:46 - Cogliano picks up a loose puck and fires off Sanford's shoulder.

0:00 - Here we go.

3rd Period

20:00 - END OF REGULATION - Ducks threaten in the closing moments, but don't score. They get a point. They need two.

17:20 - Selanne off Sanford's chest and Hagman just misses putting in the rebound.

15:10 - Ducks' luck right now: Selanne looks to make a pass in the Columbus end and his stick breaks in half.

14:05 - Ryan drops on the rush to Perry, who loudly rings the crossbar with a wrist shot. Wow.

12:55 - Bonino with a wraparound try, but it's off Sanford's skate. Close.

12:23 - Ducks outshooting CBJ, 30-18.

12:23 - Brookbank with a bad turnover, but a blocked shot to bail himself out.

11:41 - Crowd comes alive every time Selanne touches it.

8:52 - Tough break as Getzlaf gets called for intentional offside on a stretch pass and the draw comes in the Anaheim end.

7:36 - ANA Penalty - Teemu Selanne, 2 min. high sticking. MacKenzie initiates the contact with Selanne, who knocks his helmet off with the stick shaft on the hit.

Some bizarre screaming from some woman going on in hte area of section 211. Not sure what that is.

2:05 - COLUMBUS GOAL (POWER PLAY) - JEFF CARTER - Vermette picks up a deflected pass moving to his right in front of the Anaheim net. He draws out Hiller before backhanding it across to Carter, who flips it into the wide open net. It's 2-2.

1:11 - ANA Penalty - Sheldon Brookbank, 2 min. cross checking. Brookbank gives Brasard the business in front of the net.

0:00 - Ducks on the PP as we start the third.

2nd Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - The Jackets tie it, but Selanne strikes again to make it 2-1 Ducks. Anaheim has 26 seconds of power play time in the third.

19:53 - Selanne goes for a third with a one-timer that Sanford stops. There's a scramble for a loose puck in the crease, but it's buried with 6.4 left.

18:26 - CBJ Penalty - Fedor Tyutin, 2 min. delay of game. Tyutin sends it over the glass and there isn't a call right away. Ducks are calling for the penalty and they get it.

16:52 - ANAHEIM GOAL (POWER PLAY) - TEEMU SELANNE - Selanne gets his second of the net and the Ducks finally cash in on the power play when Perry passes from behind the net to Selanne, who one-times it home. It's 2-1 Ducks.

15:56 - CBJ Penalty - 2 min. too many men on the ice. The Ducks get a fourth power play in the period.

14:47 - COLUMBUS GOAL - DERICK BRASARD - Rebound pops in front of Hiller and Nash loses it off his stick, but Brasard picks it up and slings it through. It's 1-1.

13:00 - Cogliano looks a little shaken up as he goes down in the Anaheim end and heads to the bench.

12:55 - Pahlsson fires wide at the same net he scored into in Game 2 against Ottawa in '07.

12:30 - Pelley from the right wing robbed on a nice kick save by Sanford.

9:42 - Ducks let another power play go by.

7:42 - CBJ Penalty - Colton Gillies, 2 min. tripping. Gillies takes down Fowler in the corner and the Ducks get another shot at it.

5:45 - Selanne gives Blake a beautiful feed on the doorstep, but he can't bury it.

5:21 - CBJ Penalty - Vinny Prospal, 2 min. hooking. Ducks get another shot after that first power play came and went.

4:20 - Hiller makes a save with the pad on Methot to avoid the shorty.

2:29 - CBJ Penalty - Derek Dorsett, 2 min. unsportsmanlike conduct and 10 min. misconduct. Some pushing and shoving between Sbisa and Dorsett after the whistle gets a little out of hand.

1:45 - Selanne slaps it wide on the rush. Didn't make good contact. A shank, if this was golf.

0:00 - Jackets on the power play as we begin the second.

1st Period

20:00 - END OF PERIOD - Selanne punches in a rebound to give Anaheim a 1-0 lead through 1.

19:54 - Hiller dramatically snags a tipped puck with the glove.

19:25 - ANA Penalty - Luca Sbisa, 2 min. boarding. Now it's Sbisa sending Vermette's head into the wall.

18:02 - Third line of Blake, Bonino and Cogliano showing it right now.

13:10 - Ducks get barely denied on a 2 on 1.

12:55 - Carter, back from injury, whips a shot that ticks off the crossbar.

Love it when a couple is genuinely thrilled to be on Kiss Cam. Then you have the dude who sticks out his tongue as he kisses his girl.

10:10 - Getzlaf wins a battle with Nash for the puck near the Anaheim net. Two big dudes.

7:57 - ANA Penalty - Toni Lydman, 2 min. boarding. Lydman shoves Dorsett face first into the wall.

7:45 - Pahlsson tip in front goes thankfully wide.

Contest during the timeout where two dudes compete against each other singing a part of "Back in Black" by AC/DC. Can't say I was enjoying that. Both sounded like a cat having its tail run over by a bus. Somehow one gets booed over the other. Not sure how they decided he was the "bad one."

4:30 - Blake in there after missing a couple games with a foot prob.

2:59 - Parros nearly punches in a rebound. Big stop by Sanford.

1:46 - ANAHEIM GOAL - TEEMU SELANNE - Visnovsky's rocket from the right point gets under Sanford and sits in the crease, where he can't find it. Selanne dives ahead of Pahlsson to punch it in for his 17th of the season and 654th of his career. It's 1-0 early.

1:35 - Brookbank with a one-timer wide.

0:00 - And we're underway at Honda Center.
